STEWARDS : Mr P.Cooper (Chairman)
Mr W.Abell, Mr B.Gray, Mr G.Govan, Ms J.Steele
Weather : Fine Track : Good
RACE ONE Maiden Handicap 950 Metres 9 Starters
As the gates opened CREEK BOUND (P.Crich) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with REPUBLICA (App N.Homann). At approximately the 300mtr mark HEMMANT FLASH (F.Edwards), CANTUS (K.Rockett) and HAYLEY’S REIGN (K.Brady) all slipped momentarily upon straightening. Following the running of this event the Stewards accompanied by a delegation of riders inspected the course proper at the home turn. The inspection revealed that from the home turn to the winning post had been well watered and the track prior to the home turn was very hard and dry which provided an inconsistent racing surface. All parties agreed to continue with the meeting and to monitor the track as the meeting progressed.
RACE TWO Class 1 Handicap 1400 Metres 8 Starters
As the start was effected ALLEZ SLEW (I.Toward) jumped outwards and KATYUSHKA (K.Rockett) jumped inwards which resulted in a general tightening of the field soon after the start. KATYUSHKA (K.Rockett) raced wide on the track when rounding the 800mtr turn. HOPE FLOATS (K.Brady) slipped momentarily at the 600mtr mark. It was reported by Ms L.Ashford the trainer of DINTY’S PLACE (R.Hall) that the mount had been struck on the head by the whip of RUB THE BUDA (App D.Crossland) at approximately the 700mtr mark. The Stewards ruled that the incident was accidental and no further action was taken. Jockey R.Hall was severely reprimanded by the Stewards for using an excessive amount of whip on DINTY’S PLACE from the home turn to the winning post when the mount was out of contention.
RACE THREE Class 6 Handicap 1400 Metres 5 Starters
Jockey D.Philpot was reprimanded for allowing her mount to shift inwards over the concluding stages of the event and hamper the running of TRANQUIL DANCER (F.Edwards) which in turn made contact with the hind quarters of HIGHEST ORDER (B.Corbett). FOR KEEPS returned to the enclosure lame in the Near-Hind fetlock. Trainer M.Spannagle was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance prior to the horse being permitted to start.
RACE FOUR Class 5 Handicap 1200 Metres 6 Starters
No incidents in running.
RACE FIVE Special Conditions Handicap 1200 Metres 6 Starters
No incidents in running.
RACE SIX Class 3 Handicap 950 Metres 8 Starters
COPRA BELLE (D.Philpot) suffered an attack of bleeding and broke through the outside running rail at approximately the 600mtr mark. The horse died after breaking through a further fence on the track. Jockey D.Philpot was dislodged from CAPRA BELLE at the 600mtr mark and was given immediate medical attention by the attending ambulance officials before being transported to hospital for further treatment.
GENERAL REPORT:
Stewards concluded an inquiry which was adjourned from Atherton on the 23rd September 2000 into the reason for Jockey B.Corbett weighing out for the final event when not wearing a body protector. After taking further evidence Jockey Corbett was charged with a breach of Ar175(a) and subsequently fined the amount of $1000.
