At the 1100m CONSORTIUM had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DEVIL which shifted in. S. Campton, the rider of DEVIL, was severely reprimanded for failing to provide sufficient clearance. At the same stage, SILVER PAGE shifted in resulting in BAGOLINO being taken in on to KING SHALFORD, causing that horse to be hampered. M. Carson, the rider of SILVER PAGE, was also reprimanded and urged to exercise more care when shifting ground.

When the pace slackened after passing the 1000m, TAHITIAN STAR, YOGI'S EDITION, POTESTAS, KING SHALFORD and ROW BOAT all had to be restrained by their respective riders.

KING SHALFORD continued to race fiercely through the middle stages of the event.
