FROM BTC MEETING, 5.2.00

Stewards interviewed Mr G. Ryan in relation to the explanation provided by his foreperson Mr B. Hill following an inquiry into the performance of GOLD DREDGE at Doomben on 5 February. Also questioned were jockeys S. Seamer and M. Lister. Mr Ryan explained that S. Seamer was instructed to ride GOLD DREDGE off the pace and at no stage had he issued specific instructions to lead on the horse. He confirmed that these instructions were consistent with instructions given to M. Lister, who rode the horse on previous occasions. When questioned, M. Lister explained that in the race over 1200m. at Doomben on 15 January, the horse did not have the necessary pace to maintain a forward position and was obliged to settle midfield, and that in his opinion the gelding was not entirely comfortable in the conditions. S. Seamer stated that GOLD DREDGE had only jumped away fairly at the Doomben on 5 February, however he elected to ride the gelding along vigorously to obtain a position in keeping with his instructions, and that after travelling some 200m. was unable to restrain GOLD DREDGE to take up a position behind the leaders so he elected to allow the horse to lead.
Stewards accepted the explanations provided by G. Ryan, M. Lister and S. Seamer, however all parties were advised that stewards did have some reservations about the origin of the substantial support for GOLD DREDGE on 5 February.
