BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 13.05.00

WEATHER – FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - OUT 7M ALL TRACK


RACE 1: FOSTER’S LIGHT ICE SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1030M

SNAP DANCER and PROVINCE were slow to begin.

UNDERCOVER BROTHER shifted in soon after the start inconveniencing BRAVE HAWK.

At the 700m HAWAIIAN CALL lost ground when momentarily tightened for room by ARAKOOLA which at that stage was crossing to the lead. A Morrison, the rider of ARAKOOLA, was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

FLYING TAAN was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on BRAVE HAWK, G Colless stated that from the wide alley instructions were to ride the colt off the pace as there were concerns that the horse might hang out if caught wide without cover. He added that BRAVE HAWK’s trait to hang out in races was the reason for today’s tactics and it was hoped that he would be able to find a position inside other runners. G Colless further stated that this did not occur and indeed the colt was inclined to lay out in the middle stages to a minor degree, however finished the race off well.


RACE 2: HOT ICE SCOMELD SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M

TOBIANA jumped in at the start resulting in SALAAMA, which had been slow to begin, being hampered.

SUZY GREY also jumped inwards at the start inconveniencing SHANKADI and STYLISH EYES.

When questioned, S Seamer stated that he was at a complete loss to explain the poor performance of FOSCAT. S Seamer explained that after being a little slow to begin, he crossed over in an endeavour to take up a position close to the fence from his wide alley and that the filly initially travelled quite well on to the first turn, however upon reaching the 600m FOSCAT actually commenced to lose ground despite being hard ridden. Trainer R Heathcote was similarly mystified by FOSCAT’s performance and undertook to provide stewards with the results of blood tests he intended to have carried out on the filly on Monday. A veterinary examination of FOSCAT subsequent to the event failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.


RACE 3: VICTORIA BITTER H'CAP - 1350M

CORNWALL BAY and AMORIST were both a little slow to begin.

At the 500m BELLO SIGNOR shifted out off the heels of TOPIYM, forcing ELITE MACHINE and ANNALEA wider on the track. B Prebble, the rider of BELLO SIGNOR, was cautioned in relation to this incident.

RACE 4: HAMILTON HOTEL DOOMBEN BRACELET SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 2040M

P Cuddihy, who was indisposed due to wasting, was replaced on OUR SARI by D Craven.

BLESSED TYCOON was slow to begin.

At the 600m ASDAAM shifted out making contact with SEA MIRAGE and forcing that horse wider on the track.
An inquiry into a fall sustained by MYSTIC LADY (C Reith) was adjourned after taking evidence from M Cahill (AVILDE), G Boss (KENA), J Byrne (SOPHIE’S GOLD), J Taylor (ASDAAM) and S Katsidis (SEA MIRAGE). When MYSTIC LADY fell, ZACUSHLA and MISS CORTONA were hampered and ADJOURN, BLESSED TYCOON, OUR ANGEL and POLAR PRINCESS all met with severe interference.

RACE 5: CARLTON MIDSTRENGTH CHAIRMAN’S H'CAP - 2040M

FIGUREHEAD blundered badly at the start. When questioned, D Walsh stated as a consequence of losing ground at the start and with there being a genuine early speed from the outset, he allowed FIGUREHEAD to settle where comfortable and was loath to bustle the gelding with his top weight. He added that when the race developed into a sprint home from the 600m, FIGUREHEAD was left flat-footed and unable to respond to his hard riding. A veterinary examination of FIGUREHEAD failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.

Upon entering the straight, KAZAKH BELLE shifted out and bumped REPUTED GROOM. KAZAKH BELLE and REPUTED GROOM again came together on two further occasions in the early part of the straight.

D Walsh, the rider of the 6th placegetter FIGUREHEAD, was reprimanded for failing to weigh in.

RACE 6: CROWN LAGER DOOMBEN CLASSIC SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1640M

LET’S CRUISE and TELESIO was slow to begin.

A short distance after the start VALUATE shifted out inconveniencing PLAY STATION.

On the 1400m turn MR. ESTEEM had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by VALUATE which shifted in. M Cahill, the rider of VALUATE, was cautioned.


LET’S CRUISE brushed THE GOLDEN DANE on the home turn when shifting out to improve.

Passing the 200m TELESIO was obliged to shift out abruptly off the heels of VALUATE which was also shifting ground outwards whilst tiring. As a consequence, TELESIO made contact with LORD ALANNON.

BEAR RAID and FRONT ROW came into contact nearing the 100m.

RACE 7: CARLTON CUP - 1200M

Passing the 1000m KIWI HERO had to be steadied off the heels of MR. INNOCENT which shifted in. MR. INNOCENT in turn made contact with COMMANDS which was overracing at the heels of ALPINE EXPRESS.

Soon after straightening COMMANDS and MR. INNOCENT made contact as COMMANDS attempted to shift out around the heels of ALPINE EXPRESS. After being prevented from doing so, COMMANDS was then held up for some distance behind ALPINE EXPRESS as that horse tired.

BLACK BEAN was unable to obtain clear running at any stage in the straight.

VARINO became unbalanced at the 250m when contacted on the hind quarters by STAGING which shifted out to gain clear running.

RACE 8: RACECOURSE ROAD BAR H'CAP - 1200M

As C Reith was indisposed, S Galloway was substituted as the rider of RIVER REACH.

BEAU JOE was slow to begin.

CENTRE FORCE jumped away awkwardly and shifted in and made contact with LIAM LAD.

At the entrance to the straight MAJOR had to be checked off the heels of LIAM LAD and then shifted in and again had to be checked off the heels of CENTRE FORCE.

When attempting a run between LANDSIGHTING and CENTRE FORCE approaching the 100m, MAJOR threw its head up when accidentally struck across the head by the whip of C Munce (CENTRE FORCE). MAJOR was then most reluctant to take advantage of the run for some distance.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that BEAU JOE had blood in its mouth as a result of a lacerated gum.

ALL WINNERS, FOSCAT AND FIGUREHEAD WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
