General: As M. McDuff was indisposed through illness, the following replacements were approved: R1 TATAURANGI (M. Cullen) R2 NAJEEB (C. Whitely) R3 SUNSET WALK (R. Ryan) R4 CHAMBIRA (M. Cullen) R5 FOREVER A LADY (I. Toward). As C. Lennon became indisposed through injury he was replaced as the rider of ROYAL RAIDER (R1) by R. Gallagher. As P. Cullen was overweight, the following replacements were approved: R1 BORN SO VAIN (Ms. D. Philpot) R5 ZEPHYR BITE (G. Watson). P. Cullen was fined $50 for being overweight. As R. Ryan was overweight, the following replacements were approved: R1 SAYDER (G. White) R6 PALOOKA (M. Cullen). R. Ryan was fined $100 for being overweight.

Race 1: SIR HENRY ABEL-SMITH CAIRNS POST MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000M (12 STARTERS).
WIILY TOLD was slow to begin. At the 900m EL IRISH had to be momentarily steadied off the heels of ROCKFORD which shifted in. C. Whitely, the rider of NON FERROUS was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in approaching the 700m resulting in MOWBRAY PARK (G. Philpot) having to be steadied. MOWBRAY PARK commenced to race ungenerously and inside the 500m had to be restrained off the heels of TATAURANGI. CANADIAN BOY hung out around the home turn.

Race 2: BUNDABERG SUGAR CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1000M (12 STARTERS)
Trainer E. Covell was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for MEMOR, after the gelding proved difficult to load. NAJEEB and MICHAEL’S MATE came together at the start. Approaching the 700m NAJEEB (C. Whitely) had to be checked between VAIN STREAK which shifted out slightly and CHIEF STORM which shifted in and away from SPRING REGENT (G. Philpot). G. Philpot was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. R. Gallagher reported that MICHAEL’S MATE hung out during the race.

Race 3: THE ESCO BANGLE CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1250M (12 STARTERS)
Shortly after the start, FORGIVE had to be steadied off the heels of TIMELY ADVICE which shifted out abruptly.

Race 4: THIESS SPRING OPEN HANDICAP 1400M (14 STARTERS)
RIVER REACH, CHAMBIRA, SALTASH CASTLE and BEYOND SPACE were all crowded at the start between CALCULATED RISK and TATA TED which stumbled and jumped away awkwardly. Approaching the first turn TATA TED which was racing fiercely had to be restrained off the heels of DON’T LOOK. W. Kenning the rider of THERMIDOR was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in under pressure at the 100m resulting in BULL ALLEN having to be steadied.

Race 5: GOVERNOR’S TROPHY CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1000M (9 STARTERS)
Rounding the home turn MAGEE’S DANCER blundered after clipping the heels of JET WAVE.

Race 6: MERCEDES-BENZ CUP OPEN HANDICAP 1000M (10 STARTERS)
Approaching the 900m DARING LAD and GAMER were crowded for room between DEREHAM and PALOOKA both of which shifted ground. Rounding the home turn ELROND was held up behind the heels of DARING LAD which shifted in and contacted the running rail at the 550m. Approaching the 200m DARING LAD shifted in under pressure and momentarily hampered ELROND. A post race vet examination of STAR OF ST. JUDE revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the inside of its mouth.

Race 7: TARGET CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1400M (14 STARTERS)
JAKE THE PEG jumped out at the start and tightened CAYMAN ISLAND onto DOUBLE TIME. GO BOY stood as the gates opened and lost ground as a result. Approaching the 1200m MR. CENTREFOLD shifted out abruptly and bumped SWEETENER out onto TOLEDO TWIG, which had to be steadied to avoid the heels of PAUL’S SAINT. JAKE THE PEG which was following had to steady off the heels of PAUL’S SAINT. GRACELANDS hung out around the first turn. Rounding the home turn TOLEDO TWIG had to be checked off the heels of INNUENDO, which was forced wide on the track by GRACELANDS, which again hung out. Stewards cautioned M. Campbell for attempting to gather up his reins whilst rounding the turn on GRACELANDS, particularly after the gelding had displayed a tendency to hang. Inside the 250m GRACELANDS shifted in despite the efforts of its rider and crowded GO BOY onto PAUL’S SAINT. DOUBLE TIME was unable to obtain clear running in the straight until inside the final 50m.

Race 8: BANK OF QUEENSLAND CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1250M (12 STARTERS)
WHISKEY HEART blundered at the start. JACOB’S JOKER made the 600M crossing awkwardly and shifted out bumping BRAVE OCTANE. Inside the 200m SOLOMON PRINCE shifted out under pressure and bumped DYNAMIC PROFIT out onto BRAVE OCTANE.

Eight winners and CAYMAN ISLAND were swabbed.
