SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
As App S. Wiseman was unavailable due to transport difficulties, rider replacements were made as per Stewards Summary.
Race 1: Sugarland Tavern Class 4 H’cap – 850m
1st – Frostinoss 2nd – Don’t You Worry 3rd – Twogundan 4th – Sir Something
SIR SOMETHING (M. Cant) began awkwardly losing ground.
WE WILL ROCK (A. Coome) was slow to begin.
TWOGUNDAN (R. Hancock) and CANADIAN CHIEF (App C. Priest), both of which raced wide throughout, were taken wider at the 400m by NO BRAINER (App. K Yoneyama), which hung out on the turn despite the efforts of its rider. CANADIAN CHIEF had to be eased off TWOGUNDAN’s heels in this incident. Tr D. Gardiner was advised that a warning would be placed on NO BRAINER for hanging out. When placing the warning on the horse, stewards took into account that it was the gelding’s first start on a track racing in a clock-wise direction.
A Coome, the rider of WE WILL ROCK, which performed below market expectation, advised that the horse did not begin as well as it has in its most recent starts and from that point he was disappointed with the way it performed, he is also of the opinion that the gelding is better in races over a further distance. He added that in his opinion it raced like a tired horse and he had recommended to connections to spell the horse. Tr D. Gardiner reported that he believed the horse raced flat and that he was going to send the gelding for an immediate spell
Race 2: Tattersalls Hotel Class B H’cap – 1090m
1st – Windsong 2nd – Owie 3rd – Midnight Agenda 4th – Lastovo
The start of this race was delayed when OWIE proved difficult to load. After taking into consideration submissions from Tr D. Deans, stewards placed a warning on the horse, and informed Mr Deans that if the horse behaved in a similar manner in future it would have to satisfy stewards in an official trial prior to being permitted to start again.
LASTOVO (A. Coome) and OWIE (App. K. Yoneyama) were very slow to begin.
WINDSONG (M. Cant) which began very awkwardly, shifted wider on the track to improve at the 600m and raced wide from that point on.
OWIE raced wide throughout.
When queried into the seemingly improved performance of WINDSONG, M. Cant the rider of the gelding today, and at its two most recent starts, stated that the blinkers had been removed today and in his opinion this resulted in the horse racing much more tractably and definitely improved its performance in it being able to finish the race off strongly.
The trainer of MAGIC TURBO, Ms M. Hassam, advised stewards that she was disappointed with the run and in her opinion the going closer to the rail, where the gelding raced, may have been the heavier part of the track. Ms Hassam later reported that the horse recovered from the race slower than she would have liked and would not back the gelding up next week as originally intended.
Race 3: Young Australia Hotel Maiden Plt – 1090m
Equal 1st – Inthanon Equal 1st – Rockin’ Me 3rd – Romantic Baby 4th – Running For Roses
RUNNING FOR ROSES (R. Faehr) lost ground at the start when inconvenienced by ROCKIN’ ME (D. Gill) which began very awkwardly and shifted in abruptly.
ROMANTIC BABY (K. Pedron) and RUNNING FOR ROSES raced wide throughout.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the connections and riders of INTHANON and ROCKIN’ ME, who were declared by the judge to have dead-heated for 1st place, to view the photo finish of the race. After viewing the photo, connections and riders of both horses were satisfied with the result and correct weight was declared on the numbers semaphored.
Race 4: Independent Distillers/East-End Hotel Summer Cup Open H’cap – 1212m
1st – Frenardi 2nd – Queen of Happiness 3rd – High Dee 4th – Once More Brother
Stewards acceded to a request from Trainer D. Gardiner to allow jockey R. Faehr to replace App. S. Wiseman as the rider of TANZILL as there were not any apprentices available.
The start of this race was delayed to allow a Veterinary examination of ORMOND ROAD (K. Pedron) which struck the gate with its off side hindquarters when being led on to the track. ORMOND ROAD was passed fit to start.
The start was further delayed when QUEEN OF HAPPINESS (D. Gill) placed her off hind leg on the ledge in the barrier gates. The barrier attendants were able to coax the filly into standing correctly without incident and she was declared fit to start.
FRENARDI (I. Coombes) raced wide in the early stages.
FIRE HAZARD (App. K. Gates), HIGH DEE (App. F. Freihaut), HOT FLUSHES (C. Kearney) and QUEEN OF HAPPINESS all raced wide throughout.
Jockey R. Faehr reported that TANZILL hung out throughout the race.
ONCE MORE BROTHER (M. Cant) was inclined to lay out over the final 200m placing its rider at a disadvantage.
Correct weight was delayed to check the official 5th placegetter as posted by the judge, as jockey R. Faehr reported to stewards upon returning to scale that he believed that his mount, TANZILL, finished in 5th position and App. S. Arnold, the rider of CRAIGLEA WARRIOR, which was semaphored as the 5th placegetter, reported that he did not believe he finished 5th. The judge was requested to review his numbers posted and after re-checking the finish line footage the 5th placegetter was changed and correct weight declared on the revised numbers:
1st 3 Frenardi
2nd 10 Queen of Happiness
3rd 5 High Dee
4th 9 Once More Brother
5th 12 Tanzill
Trainer N. Boyle reported that STAR OF MINTO (App. C. Priest) lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 5: Railway Hotel Class 2 H’cap – 1212m
1st – Challoman 2nd – Over the Page 3rd – Red Tsar 4th – Tic Toc Tiger
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Trainer M. Reardon into the reason why Jockey R Faehr was a late declaration as the rider of JUDGES VERDICT.
Stewards took no direct action against any individual; after taking evidence from the Trainer of GYPSY STORM, D. Schultz, Jockey R. Hancock, Apprentice K. James and her master, Trainer I. Livingstone into the reasons why Jockey Hancock was dually engaged on KILANTE and GYPSY STORM; other than to remind all concerned of their obligations regarding booking riders and accepting rides. Stewards also permitted App. James to replace R. Hancock on GYPSY STORM and ride the mare at its handicapped weight, without taking advantage of her claim, as it was a late pick up ride. App James was reminded of her obligations to get down to her riding weight when accepting rides in future.
Stewards acceded to a request from Trainer D. Schultz to allow jockey K. Pedron to replace App. S. Wiseman as the rider of BIG WILL as there were not any apprentices available.
RESONATING (D. Gill) reared at the start losing considerable ground.
GYPSY STORM (App. K. James) was slow to begin.
TIC TOC TIGER (A. Coome), RESONATING and GYPSY STORM raced wide throughout.
Approaching the turn at the 850m, JUDGES VERDICT (R. Faehr) had to be steadied when tightened for room by MEAN MACHINE (M. Cant), which shifted in and away from OVER THE PAGE (App. C. Priest), which shifted in slightly. Jockey R. Faehr reported that JUDGES VERDICT resented the kickback from the horses in front of him from that point on and he was unable to get the gelding into the race.
Apprentice K. James reported that rounding the home turn she accidentally struck CHALLOMAN (I. Coombes) on the head with her whip.
The rider of KILANTE, R. Hancock, reported that the gelding resented the sand kickback from other runners shortly after the start, and in his opinion proved a little disappointing from that point on.
Apprentice S. Arnold, the rider of BRENNAN, reported that his mount jumped and raced well early, however, at the 500m when he pressured the gelding it did not respond to his urgings and in his opinion felt as though it was racing like a tired horse. Trainer B. Gill reported that he was going to send the horse for an immediate spell.
