Race 1: CELLARBRATIONS MAIDEN PLATE – 1660M

As apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester was to be overweight, apprentice C. Bayliss was substituted as the rider of CALISTO. Apprentice Guthmann-Chester was fined $200.

HERMITAGE – Began awkwardly.

SUCCEEDANDCONQUER – Began awkwardly. Held up from the 400m until approaching the 250m.

CALISTO – After being caught wide in a handy position in the early stages was restrained towards the rear of the field passing the 1300m in an attempt to obtain cover but was unable to find cover and raced three wide throughout.

HALF MOON BLUE – Began awkwardly and made contact with the barrier partition.

DEL VEGA – Began awkwardly.

LADY JEUNE – Upon straightening was bumped, became unbalanced and forced wider on the track by CONSTRUE, which shifted out to improve.

Race 2: THE LIGHTNING LINK MAIDEN PLATE – 1660M

The start of this race was delayed when WHAKAREWAREWA proved difficult to load.

C’MOME PADDYREILLY – Bumped by WHAKAREWAREWA on jumping and as a result was forced in, making contact with the hind quarters of PEBKAC. Attempted to improve three wide after passing the 800m but was forced wider on the track when KAZ BAR RUBY shifted out from an inside position to improve and forced PEBKAC out on to C’MONE PADDYREILLY.

I KNOW YVES – Bumped on jumping. After showing signs of being distressed following the event the gelding was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported that it was showing signs of tying up. The horse was treated by the veterinary surgeon prior to it leaving the course.

HE’S THE DEEL – Began awkwardly.

PEBKAC – Bumped on the hind quarters on jumping.

WHAKAREWAREWA – Began awkwardly and bumped C’MOME PADDYREILLY. Raced greenly in the early stages when racing outside the leader, overraced and refused to settle until crossed by GRATUITOUS passing the 1100m. When asked to explain the tactics adopted, jockey M. Du Plessis stated that he was advised by trainer B. Hill to ride the gelding where it was comfortable. He added that Mr Hill advised him that at the gelding’s first start it raced in a rearward position as per its previous trials. He said he expected the gelding to be in a rearward position, however, after being difficult to load and then beginning well he allowed the gelding to race more forward than anticipated. He further added that the gelding overraced and refused to settle in the early stages and after passing the 1100m commenced to settle and travelled well throughout the event and finished the race off reasonably well. He also added that the gelding has improved since its first run and he expects that it will improve further following today’s event. Trainer B. Hill confirmed the instructions given and was also of the opinion that the gelding would take benefit from today’s event.

GRATUITOUS – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare, jockey J. Byrne explained that it was his intention to race in a forward position as per the mare’s usual racing pattern, however, after being caught wide in the early stages and overracing it was unable to be restrained to take up a position behind WHAKAREWAREWA and HE’S THE DEEL, which were both racing to his inside, passing the 1400m. He added that after entering the back straight he allowed GRATUITOUS to slide forward to the position outside of HE’S THE DEEL and in doing so was hoping that the mare would settle better in that position, but after passing the 1200m the mare continued to overrace and therefore he elected to allow it to stride forward to obtain the lead on its own, clear of any other runners, in an attempt to get the mare to settle. He further added that after obtaining the lead passing the 1100m the mare did settle and travelled kindly, however, he was of the opinion that the mare overracing in the early stages may have had some bearing on it not being able to finish the race off as well as he would have liked.

MAXIMALIST – Raced in restricted room for a short distance rounding the home turn when attempting a run between WHAKAREWAREWA and PEBKAC.

SANTARENE – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.

BEYOND DESIRE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Inconvenienced approaching the 100m by BELLE’S PLUCK, which shifted out, and had to be shifted wider on the track. When asked to explain the performance of the filly, jockey R. Fradd stated that after being awkwardly away and settling in a rearward position the filly failed, despite his urgings, to tack on to the back of the field in the early and middle stages, however, upon straightening commenced to make ground and when shifted wider in the home straight finished the race off quite well and in his opinion would be better suited to races further than that of today’s event.

KEREMA MORI – Bumped on jumping.

Harrison, the rider of KING RAGNAR, was reprimanded and advised to take greater measures when her mounts shift ground under riding.

FLAME OF LIBERTY – Connections advised that the horse would be ridden in a midfield position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Raced three wide with cover throughout.
