WEATHER - OVERCAST TRACK - DEAD RAIL - OUT 4M. ALL TRACK
RACE 1: DOOLEYS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.
As the start was effected, KEEP RISING reared and lost considerable ground.
DOLSO'S AFFAIR and NEVER IN DOUBT were also slow to begin.
Near the 900m., SAHARA REGENT was hampered when momentarily tightened for room by MAGIC OF MACKAY, which shifted in. M. Pelling, rider of MAGIC OF MACKAY, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.
When being steadied off the heels of KITCHIKAN at the 600m., STARASH shifted out, making contact with SAHARA REGENT.
A veterinary examination of KITCHIKAN, which compounded from the 500m.. revealed the filly to be suffering from heart arrhythmia. Trainer P. Moody was advised that he would be required to provide the result of an ECG prior to its next race start, and further advised that the filly must also trial to the stewards' satisfaction.
RACE 2: QUICK FIT TYRES H'CAP - 1200M.
The start was delayed when NO INTENTION proved difficult to load. Trainer P. Duff was advised that a warning was being placed on NO INTENTION with respect to its barrier manners.
ST. PLATO became unbalanced after making contact with BENEDICT at the start.
CRONICK and STAGE also made contact on jumping away.
Approaching the 900m., SWIFT AND LOYAL had to be steadied when cramped for room by ST. PLATO. L. Degaura, rider of ST. PLATA, was cautioned.
After M. Cahill, rider of STAGE, accidentally dropped his whip near the 75m., the gelding was then held up from that point until the winning post.
RACE 3: BUDGET CAR RENTAL H'CAP - 1350M.
Stewards permitted C. Reith to replace C. Maund on ICE PATROL. Trainer T. Edmonds was fined $50 for declaring C. Maund without first confirming the engagement.
ELITE SCORE jumped outwards at the start, inconveniencing DYNAMITED.
J. Byrne, rider of PAINT THE SCENE, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in at the 1200m. when not quite clear of FRONT ROW, resulting in FRONT ROW being taken in on to ICE PATROL, which lost ground when cramped for room. At the same stage, DYNAMITED also lost ground when tightened for room between ANNUNCIATION and FIELD GOAL.
FRONT ROW blundered at the 150m..
After leaving the 100m., METAL MERCHANT was hampered when cramped for room between FRONT ROW, which shifted out slightly under pressure, and SUPERSTEAM, which was taken in slightly by ANNUNCIATION. Both K. Pope, rider of ANNUNCIATION, and S. Katsidis, rider of FRONT ROW, were cautioned and urged to make more effort to keep their mounts on a true course.
Stable representative Mr P. Heazlett and J. Byrne were questioned regarding the tactics adopted today on PAINT THE SCENE as compared to those tactics adopted when the horse finished 6th at Doomben on 1 January. Mr Heazlett explained that the instructions were to allow the horse to settle in the field where comfortable, with the primary aim of gaining cover. He added it was anticipated that the horse may have settled somewhere midfield. J. Byrne confirmed the instructions however advised that PAINT THE SCENE had jumped extremely well and after travelling a short distance he allowed the gelding to stride forward to avoid being caught wide. The explanations were accepted.
RACE 4: SALTERS OF MOOROOKA H'CAP - 1350M.
SEMI LUSKIN jumped awkwardly.
GRAPPELLI missed the start badly. Trainer P. Duff was advised that GRAPPELLI must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start.
Passing the 1200m., OUR GOLD MAN and PEDRO'S GALLANTE made contact.
COMANCHE WARRIOR raced ungenerously throughout the middle stages, and approaching the home turn, ran out across the heels of OUR GOLD MAN of its own accord and had to be checked.
S. Seamer, rider of the 2nd placegetter, ALFRED THE GREAT, accidentally dropped his whip near the 200m..
RACE 5: KENNARDS HIRE SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.
CENTRE FORCE and LUKE'S LOOT were both slow to begin.
S. Katsidis, rider of BELLE OF SHEBA, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in just prior to the 800m., resulting in CAPTAIN SKUTTLE being restrained when tightened on to CENTRE FORCE.
Leaving the 600m., DANCE IN THE DARK had to be steadied off the heels of BIG TOUCH, which was inclined to lay in.
GOLD DREDGE was forced extremely wide on the home turn.
At the entrance to the straight, BELLE OF SHEBA was disappointed for a run between CAPTAIN SKUTTLE and BIG TOUCH, which shifted out whilst tiring.
CENTRE FORCE and LUKE'S LOOT were both held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.
RACE 6: BOB GIBBS H'CAP - 1200M.
REAL SAY was slow to begin.
LAURIE'S LOTTERY was also a little slow to begin.
When being steadied in the lead near the 1000m., BIMBADEEN got its head up and became unbalanced. TENUOUS, which was following, had to be checked off the heels of BIMBADEEN.
PACKY'S PLOT had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight.
Just prior to the finish line, HARVEY LAD had to be steadied when cramped for room between TENUOUS and LAURIE'S LOTTERY.
A veterinary examination of LEROY'S MAGIC following the event revealed a laceration to the outside of the near fore fetlock.
RACE 7: QUEENSLAND PINE BERNBOROUGH H'CAP - 1615M.
CAPTAIN SMOOTH, which was unable to be loaded, was withdrawn by stewards at 4.25 p.m.. On the announcement of correct weight, all monies invested on CAPTAIN SMOOTH were ordered to be refunded, and no alteration to betting. Trainer D. Duryea was advised he would be required to provide a further barrier test certificate for CAPTAIN SMOOTH prior to its next race start.
ARIMATHEA jumped inwards at the start, inconveniencing BROOKLET BOY and MASTER RAIDER.
Leaving the 1000m., MARDI'S MAGIC, which was pulling hard, shifted out slightly. ARIMATHEA, which was racing outside of MALLET, pulled its way up inside the heels of MARDI'S MAGIC where there was insufficient room. When MARDI'S MAGIC resumed its position, ARIMATHEA was tightened on to the hind quarters of MALLET and as a result had to be checked.
Leaving the 600m., BROOKLET BOY was momentarily cramped for room inside KING SALIERI.
C. Reith, rider of the 5th placegetter, RETIREMENT, was fined $50 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram over his declared weight.
RACE 8: PIG 'N' WHISTLE ENGLISH PUB H'CAP - 2100M.
Trainer S. Jones was fined $25 for presenting FREE MOVER without a tongue tie.
As the start was effected, CHRISTINA'S FURY reared, dislodging its rider, M. Paget. As a consequence, CHRISTINA'S FURY took no part in the race. Trainer S. Mackinnon was advised that CHRISTINA'S FURY must pass a further barrier test prior to its next race start.
From the 300m. until after leaving the 200m., LORDNOR was held up behind the tiring BOLD IMPULSE.
When questioned, G. Colless stated that SWIFT KNIGHT understandably tired over the concluding stages as as consequence of being forced to race wide throughout the event. A swab sample was taken from SWIFT KNIGHT following a veterinary examination which failed to reveal any abnormality.
ALL WINNERS AND SWIFT KNIGHT WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
