Stewards today concluded their enquiries with regard to a complaint lodged by Mr J QUILLIGAN regarding an alleged incident between himself and registered stablehand Mr S BELL Jnr during the course of the Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting on Saturday 20 November 1999. Further evidence was taken from both parties along with a number of witnesses, they being Mr J Page, Mrs P Davis, Mrs I Melbourne and Mr S Bell Snr. Stewards subsequently found Mr S Bell Jnr guilty of a charge under AR175A after the manner in which he conducted himself towards Mr J Quilligan in the members area on the abovementioned date was in the opinion of the Stewards, conduct prejudicial to the image and interests of racing. RACE 1 – GREEN AND DEACON MAIDEN HANDICAP 1ST DIVISION – 1,200 METRES
Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of AAKHBAR at 11:37 a.m. after being advised by the Trainer J W D DUKE that the horse was lame in the off fore leg. This was later confirmed after an inspection by the club’s veterinary surgeon.
On jumping GWYDIR GEM jumped very awkwardly.
ANIMATE was slowly away.
In the early and middle stages of the race GWYDIR GEM was inclined to over-race.
Approaching the 800 metres turn MIGHTY MAN which was racing greenly shifted out hampering ANIMATE which subsequently lost ground.
Leaving the 600 metres THIEF OF TIME which was making ground was obliged to cover excessive ground, particularly rounding the home turn.
Rounding the home turn GWYDIR GEM shifted out slightly resulting in MARY SOMETHING which was following to be steadied.
Stewards questioned P CUDDIHY (ANIMATE) with regard to the manner in which the horse was ridden today. He explained that his mount was indeed slow to jump and in the early and middle stages of the race was reluctant to race amongst other horses and for some distance leaving the 600 metres he was unable to go forward when held up behind a number of runners. He also added that he was able to obtain a run rounding the home turn and at that point was of the view that the colt was travelling well enough to win. He further stated that he only struck his mount with the whip every second stride due to his mount wanting to run about.
RACE 2 – SIMPLE SOLUTIONS MAIDEN HANDICAP 2ND DIVISION – 1,200 METRES
As P WOLFGRAM was indisposed the following riding replacements were approved:
Race 2 – M PRIVATO SURPRISE ATTACK

ALL THE TRIMMINGS was slowly away.
At the start CANDY WALK and AWESOME EDGE made contact.
Stewards questioned both Jockey S GALLOWAY and Trainer G DUNN regarding the disappointing performance of MOSES today. S GALLOWAY offered no real excuses, however, did explain that on entering the straight the colt did falter in its action and was of the view that the horse may have been lame. Trainer G DUNN explained that the horse had been working well leading up to the race and he had expected a forward showing from it. The stewards advised Mr Dunn that should MOSES develop any condition in the near future to notify the stewards in due course and he was also advised that should MOSES perform similarly, that further action may have to be taken.
RACE 4 – SUPERANNUATION COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

Jockey S CAMPTON (ARAMAIC) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a), the careless riding being that rounding the home turn he directed his mount outwards making very heavy contact with FOREST FLASH which in turn also shifted out and then made contact with JUST WALK ON BY causing that horse to become unbalanced. Jockey S CAMPTON’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence immediately and to expire midnight Wednesday 8 December 1999.
Inside the final 300 metres both ARAMAIC and MINSTRELLA shifted ground under pressure.

Leaving the 700 metres KING BAY had to be restrained to avoid the heels of TANNER’S TWIST which shifted in when not quite clear. For some distance after this KING BAY raced fiercely. K PURDY (TANNER’S TWIST) was issued with a reprimand and reminded of her obligations when shifting ground.
