NUAL (B. Cornell) was slow to begin

Race 3 Class 2 Handicap - 1200 Metres- 11 Starters
C. Puls replaced D. Yendall as the rider of NARYILCO LAD when he was unable to contacted after being declared for the ride by trainer Mr G. Birchmore.
NORTHERN SURF (T. Watson) was slow to begin and raced ungenerously in the early stages of the race. Rider T. Watson reported that the horse resented dirt being thrown in its face in the early stages of the race.

Race 4 1999 Birdsville Cup – 1600 Metres- 10 Starters
Stewards questioned rider P. Denton in relation to a report that he had removed lead from his lead bag after weighing out. P. Denton stated that he had in fact taken 2 pieces of lead from the bag and placed one piece in the side of each of his riding boots. Stewards monitored his weight and found a variation of 0.04kg after the race. No action was taken.
C. Puls replaced D. Yendall as the rider of READY TO FIRE when he was unable to contacted after being declared for the ride by trainer Mr. N. Peoples.
PAID REPLY (C. Tyler) was withdrawn at the barriers by stewards on the advice of the starter. A subsequent veterinary inspection revealed superficial cuts, abrasions and bleeding from both hind hocks. All bets on PAID REPLY were refunded and winning bets made prior to the withdrawal were subject to a deduction of 5 cents in the dollar for the win and 5 cents in the dollar for the place on the face value of the ticket. The deductions were declared in accordance with the provisions of LR147 and the Racing and Betting Act.
READY TO FIRE (C. Puls) raced wide at the 800 metre turn.

Race 5 Open Handicap - 1200 Metres – 8 Starters

Race 6 Maiden Handicap - 1200 Metres – 8 Starters
The start was delayed due to dust storm. CROMDALE (E. Carter) broke through the barriers prior to the start and was withdrawn by order of the stewards. All bets on CROMDALE were refunded and winning bets made prior to the withdrawl were subject to a deduction of 14 cents in the dollar for the win and 13 cents in the dollar for the place on the face value of the ticket. The deductions were declared in accordance with the provisions of LR147 and the Racing and Betting Act.
Trainer Mr. G. Birchmore was instructed that CROMDALE will be required to undergo a series of barrier trials to the satisfaction of the stewards before the horse will be allowed to start.

Routine swab samples taken from all winners.

Enquiries by stewards determined that jockey D Yendall was unaware that he had been declared as a rider of some horses and had subsequently not come to the races. As all horses had been able to obtain a rider no further action was taken.
