MR. CENTREFOLD and FLASH VALENTINE were tightened shortly after the start between HOW HIGH SIR and LINCOLN ROAD when both horses shifted ground.
Stewards questioned M. Rice and trainer D. Newham in relation to HOW HIGH SIR racing closer to the leaders than anticipated. Ms Newham explained that the horse had previously been racing over 1000m whereby the horse did not have the speed due to the fast pace early in those races. She stated that with the increase in distance to 1200m the horse was able to take advantage of its barrier draw and race a little more prominent; however, in hindsight she was of the view that the horse may be suspect at 1200m as it had been disappointing over that distance previously. Trainer D. Newham indicated that in her opinion HOW HIGH SIR may have come to the end of its preparation and she would recommend that the horse be spelled.

Pope stated that the horse hung out badly throughout running and trainer M. Mair was at a loss to explain the poor performance other than that the horse may have got its tongue over the bit. Trainer M. Mair was instructed to trial STAR GROOM to the satisfaction of the stewards before the horse races again. The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that STAR GROOM was galloped on behind the off hock and also suffered a laceration to the tongue.

Best, the rider of STAR OF TELESTO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that approaching the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of POWER SURGE and JARABU, resulting in TAKE STRIKE having to be checked.
