General: Following heavy mid morning rain, Stewards conducted an inspection of the racing surface at 11.30am. The track was found to be safe for racing although the rating was assessed at slow.
Race 1: Western 4 X 4 – Class 6 Plate Distance – 1000 Metres (8 Starters).
1st - SIMPLY WONDERFUL 2nd - JAKQUIG 3rd – LACRYMA BAY 4th- HOT WATERS
As now other suitable lightweight rider was available, Stewards permitted jockey D. Price to declare 1kg overweight on his mount HOLY WATERS. Stewards took no further action against jockey Price in regards to this matter as they had been informed by the connections prior to acceptance time of the unavailability of any rider to ride at the declared weight. SIMPLY WONDERFUL (R. Lock) was fractious in the barriers just prior to the start and lost ground when a start was affected due to being slow away. PRINCESS NOVA (J. Felix) lost ground at the start when it jumped awkwardly and threw its head in the air shifting outwards and brushing with RAPIDASH (Ms D. Slack-Smith). Leaving the 800 metre mark, HOLY WATERS (D. Price) was forced to ease and steady off the heels of PRINCESS NOVA (J. Felix) who shifted inwards slightly at that point. Jockey J. Felix was instructed to exercise more care in future when permitting his horses to shift ground. Following the event, the trainer of PRINCESS NOVA, Mr. J.A. Swift reported that the mare had cast its off-side front racing plate in running. Following the running of this event, Stewards spoke to all riders in regards to the racing surface and whilst all riders agreed that the surface was safe for racing, they all reported that it was quite heavy on the inside.
Race 2: PKF Mount Barker Chartered Accountants – Class 2 Handicap Distance – 1200 Metres (9 Starters).
1st – RHYME ROYAL 2nd – KALANI BOY 3rd – HONOR’S ADVOCATE 4th- BULL BLINCO
Both HOT SADDLES and OSHABERI (who were also acceptances for the Bedourie meeting today) were scratched after final acceptances. Approaching the 1000 metre mark HONOR’S ADVOCATE (Ms D. Slack-Smith) was crowded for racing room when VILLA BELLA (D. Price) hung in slightly at that point. Stewards questioned jockey D. Price the rider of VILLA BELLA in relation to the poor performance of that runner in today’s event. Jockey Price reported that after travelling well in the early stages of the event, the horse was under pressure from the 600 metre mark and was a beaten horse shortly thereafter. Jockey Price was of the opinion that the mare was never comfortable on today’s racing surface and this combined with her recent two starts at last weekend’s Birdsville carnival had left the mare flat. All comments were noted for future reference. Stewards also questioned jockey L. Critoph the rider of FLASH ARTHUR in relation to the gelding’s poor performance in today’s event. Jockey Critoph stated that after riding the horse in a forward position as per the instructions of the owner, the horse had travelled well to the entrance of the straight but was immediately under pressure shortly thereafter. Jockey Critoph was of the opinion that the horse would race better if allowed to race back in the field and he had conveyed these comments to the connections of the gelding. The explanations from Jockey Critoph were also noted for future reference.
Race 3: Xstrata Copper – Maiden Plate Distance – 1200 Metres (5 Starters).
1st – ITISISIT (NZ) 2nd- JUNGLELAND 3rd – MONACAIRD 4th- GOLDEN SPIDER
FRODO BAGGINS (Apprentice S. Kavanagh) jumped awkwardly with its head in the air when the gates were released. MONACAIRD (A. Layt) jumped inwards and brushed with JUNGLELAND (D. Price). Leaving the 600 metre mark ITISISIT (NZ) (A. Spradau) shifted outwards forcing both JUNGLELAND (D. Price) and MONACAIRD (A. Layt) to race wider on the track at that point.
Race 4: Queensland Country Life & North Queensland Register - Class 4 Handicap Distance – 1400 Metres (5 Starters).
1st – SEXY SUZE 2nd – SCROLLS (NZ) 3rd – REGULUS (NZ) 4th – REGAL KELLINA
UMALORD, BUSTER COOMA and TOURNIQUET were all scratched from this event after final acceptances. ROMAN CHARIOT (L. Critoph) jumped inwards at the start resulting in its rider’s right arm striking the front gate of its starting stall. Jockey L. Critoph the rider of ROMAN CHARIOT was admonished by Stewards for permitting his mount to shift inwards approaching the 400 metre mark resulting in REGULUS (NZ) (R. Lock) having to ease and alter course. Following the running of this event, Jockey L. Critoph was treated by the ambulance officer in attendance for a small wound to the right forearm and passed fit to fulfill his remaining riding engagement.
Race 5: Sport Of Kings – Open Handicap Distance – 1400 Metres (8 Starters).
1st - LADY JAY 2nd - SOMERSET ROAD 3rd - PROUD MARK 4th - GOLD CRACKER (NZ)
Both SCARLEX (NZ) and GIBBERISH were scratched after final acceptances. The connections of SCARLEX (NZ) furnished to the Stewards a Veterinary Certificate, declaring the gelding unfit to race. LADY JAY (A. Spradau) was extremely fractious in the barriers just prior to the start, kicking up on several occasions. SOMERSET ROAD (Apprentice S. Kavanagh) lost ground at the start when very slow away. Approaching the 400 metre mark GOLD CRACKER (NZ) (D. Price) was held up an unable to obtain clear running when racing behind the tiring race leaders CEDAR LODGE (A. Layt) and STORMY MO (D. Jones) resulting in Jockey Price having to ease his mount and alter course to the outside in an endeavour to obtain clear running. As a result GOLD CRACKER (NZ) lost ground.
