WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 2M. ALL TRACK

RACE 1: SOUTHCORP WINES H'CAP - 1110M.

After proving difficult to load, GULLCATCHER broke through the front gates prior to the start being effected, dislodging its rider, M. Cahill. GULLCTACHER, which galloped for some distance, was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 11.59 a.m.. On the announcement of correct weight, all monies invested on GULLCATCHER were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 17 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 15 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. Trainer J. Thomas was advised that GULLCATCHER must pass a further barrier test prior to its next race start.

TERJULE and YES DOES were both slow to begin.

SILVER CANNON jumped inwards at the start, inconveniencing BROCARD.

Leaving the 800m., INSTANT OMEN was inconvenienced when cramped for room by CRYPTIC RED.

JUST AWE commenced to hang out from the 600m. and subsequently shifted ground on the home turn, hampering SILVER CANNON. A veterinary examination of JUST AWE, which compounded badly in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality. Stable representative Mr S. Christie, was advised that in light of today's performance, JUST AWE would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start. A swab sample was taken from JUST AWE.

Over the final 75m., INSTANT OMEN lost momentum when disappointed for a run to the inside of ARAKOOLA. Whilst it was established that ARAKOOLA had initially commenced to shift back in of its own accord, G. Duffy was nevertheless reprimanded for allowing his mount THREATNER to subsequently shift in, contacting ARAKOOLA, thereby forcing that horse in towards the rail.

RACE 2: CLIK ON TEN H'CAP - 1615M.

ALMIGHTY STEP and IN COBARGO were both slow to begin.

After racing ungenerously rounding the first turn, IN COBARGO continued to overrace in the middle stages.

Approaching the 600m., JOSH shifted away from the running rail and in so doing made contact with BELLE PAREZ, which raced to its outside. As a consequence of this contact, JOSH was then inclined to lay back in despite the efforts of its rider, J. Taylor, resulting in CAPE SCHANCK, which had improved quickly to the inside of its heels, being checked.

RACE 3: POLYAM H'CAP - 1200M.

GLORY BOUND jumped away very awkwardly with its head in the air and lost ground.

When cramped to a minor degree by RUSSIAN KNIGHT at the 700m., JUST KISTA overreacted and lost ground.

When questioned, M. Cahill stated that, as instructed, he rode ARAKAI quietly from its awkward alley, however the gelding proved most disappointing with its failure to run on over the concluding stages. He was unable to provide an explanation for the gelding's performance. A veterinary examination of ARAKAI subsequent to the event failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 4: GIANNI RESTAURANT STARLET SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1010M.

NEWBOLD ROYALE jumped very awkwardly and shifted out, making heavy contact with KIMBARETTE.

WENT THE TROLLEY was slow to begin.

On the first turn, FARCEUR shifted in of its own accord, struck the heels of HOT CHAR and blundered.

INTRODUCE and SOLEMNITY were obliged to race wide in the middle stages.

WENT THE TROLLEY raced greenly and was inclined to hang out during the event. A veterinary examination of WENT THE TROLLEY following the race revealed the filly to have sustained lacerations to both sides of the mouth.

When struck with the whip at the 250m., SOLEMNITY ducked in abruptly, hampering HOT CHAR.

SOLEMNITY again shifted in when struck with the whip near the 100m..

HOT CHAR, which was eased down by its rider in the straight, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon who reported that the filly was shin sore in both forelegs, especially the off fore.

At the request of trainer P. McLeod, NEWBOLD ROYALE was examined by the veterinary surgeon some time after the event and it was detected that the filly had an elevated temperature.

RACE 5: EXCEL EXHIBITIONS H'CAP - 1110M.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SNAPPY GIFT, M. Rodd indicated that the filly travelled quite well during the event, however after being contacted by WALL'S GIFT on the home turn, the filly lost concentration and from that stage failed to run on. A veterinary examination of SNAPPY GIFT failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer B. Guy undertook to advise stewards of anything that may come to his attention in the days following the race that may have had some bearing on the horse's disappointing run.

When questioned regarding the improved performance displayed by ZOOFEAR in winning today' event, stable representative Mr P. Dawson indicated that in the mare's initial 2 starts for the stable on 22 September and 6 October, ZOOFEAR had tended to overrace with blinkers, which resulted in her tiring in the straight. He indicated that as a consequence, the blinkers had been removed from ZOOFEAR for today's race and he attributed her improved performance to this change of gear.

RACE 6: THE COURIER MAIL H'CAP - 1200M.

ARGENTINA was slow to begin.

When being steadied off the heels of KULNURA, which shifted in when not quite clear, DARK BRANDY began to overrace and as a consequence shifted out on the first turn, resulting in DAAM LUCKY being checked when tightened on to ANIMATE. Whilst stewards accepted that DARK BRANDY had contributed to the incident by refusing to settle, J. Stanley, rider of KULNURA, was nevertheless reprimanded for failing to initially provide that runner with the mandatory 2 lengths clearance. When DAAM LUCKY lost ground, ARGENTINA shifted out to avoid that horse, forcing VAIN HALO wider on the track. ARGENTINA and VAIN HALO were then obliged to race wide throughout the middle stages.

S. Katsidis, rider of TALBINGO LAD, accidentally dropped his whip at the 50m..

A veterinary examination of ARGENTINA, which compounded in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 7:LORD MAYOR'S CUP - 2020M.

For some distance approaching the 1400m., DRUTHER'S OPTION had to be restrained off the heels of COUNT SCENARIO.

Between the 600m. and 400m, LORDNOR was held up and unable to improve.

RACE 8: CARLTON DRAUGHT H'CAP - 1615M.

Stewards permitted the late withdrawal of IN THE GIDGEE at 8 a.m.. Trainer D. Newham was fined the sum of $100 for failing to withdraw that gelding by the prescribed time.

KIWI WARRIOR was slow to begin.

When racing ungenerously at the 1200m., KIWI WARRIOR shifted in and bumped heavily with SCRIBBLY GUM, which in turn contacted the hind quarters of DELIGHTFULLY.

G. Geran, rider of AULD HAT, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that at the 250m. he permitted his mount to shift in under hard riding, resulting in VACEN LEE, which at that stage had obtained a run between AULD HAT and KIWI WARRIOR, being checked. As a consequence, VACEN LEE was obliged to shift out around AULD HAT to obtain clear running. G. Geran from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight 6 November, and to expire at midnight, 17 November 2001.

Apprentice K. Yoshida, in the presence of trainer R. Macrae, was questioned in relation to his ride on KIWI WARRIOR. K. Yoshida stated that he had been instructed to ride KIWI WARRIOR quietly, however after being slowly away he slapped the gelding down the shoulder to make up lost ground in the run to the first turn. He added that KIWI WARRIROR commenced to race fiercely and shifted out on the first turn, despite his efforts, forcing BRITANNICUS wider on the track. He stated further that when caught 4 wide at the 1200m. he allowed the gelding to move forward as it continued to overrace. When further questioned as to why he did not steady his mount and take up a position outside of JACK LIVES HERE at the 800m. rather than allow his mount to race one length in advance of that horse, he indicated that he had attempted to do so however he was unable to satisfactorily restrain the horse. Trainer R. Macrae indicated that KIWI WARRIOR had on other occasions tended to overrace with senior riders, and on those occasion the horse had failed to run on, as was the case today. Mr Macrae agreed that in future he may have to refrain from using an apprentice jockey on KIWI WARRIOR until the horse's racing manners improve. Mr Macrae also suggested that the gelding's unruly performance today could be explained by the fact that the horse was still relatively fresh for today's 1600m. assignment even though he had increased the horse's workload since its first up run over 1200m.. No action was taken as stewards deemed that K. Yoshida was, in their opinion, a victim of circumstances.
