GLAURUNG (App. N. Yadi) was slow into stride.
Near the 600 metres AY GEE (S. Kaya) resented racing in restricted room to the inside of MAINSHAFT (M. Cullen), which shifted in marginally and as a result threw its head in the air, shifted out, lost considerable ground and inconvenienced BAZZA’S BID (J. P. Stanley). Trainer Mr W. Swinton was advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of AY GEE. Nevertheless Mr Swinton undertook to trial the gelding in a jump-out prior to it next racing.
Approaching the 400 metres ROSSCO THE HUNTER (App. S. Wiseman) was forced to ease when racing to the inside of AY GEE, which shifted in.
Jockey J. P. Stanley reported to stewards that after beginning well BAZZA’S BID failed to muster early speed as he had intended and as a result he settled further back in the field than he had anticipated. Jockey Stanley added that the gelding, which was having its first start in North Queensland, raced without blinkers today and he was of the opinion that this may have contributed to the horse failing to muster speed, as it had at its most recent starts, therefore he had recommended to connections that the blinkers be returned as part of the horse’s approved gear. Following the race the representative of trainer G. Doolan reported that the off hind leg of BAZZA’S BID had been galloped on.
Following the running of this race, at 1.19 p.m. the track rating was upgraded from a DEAD (5) to a DEAD (4) retrospectively.
Race 2: Bugeja Earthmoving Sir Sydney Williams OBE Class 4 Handicap - 950 metres
1st BESIEGED 2nd MERIDITH 3rd MELAKAI 4th - CHEW THE FAT
HARLEY JOHN (App. B. Swaffer) and PLAY A KING (D. Hayse) were slow to begin.
SEEK DE FORTUNE (R. Thompson) began awkwardly and lost ground.
Rounding the home turn BESIEGED (App. E. Ljung) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Near the 400 metres MEREDITH (W. D’Avila) improved onto the heels of the tiring EL BLAZING TIME (App. S. Wiseman) and had to be steadied.
When questioned about the disappointing performance of SEEK DE FORTUNE, Jockey R. Thompson explained that the gelding began awkwardly and failed to muster early speed Jockey Thompson added that the gelding travelled comfortably in the middle stages, however when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Trainer Ms J. Ryan was at a loss to explain the poor performance of the gelding today. Ms Ryan advised that she will endeavour to nominate SEEK DE FORTUNE for a race over a longer distance than today’s event for the gelding’s next start. Ms Ryan undertook to advise stewards if anything was amiss with SEEK DE FORTUNE in the days following the event.
Following the race App. J. Kuskopf reported that JUST NIKKI felt sore on pulling up. A post-race veterinary examination of JUST NIKKI revealed the mare to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer Ms P. D’Addona was advised that she must provide a veterinary clearance prior to JUST NIKKI being permitted to race again.
Race 3: Quicksilver QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap - 1250 metres

STANDFORD (App. S. Wiseman) hung out badly in the middle stages and near the 400 metres the saddle shifted to the off side, resulting in App. Wiseman losing her use of her irons. Trainer T. Rowe advised stewards that it was now his intention to spell STANFORD. Nevertheless, he was notified that STANDFORD must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start.
In the early part of the home straight DRAGON SIGN had a tendency to lay in under pressure and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of HE’S A LADIES MAN.
Stewards questioned Jockey W. D’Avila in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of DAZZLE ON. Jockey D’Avila reported that after beginning well, the gelding settled comfortably until near the 600 metres, however when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. Jockey D’Avila added that on pulling up, DAZZLE ON was making an abnormal respiratory sound. Trainer R. Chillemi was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of DAZZLE ON, however he did note that in his opinion DAZZLE ON is much better suited racing over shorter distances than today’s 1250 metres. Mr Chillemi advised that, based on Jockey D’Avila’s assessment that the gelding may have had a respiratory abnormality, he will now experiment with a change of gear to alleviate the problem. A post-race veterinary examination of DAZZLE ON did not reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 4: Carlton Mid Handicap – 950 Metres
1st – HUSS 2nd ASSIMILATOR 3rd - MAZUKA 4th - ORIENTELLE 5th - CANHEDANCE
ASSIMILATOR (A. Coome) and ORIENTELLE (App. S. Wiseman) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 500 metres SUN WARRIOR (App. N. Yadi) was tightened for room and forced to check when racing to the inside of CAMPHOR (App. E. Ljung), which in turn was racing to the inside of MAZUKA (App. B. Swaffer). As a result, ASSIMILATOR (A. Coome) which was following was forced to shift out inconveniencing, CANHEDANCE (G. Kliese), BEURRE (S. Kaya), FAST ‘N’ FEROCIOUS (W. D’Avila) and ERFAAN (C. Whiteley) to varying degrees. As the evidence provided at the inquiry into the incident and the patrol films were inconclusive, stewards were unable to assign fault to any one rider. Stewards noted that the incident was one of significance, however based on the lack of conclusive evidence no further action was taken.
SUN WARRIOR (N. Yadi) hung out rounding the home turn.
Following the running of this race the track rating was upgraded to a GOOD (3).

1st MOHTASHEM 2nd - PEMBERTON 3rd BREAKTHROUGH 4th - KATTER
After MOHTASHEM over-raced in the early stages Jockey C. Whiteley allowed the gelding to stride forward and obtain a leading position approaching the 1000 metres.
On returning to scale Jockey R. Thompson reported that in the home straight PEMBERTON had a tendency to hang in.
Approaching the 200 metres NO WONDER (D.Simmons) improved onto the heels of BONGIORNO (L. Smith) and was forced to shift to the outside to obtain clear running.

Jockey S. Kaya, the rider of ZIGURAT, pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct under A.R. 175(q) in that on returning to scale after riding ZIGURAT, in the hearing and vision of members of the public, he threw his saddle to the ground and used abusive and foul language on a number of occasions.
