STREET MARCH (D. Crossland) was slow to begin.
OUR DAY WILL COME (J. Stopps) raced ungenerously for a short distance near the 300m.
Connections reported that TIBOOBURRA EMMA (M. Atkinson) was suffering from superficial abrasions to both hind legs after being galloped on.
On returning to scale STREET MARCH was found to have bled from both nostrils. As this was the gelding’s first bleeding attack, Trainer T. Crossland was advised that STREET MARCH would be barred from racing for 3 months and would be required to gallop 1000m in the presence of a Steward before being permitted to race again under the provisions of AR 53A(4)(b).
A post-race veterinary examination of TOP ROSS revealed the gelding to be lame Veterinary Surgeon that TOP ROSS (J. Dickinson) was due to a torn near side hamstring. Trainer G. Porter was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required before the gelding will be permitted to race again. Mr Porter advised that TOP ROSS would now be retired.
Race 2: Book Your Xmas Race Day Party Class 6 Plate – 960 Metres
1st – Surpasser 2nd – Physics 3rd – De Ville 4th – Danzig Dancer
DE VILLE (S. Kaya) and VALDA THERESE (M. Cullen) both raced wide rounding the home turn.
Near the 200 metres SURPASSER (W. D Ávila) shifted out abruptly of its own accord.
When questioned as to the performance of DANZIG DANCER, Jockey Toward stated that the mare was overly fractious today particularly in the barriers. Jockey Toward added that DANZIG DANCER travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages until the 600m where he felt the mare was galloped on, after which it failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed skin damage to the off hind fetlock area. Jockey Toward’s explanation was noted.
Race 3: Piccones Shopping Village Class 4 Handicap - 1500 Metres
1st – Baramul Bullet 2nd – Midnite Raid 3rd – Genapery 4th – Startus
PACIFIC HIGHWAY was a late scratching at 9.13am when found to be lame in the off fore. Trainer G. Wehlow provided a veterinary certificate upon arriving on course.
STARTUS (J. Dickinson) raced wide throughout.
MIDNITE RAID (S. Kaya) and GENAPERU (M. Cullen) bumped several times in the straight.
Race 4: Cairns Steel Class B Handicap – 1400 Metres
1st – Struckbylightning 2nd – Harley John 3rd – Kandee Queen 4th – Captain Sir
CHRONIC (W. D’ Avila) was slow to begin and then raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 5: Fowlers Group Open Handicap – 1250 Metres
1st – Fred The Legion 2nd – Keen On You 3rd – Triptiz 4th – General Ledger
Near the 300m GUNS (I. Toward) knuckled badly, causing Jockey Toward to become severely unbalanced. GUNS was then eased out of the event after Jockey Toward became concerned that the gelding may have been injured. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any lameness or abnormalities however revealed that a shifted near fore hoof pad may have caused GUNS to knuckle over at that point of the event.
