BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT.22.3.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S. Railton (Chairman), Mr A. Reardon, Mr P. Gillard, Mr W. Flynn, Mr C. Waller (Cadet).

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - DEAD RAIL - 6.5 ALL TRACK

RACE 1: PETER WRIGHT H'CAP - 1200M.

ENA'S TREASURE, which was restless in the barriers, jumped away awkwardly.

When the pace slackened at the 700m., TWIN FORTUNE had to be restrained off the heels of VIVID MISS.

In the early stages of the straight, EIMEO BAY was held up behind MOUNTAIN MIST.

For some distance in the straight, PLAY MISTRESS was impeded by the tiring CANADIAN COURTING, which shifted out under pressure. D. Evans, rider of CANADIAN COURTING, was urged to make more effort to keep his mounts on a true course in similar circumstances.

JANNEKE and CITY EXPRESS were both caught wide during the event.

RACE 2: 800 WHOLESALE QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M.

BABE OF THE YEAR shifted in at the start, taking HIALEAH STAR in on to GELZINNIS.

On the home turn, FLYING ALICE, which had an inclination to lay in, had to be steadied off the heels of BABE OF THE YEAR, which at that stage shifted out around the heels of STAR CLANG to improve.

For some distance after passing the 300m., SIMPLE VIV was held up behind the tiring MR AVALANCHE.

Passing the 200m., PROTOTYPE was hampered by YO KIDOKI, which shifted out.

Over the final 100m., FLYING ACE was unable to be tested when racing in restricted room between PROTOTYPE and STAR CLANG.

Apprentice A. Best, rider of YO KIDOKI, was questioned regarding his tactics on the home turn where he relinquished his position on the fence inside of MY AVALANCHE. He indicated that he was attempting to comply with the instructions of trainer B. Guy by ensuring that YO KIDOKI was brought to the outside of runners for its finishing effort as it was felt that the horse performed better when ridden in such a manner. Trainer B Guy confirmed that he had issued instructions of this nature and in doing so, had not expected the gelding to obtain a position on the fence from its awkward alley. Whilst stewards accepted A. Best's advice, however from a safety aspect, he was cautioned for angling his mount around the heels of MR AVALANCHE prematurely, which resulted in YO KIDOKI touching the heels of MR AVALANCHE.

RACE 3: BUDGET CAR & TRUCK RENTAL H'CAP - 1640M.

When initially placed under pressure approaching the 200m., BUNDALEER shifted out and made contact with HEY BANJO. BUNDALEER continued to shift out under pressure in the straight. G. Baker, rider of BUNDALEER, was urged to make more effort to keep his mounts on a true course.

GO SANDY was held up for a short distance after passing the 200m..

RACE 4: SALTERS LIFESTYLE CAR CENTRE H'CAP - 1200M.

Soon after the start, BREEZE PAST was hampered when cramped for room by KATENIAN, which was taken in by PUKEKO, which after initially shifting in of its own accord, was taken in further by FRENCH GENTLEMAN. J. Byrne, rider of FRENCH GENTLEMEN, was reprimanded.

When the pace slackened near the 600m., MAKIN' TRACKS, which was racing keenly, improved up inside the heels of FRENCH GENTLEMAN where there was insufficient room, resulting in DON'T MUKAROUND, which was racing on its inside, being tightened on to the rail. When MAKIN' TRACKS was checked by its rider, GRAMERCY, which was following, also had to be checked.

G. Baker, rider of ICE PATROL, accidentally dropped his whip near the 200m..

The club's veterinary surgeon reported that FRENCH GENTLEMAN had sustained a laceration to the front of the outside hind cannon.

RACE 5: CHANDLERS H'CAP - 2200M.

At the 900m., LITTLE KATERI became very awkward at the heels of MIDNIGHT DEAL, which shifted out from behind DEERHILL after that horse had assumed the lead. K. Yoshida, rider of MIDNIGHT DEAL, was cautioned for failing to be sufficiently clear of LITTLE KATERI at the time of this incident.

RACE 6: TRILBY MISSO PAUL CARTER QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1640M.

Trainer R. Dawson was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for FRENCH LA REV by the required time.

HI KEA hung in over the concluding stages.

C. Reith was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted on LUNAR FLAME in this event. He stated that he had strict instructions to ride the gelding up on the pace, however after being slow into stride, LUNAR FLAME eventually gathered momentum which allowed him to improve his position after the field had entered the back straight and settle the gelding at the girth of the leader, Sir Dan. Trainer R. Kirwan confirmed he had instructed C. Reith to ride LUNAR FLAME in such a fashion. He indicated that during its last preparation the gelding had been placed over 1800m. at the Gold Coast when ridden on the pace, and that it was the intention of connections to ride the horse similarly in future.

RACE 7: TRIPLE M/GUINNESS H'CAP - 1110M.

JANADI jumped inwards at the start, making contact with GRAND ESTIME. As a consequence of contact on its hind quarters, JANADI continued to lay in, resulting in GRAND ESTIME, DISTINCTLY and DIFFICULT all being crowded.

When questioned regarding the performance of LORD KARIOI, which compounded badly in the latter stages of the race, S. Seamer stated that whilst it was his intention to lead on the gelding, he was unable to do so. He added that from the 600m., LORD KARIOI gave ground and failed to respond to his riding. A veterinary examination of LORD KARIOI failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.

RACE 8: CITY MITSUBISHI H'CAP - 1350M.

Trainer L. Birchley was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for DANEGOLD by the prescribed time.

B. Stewart, who became indisposed after riding DEERHILL in race 5,was replaced on SADDLE BOY by N. Evans.

SEAFRONT jumped inwards at the start, tightening SPECTACULAR GUY on to the hind quarters of ZUCCARO.

TOUGH SWORD tended to overrace approaching the first turn.

SEAFRONT was obliged to race wide during the event.

Over the concluding stages, J. Byrne, rider of the 3rd placegetter, PLANET LOVER, had difficulty in being able to fully test his mount due to its inclination to hang out under pressure.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on CATECHISM between the 500m. and the entrance to the straight, B. Albuino stated that approaching the turn he elected to maintain his position behind ENTITY as he felt that if he had improved around that gelding it would have shifted out, forcing him extremely wide. Stewards advised B Albuino that whilst his explanation was understandable, in the circumstances which had prevailed, he had probably erred to some degree by failing to improve his position at a crucial stage of the event.

ALL WINNERS, SIMPLY VIV AND LORD KARIOI WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
