Race 3: CASCADE BENCHMARK 80 H'CAP – 2200M

CAPITAL GAIN – Eased off the heels of ART ATTACK near the 1200m when racing keenly. When questioned regarding the run, apprentice A. Thompson said with his mount’s big weight, he elected not to go too early, however, in a slowly run race when runners improved after passing the 1000m he was shuffled back in the field and thereafter when placed under pressure making the turn into the straight, CAPITAL GAIN ran on fairly. He was further questioned as to why he did not attempt to follow ART ATTACK passing the 1000m and getting towards the 800m. He stated that he felt it was a better option to not bustle the horse to trail that runner as he was mindful of his instructions and with the big weight he felt it more advantageous to make ground to the inside in the home straight. Stewards advised apprentice Thomson that in hindsight it would have been a better option  to trail ART ATTACK into the race from the 1000m which would have resulted in CAPITAL GAIN being more favourably positioned and not having to make up so much ground in the home straight from a rearward position. Stewards did not feel that apprentice Thompson’s decision was so unreasonable as to be culpable under the rules and no direct action was taken.

TRAVISTEE – Bumped with ROMAKASH on jumping.

MASTER ZEPHYR – Raced keenly in the early stages. Bumped with PEACOCK on a couple of occasions near the 300m.

GOLD SYMPHONY – Apprentice J. Murphy was asked for an explanation regarding his riding of GOLD SYMPHONY, which led by a considerable distance in the middle stages. Apprentice Murphy explained that his instructions were to lead and allow the horse to stride along. He added that in hindsight he may have been better served to attempt to restrain the gelding more than he did in the middle stages. He added that soon after straightening GOLD SYMPHONY was not responding to his riding and weakened badly in the home straight. Trainer L. Abbott confirmed that she instructed apprentice Murphy to lead, however, was of the opinion that he may have let the horse stride along too much in the middle stages.

COUP – Approaching the 400m steadied off the heels of STAMPE, which shifted in.
