Race 1: Underwood Hire Harry Fitzgerald Maiden Handicap - 1250 metres
1st – DR PEGASUS 2nd EDITORIALE 3rd WISHFUL 4th - PRINCE DAN

The start was delayed initially when JACSAID (M. Elliott) broke through the barriers, was quickly restrained, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field. The start was further delayed when DELAGO POWER (App. E. Ljung) proved difficult to load into the barriers. Trainer F. Wieland was advised that a warning will be placed on the barrier manners of DELAGO POWER.

At the start PRINCE DAN (A. Coome) was tightened for room between NAGA VIPER (App. B. Swaffer) and DR PEGASUS (I. Toward), which was taken out by EDIORIALE (L. Smith), which had a tendency to lay out in the early stages of the race.

Shortly after the start DR PEGASUS, PRINCE DAN, NAGA VIPER, and WISHFUL (App. S. Wiseman) were tightened for room and forced to steady when racing between EDITORIALE, which was shifting out, and DELAGO POWER, which shifted in when not completely clear. Stewards questioned Jockey S. Kaya, the rider of ARCOBALENOS, as to why he failed to maintain his position on the running rail in a leading position passing the 800m. Jockey Kaya advised that in his opinion the tempo of the race at the stage was strong and as such he was not of the view that he should pressure his mount and therefore allowed other runners to move forward of him at that point of the race. Jockey Kaya said that near the 500 metres JACSAID (M. Elliot) improved forward of him, which placed him in restricted room and he was forced to steady momentarily. Jockey Kaya stated that from this point he may have erred in not placing his mount under more pressure rounding the home turn sooner then he did, resulting in him losing further ground. Stewards advised Jockey Kaya that in their opinion at a point approaching the 700 metres he should have endeavoured to place ARCOBALENOS under greater pressure to maintain his leading position, as opposed to allowing other runners to improve to his outside. While stewards felt that Jockey Kaya’s riding did not fall below the required standard, nevertheless they advised him that his riding had come under notice and that he should make every endeavour to ensure that his riding does not come into question in the future.
