Race 1: Century Cranes Class 5 Handicap – 950 metres
1st – BOOM SHA LA 2nd – FAMILY FREEZE 3rd – SUNSETS ON FIRE 4th – STAUNCH NORTH

Jockey S. Pawsey was fined $100 under A.R. 120(b) for being overweight for DIVA DIOR. As no other suitable rider was available, stewards permitted Jockey Pawsey to ride the mare 1/2 kg over its declared weight.

DRAGON SIGN (D. Simmons) shifted in at the start and made contact with EXCEEDED (F. Edwards).

Shortly after the start, DRAGON SIGN (App. B. Swaffer), which was inclined to lay in despite the efforts of its rider, shifted in and crowded DIVA DIOR in onto STAUNCH NORTH (S. Wilson). For some distance thereafter DRAGON SIGN continued to lay in, raced ungenerously and bumped with DIVA DIOR, which was taken in onto STAUNCH NORTH.

Rounding the home turn FAMILY FREEZE (R. Thompson) shifted out marginally and crowded EXCEEDED out onto DRAGON SIGN.

In the early part of the home straight DIVA DIOR was inclined to lay in.

DRAGON SIGN raced wide throughout.

A post-race veterinary examination of FORTRUS LAD (T. Bannon) revealed that the gelding had bled from both nostrils. Trainer G. Baker was advised that, as this was the second occasion on which FORTRUS LAD had bled, the gelding will be ineligible to start in any race.

Race 2: ALSCO Maiden Handicap – 950 metres
1st – EBONY GOLD 2nd - RECONCILIATION 3rd – KAROONDA 4th – ROMAN VIRTUE

At the request of its rider, DELATITE DASH (J. Lyon) was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon after arriving behind the barriers. Acting on her advice that the mare was lame in the near foreleg, stewards ordered the withdrawal of DELATITE DASH at 2.09 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on DELATITE DASH be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:

11¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner EBONY GOLD
17¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, EBONY GOLD
13¢ in the dollar for the place for the 2nd, RECONCILIATION
15¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, KAROONDA

Trainer Mr R. Chillemi was advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance for DELATITE DASH prior to the mare being permitted to race again.

Passing the 200 metres ROMAN VIRTUE (S. Wilson) shifted out and bumped KAROONDA

On returning to scale Jockey R. Thompson reported that KISSER raced greenly and was inclined to lay in under pressure.

App. J. Kuskopf pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that passing the 550 metres she allowed EBONY GOLD to shift in when not clear of WANGAN EXPRESS, which had to be checked and lost its rightful running, resulting in EFFERVESCENT (App. S.Wiseman), which was following, having to be checked, shifted out abruptly and making heavy contact with CAIDEN’S COMMAND (App. B. Wilson), which was following, had to be severely checked to avoid the fallen rider. Jockey M. Pegus was transported to Cairns Hospital for observation.

In the middle stages READ ALL ABOUT ME raced ungenerously.

In the home straight MUCH ABOUT laid in.

Near the 150 metres Jockey J. Lyon, the rider of DAZZLUNA, accidentally dropped his whip.

When the pace slowed in the early stages Jockey C. Whiteley allowed KING OF THE FOREST to stride forward and take up a forward position.

For some distance rounding the home turn LIVINGSTON (S. Pawsey) was held up on the heels of the weakening TOWSER (J. Dickinson).
