Stewards today questioned trainer R. Moller concerning the improved performance of ICON PRINCE at Atherton on 31/07/99. He stated that he was disappointed with the run at Townsville on 24/07/99 and attributed the improvement to the drop in class between the two events.

EL QABOW stumbled at the start. Rounding the home turn KUMILIPO had to momentarily steady off the heels off BRAVE OCTANE which shifted out.
Race 4: CAIRNS POST CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1300M (8 STARTERS after L/S)
REEF ROULETTE was declared a late scratching at 1.35pm after that mare refused to be loaded into the barriers. Stewards ordered deductions of 6 cents for a win and 6 cents for a place applicable to all successful bets placed prior to the scratching time. Trainer W. Massingham was advised that he must obtain two further barrier certificates for REEF ROULETTE. He was also advised that the mare will be ineligible to be entered to race at TAB meetings until further notified. Inside the 1200m IDLE PIRATE shifted in and inconvenienced VATULELE. A short distance later BE EARLY and VATULELE were crowded for room between GOLD EDGE and SWEETENER both of which shifted ground. BOURSIER which compounded in the home straight was examined by the veterinary officer and found to be sore in the near knee.

PROVINCIA continued to race ungenerously for some distance. Inside the 200m SEMAJON had to steadied off the heels of ICON PRINCE which shifted out under pressure. SAINTLY SPY shifted in slightly under pressure and contributed to this incident.
Race 8: PACIFIC TOYOTA CAIRNS CUP OPEN HANDICAP 2100M (14 STARTERS)
TOPIYM jumped out at the start and tightened REGAL GOSSIP onto MATAHOOM. M. Sullivan was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he allowed his mount CENTALIERI to shift in when not clear resulting in TOPIYM having to be severely checked. As a result TOPIYM shifted out and hampered REGAL GOSSIP which in turn forced ZAMORANO wider on the track. M. Sullivan was suspended up to and including 28/08/99. Rounding the home turn PREFER A TIME, which was tiring appeared to shift out resulting in MR. BEST having to be checked by its rider B. Trinder.
