RACE 1: ROTARY DISTRICT 9600 H'CAP - 1350M.
ANNABELLE'S PRIDE was slow to begin.
TYLER pulled hard approaching the first tunr and was obliged to shift out off the heels of BELLA DANIKA.
Inside the 200m., ANNABELLE'S PRIDE was disappointed for a run between SERINSK and NARANGHI LASS.
RACE 2: ROTARY DISTRICT 9630 ENTIRES AND GELDINGS CLASS 6 H'CAP - 1350M.
BISTRO MONEY was a late withdrawal at 11.50 a.m. when that horse could not be presented on course in time to race.
When SOLAR RANCH broke down at the 800m., BIG GEOFFREY, which was trailing, had to be severely checked. RED INTRO shifted out abruptly in an endeavour to avoid BIG GEOFFREY, however clipped the heels of that gelding and almost fell. RED INTRO soon afterwards collided with the hind quarters of SOLAR RANCH and lost considerable ground. CHARAME and SWIFT KNIGHT were also forced extremely wide to avoid the aforementioned incident. SOLAR RANCH, which sustained injuries to the near fore fetlock joint, was euthanased on humane grounds.
At the 500m., OUR BANKER and CELESTIAL SPRINTER made contact as OUR BANKER attempted to shift out to improve.
A veterinary examination of RED INTRO failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 3: ROTARY INTERNATIONAL H'CAP - 1010M.
At the 500m., CHEEKY SPY had to be checked when attempting to improve to the outside of LE CHEVAL and inside MANNDO where there was insufficient room.
The track rating was upgraded to good following this event.
RACE 4: PAUL HARRIS H'CAP - 1200M.
WINE CLUB was slow to begin.
DANCING LIMO attempted to buck for several strides soon after the start. This was drawn to the attention of trainer T. Hall, who was advised that a warning was being placed on the gelding..
A. Baker, rider of JEDI KNIGHT, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1100m. he permitted his mount to shift in at a stage when not clear of JESTICA, resulting in JESTICA being taken in abruptly across the running of ATTACKER, which was checked, and further resulting in GET OVER IT being hampered when cramped for racing room. A. Baker was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 10 meetings, to commence at midnight, 7 March and to expire at midnight, 19 March 2000. COSMIC COMET and SPECTACULAR PRIDE, which were following, both had to be steadied as a result of the interference.
ATTACKER raced greenly in the run to the first turn. LORD HOBBITT, which was trailing, shifted out off the heels of that horse and made contact with COSMIC COMET, forcing that horse wider on the track.
LORD HOBITT continued to race greenly and made the home turn wide.
SPECTACULAR PRIDE also made the first turn awkwardly whilst racing greenly.
RACE 5: HOYLAND MEDICAL SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1110M.
YOMBE jumped inwards at the start, resulting in BEAUTY KINGDOM and CALL ME NANCY both being severely crowded.
M. Lister reported that CYGRET slipped at the start.
At the 600m., CITICHY shifted in momentarily which placed JASON'S STAR and KING CAL in restricted room.
When questioned, C. Maund stated although SNOW CHARIOT began well, he realised soon after the start that had he pressed forward in an attempt to ride the filly for speed he would have been caught extremely wide, therefore he attempted to ease and take a position closer to the fence. He added that the filly actually dropped the bit and settled further back in the field then he intende
RACE 6: AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH RESEARCH FUND H'CAP - 1200M.
When the pace slackened inside the 1000m., CANGAZE had to be restrained off the heels of RIVER REACH. As a consequence the horse shifted in, tightening FOREIGN MINISTER on to the running rail. GALLOPER GILES and ROCKY HORROR, which were trailing, were checked as a consequence.
LIAM LAD also had to be restrained off the leader MERRY DANCER on the first turn due to the slackening of the pace.
Leaving the 300m., LIAM LAD brushed RIVER REACH when shifting out to obtain clear running.
RACE 7: SOLVE COMMUNICATIONS H'CAP - 1615M.
Trainer S. Kendrick was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for SENO HALL by the prescribed time.
RACE 8: ROTARY FOUNDATION H'CAP - 2020M.
As N. Day became indisposed after fulfilling riding engagements at the Gold Coast, K. Smith was substituted as the rider of ANOTHER OFFCUT.
On the home turn, JULAGO struck the heels of LORDNOR (M. Privato) which at that stage shifted in slightly. Stewards issued M. Privato with a reprimand taking into account the contribution of the tiring ANOTHER OFFCUT which at that stage obliged BUGATTI to shift out, thereby accentuating the tightening to JULAGO.
Rounding the home turn, both WHAT A MESS and JACK'S ARRIVAL were held up and unable to improve.
ARCHIDAMIA was also held up rounding the home turn and was subsequently obliged to shift ground abruptly away from the heels of JULAGO when that horse struck interference at the 400m..
JACK'S ARRIVAL had difficulty obtaining clear running until after passing the 100m..
When questioned, S. Katsidis was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of BUGATTI. Trainer A. Doyle advised that BUGATTI'S work had been excellent leading into today's event and that he was at a loss to explain why the horse performed so poorly. Mr Doyle however observed that BUGATTI was quite agitated in the barriers which he advised was uncharacteristic for the horse. A swab sample was taken from BUGATTI following a veterinary examination which failed to reveal any abnormality.
ALL WINNERS AND BUGATTI WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
