_________________________

GENERAL: As S. Katsidis, Z. Purton and A. Morrison were indisposed, the following riding changes were approved:

S. Katsidis: Race 2. CREATIONS - M. Rodd; Race 3. CINNAMON COVE - S. Thurlow; Race 6. GALADRIEL - M. Gatt; Race 7. VERSTAK - S. King; Race 8. MIGHT AND GOLD - G. Lynch.

Z. Purton: Race 1. FEED THE METER - D. Oliver; Race 2. RAISE YOUR BID - B. Prebble; Race 4. MISS MARTINDALE - B. Prebble; Race 5. BRIGHTER SCENE - M. Rodd; Race 6. MAGIQUE SKY - D. Tanti.

A. Morrison: Race 4. COINCIDENCE - A. Kennedy; Race 8. TURF KING - A. Kennedy.

RACE 1: GIFT OF LIFE - BLOOD SERVICE H'CAP - 2100M.

As no other apprentice jockey was available, senior rider D. Tanti was permitted to substitute for apprentice M. McDonald on MORINGA'S MONARCH. Stewards accepted M. McDonald's reason for being late on course.

ROMANZA was very slow to begin. Trainer B. Miller was advised that a warning was being placed on ROMANZA, which in recent starts had failed to jump on terms with the field.

After travelling a short distance, SAILOR'S LARK lost ground when tightened for room by RULENZA ROAD. RULENZA ROAD continued to shift in in the run to the first turn, causing HANCOCK to be steadied. Whilst stewards acknowledged that RULENZA ROAD had a tendency to lay in, A. Merritt, rider of that gelding, was reprimanded for failing to make greater effort to prevent RULENZA ROAD shifting in in both incidents.

Passing the 600m., SAILOR'S LARK and CHAMPION OF DANES made contact.

At the 300m., MORINGA'S MONARCH was inconvenienced by HANCOCK, which shifted out around the heels of RULENZA ROAD to obtain clear running.

A veterinary examination of CHAMPION OF DANES, which weakened badly in the straight, revealed that gelding to be suffering from heart arythmia. Trainer B. McLachlan was advised that CHAMPION OF DANES must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards, and the results of an ECG will be required prior to CHAMPION OF DANES racing again.

RACE 2: AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS H'CAP - 1640M.

Throughout the middle stages, POKING AROUND and BRASSED both pulled extremely hard due to the lack of pace.

When questioned, J. Taylor stated that WANDANE settled well outside the leader in a very slowly run event, however when the pace quickened from the 700m., the filly failed to respond and compounded very badly over the concluding stages. Trainer H. Williams indicated that WANDANE had been withdrawn form its engagement last Saturday due to a slight abnormality with the filly's blood count, however the connections were satisfied due to 3 subsequent normal blood tests that WANDANE was fit to meet its engagement. He added that this belief was reinforced by the filly's good work leading into today's event. Mr Williams was unable to provide any further explanation for the horse's performance and undertook to report to stewards if any abnormality became apparent in the days subsequent to today's event. A swab sample was taken from WANDANE following a veterinary examination which failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 3: ALLAN CAMPBELL MEMORIAL H'CAP - 1200M.

At the 1100m., KILBRANNAN had to be steadied to avoid the heels of IRON ORE, which was taken in by HOO HAA.

SCORSESE and ASPEN VALLEY were both obliged to race wide during the event.

RACE 4: TRAUMA TEDDY H'CAP - 1030M.

Stewards permitted the late withdrawal of FLAMING PRINCE at 8.10 a.m. on veterinary advice.

M. Gatt, rider of JUST AWE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift in on the first turn near the 800m. at a stage when not clear of COINCIDENCE, resulting in COINCIDENCE being checked when tightened on to the hind quarters of MOOKATAN. M. Gatt was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 11 May, and to expire at midnight, 20 May 2002. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account M. Gatt's good recent race riding record, and also that he had recently returned to race riding following an injury.

When WINNING BLIND shifted out to obtain clear running passing the 200m., that horse brushed MISS MARTINDALE.

BIGGE ISLE blundered in the going at the 150m..

Over the concluding stages, BIGGE ISLE was inclined to race greenly.

JUST AWE and MISS THUNDERSTOOD were both forced to race wide during the event.

RACE 5: HUMANITARIAN LABOUR DAY CUP - 2040M.

When questioned regarding MAYTHEHORSEBEWITHU'S disappointing performance, J. Patton stated that the gelding usually races best when able to find cover in its races. He added that the pattern of the race, which developed into a sprint home, did not suit the gelding which tended to pull when racing outside the leader, BRIGHTER SCENE. A veterinary examination of MAYTHEHORSEBEWITHU, which weakened in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 6: HENRY DUNANT DOOMBEN BRACELET SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 2040M.

After being loaded, LILY'S CONFOY became extremely fractious in the barriers and became cast. Subsequently, acting on the advice of the club's veterinary surgeon, LILY'S CONFOY was withdrawn at 3.30 p.m.. All monies invested on LILY'S CONFOY were ordered to be refunded, with no alteration to betting. GALADRIEL, which was drawn in the adjoining stall to LILY'S CONFOY, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Trainer J. Wallace was advised that LILY'S CONFOY must pass an official barrier trial prior to its next race start.

PALIDAMAH began awkwardly.

Passing the 700m., WAITAWHERO GOLD and GALADRIEL were momentarily tightened for room inside TELL SOMEONE.

When questioned, S. King stated that I'M IN HEAVEN travelled well into the race approaching the home turn, however when placed under pressure, the filly dipped in the going on several occasions and failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. A veterinary examination of I'M IN HEAVEN failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from I'M IN HEAVEN.

RACE 7: AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS CHAMPAGNE CLASSIC SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES - 1200M.

On jumping away, YELL blundered and shifted in, inconveniencing VERSTAK.

DANROAD jumped inwards at the start, making contact with MAJESTIC THRILL and resulting in that horse losing ground.

DANROAD was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.

RACE 8: THE GENEVA H'CAP - 1350M.

PICHOLINE was forced wide in the middle stages.

Upon straightening, MAJOR VICTORY had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between the tiring CHENAR and THE KILDARE KID, which shifted in slightly to obtain clear running. M. Gatt, rider of THE KILDARE KID, was urged to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

BELLO SIGNOR was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

Trainer R. Heathcote with apprentice jockey T. Ikenushi were questioned regarding the tactics adopted today on CHENAR. Mr Heathcote stated that he had instructed apprentice Ikenushi to press forward on CHENAR to lead, and whilst the mare had not raced in a forward position at its 2 most recent starts, it had been the intent of connections for CHENAR to race forward, however circumstances did not permit those instructions to be carried out. Whilst no action was taken, trainer R. Heathcote was reminded of his obligations to advise stewards of any variance in tactics.

ALL WINNERS, WANDANE AND I'M IN HEAVEN WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
