BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 07.02.04

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon (Chairman), Mr J. Hackett, Mr D. Tapsall, Mr P. Gillard, Mr C. Harris (Cadet)

WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD RAIL – OUT 1M

RACE 1: MAL MICHAEL H'CAP – 1615M

TYCOON JESTER was slow to begin.

Passing the 1000m, when being restrained off the heels of MOVING, TOP MARC was inclined to race ungenerously.

Near the 100m MOVING had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DANEFULL which shifted in under pressure.

Near the 50m G. Colless had to stop riding TOP MARC when JUMATTY shifted in slightly. GARLAND PRINCE, which was following, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of TOP MARC.

RACE 2: JONATHON BROWN QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M

On return to scale a protest was lodged by S. Seamer, the rider of the 2nd placegetter ADMIRAL SPY, against MISS CAROLION (A. Kennedy) being declared the winner, alleging interference shortly after the start. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the official video, stewards dismissed the objection when they found that the interference suffered by ADMIRAL SPY came from ELITE GENERAL which shifted out, taking ADMIRAL SPY out on to ANLEZARK which made contact with the hind quarters of MISS CAROLION which then shifted in after jumping awkwardly. S. Seamer was found guilty under AR. 165(3) of lodging a frivolous protest and was fined $200.

Approaching the first turn POLAR WOLF was inclined to race ungenerously. TAISHO, which was following, had to be restrained to avoid the heels of POLAR WOLF.

A veterinary examination of ANLEZARK following the event failed to reveal any abnormality.

Trainer R. Heathcote reported that ELITE GENERAL was distressed after competing in this event. The Club's veterinary surgeon reported subsequently that ELITE GENERAL was suffering from heat exhaustion. Mr Heathcote further advised that ELITE GENERAL would be sent for an immediate spell.

RACE 3: JUSTIN LEPPITSCH H'CAP – 2020M

The start was delayed when MOROCCAN BOY, which had shied away from the barriers and dislodged its rider A. Kennedy, had to be examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon. Following examination, MOROCCAN BOY was passed fit to run.

A false start was declared when the barrier gates opened prior to the start being effected. After being restrained, all horses were vetted and passed fit to run.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that IT'S SIMPLE bled from both nostrils. IT'S SIMPLE will incur a three-month bar from racing. A swab sample was taken from IT'S SIMPLE.

RACE 4: CARLTON MIDSTRENGTH H'CAP – 1110M

DEFEND was obliged to race wide throughout the event.

RACE 5: THE BMD GROUP QRSE H'CAP – 1350M

As apprentice A. Best was dually engaged for CHIQUITITA and SKI THE TIDE, he was replaced on SKI THE TIDE by M. Carson as there was no other apprentice available. A. Best was fined the sum of $200.

HOODED GEM, which was found to be lame in the off hind leg, was a late scratching at 2 p.m. acting on veterinary advice.

ACE CLUB was slow to begin.

Passing the 1200m TELE SERIES had to be steadied when tightened for room by ALL IN AWE which shifted in. J. Cook, the rider of ALL IN AWE, was cautioned.

CHIQUITITA race wide throughout.

CHA CHA D'AMOUR was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

A. Kennedy was questioned as to his riding of GRAND SEMI from the 200m to the winning post. He stated that after being held up in the early stages of the straight he elected to improve his position to the inside of ALL IN AWE, however from the 200m until close to the finishing line no run presented itself. Whilst A. Kennedy was given the benefit of the doubt in relation to his riding over the concluding stages, stewards expressed concerns that he had not shown the same degree of vigour as he had shown in the early stages of the straight.

RACE 6: GOLDEN CIRCLE QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M

VICTORY GROVE was very slow to begin.

M. Carson reported that approaching the first turn, after being tightened for room by HOOT'S VIEW, his mount was reluctant to hold its position and as a result had to be checked. SPINARDO, which was following, had to be checked as a consequence. It was established that at this point, after racing tight to the inside of DODGING, QUEEN CALLOW shifted in despite the efforts of its rider J. Stanley, tightening the running of HOOT'S VIEW and NATURAL WOMAN.

DODGING, which was obliged to race wide throughout, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported that he could find no abnormalities. A swab sample was taken from DODGING.

SWEETPICK was also obliged to race wide throughout.

In the early stages of the straight SOUTHBROOK KID was held up for clear running behind NATURAL WOMAN.

Trainer J. Dorrington was questioned as to the improved performance of SPINARDO compared with its unplaced effort at the Gold Coast on 24 January in a Class 1 event. She stated that whilst the gelding had been ridden forward in that event and had reached the lead in the early stages of the straight, it compounded over the concluding stages and believed, on the advice of jockey M. Dorrington, that the horse may have got its tongue over the bit and as a result she added a tongue tie for today's event. Jockey M. Dorrington stated that it was not his intention to take a forward position on the gelding at the Gold Coast on the 24th, but after beginning well from an outside barrier he was allowed to race behind the leader without making significant use of the horse, however confirmed that the horse tired noticeably in the straight which in his opinion was attributable to it getting its tongue over the bit. He added that in today's race the gelding slipped on jumping away which resulted in it getting back further than expected, however the horse travelled well throughout running. Their explanations were noted.

RACE 7: BRISBANE LIONS AFC H'CAP – 1010M

After leaving the 900m STICKS 'N' STONES had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ZOOFEAR which shifted in. Apprentice M. Rice, the rider of ZOOFEAR, was reprimanded and advised to be fully clear when shifting ground.

Approaching the 600m OUR FABIO shifted in and made heavy contact with GREY REGENT.

Making the home turn CLAY SHAKER shifted out to improve, resulting in CENTA'S GIFT being taken out on to the heels of PROMISING JOY.

Trainer G. Reid and jockey B. Stewart were questioned as to the tactics B. Stewart adopted on CLAY SHAKER in this event. Both Mr Reid and jockey Stewart indicated that there had not been any specific instructions given, however Mr Reid indicated that he had not expected CLAY SHAKER to be back near last after leaving the 800m. B. Stewart indicated that the gelding did not begin as well as he expected and he anticipated PROMISING JOY going forward and that he would endeavour to race outside that horse. However, PROMISING JOY was not able to match the speed of the horses drawn inside it and as a result he felt he would be racing wide for the entire event and therefore he elected to ease his mount and race nearer the rails. Their explanations were noted.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that SLIPSTREAM was galloped on behind the off hind fetlock.

RACE 8: JAMIE CHARMAN H'CAP – 1200M

B. Stewart, the rider of SCOTTISH REAVER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that approaching the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in, taking VISCAY STAR in on to NICEOSS which had to be checked. B. Stewart was suspended for a period of 9 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 8 February, and to expire at midnight on Wednesday, 25 February 2003.

G. Colless was questioned as to the disappointing performance of WINSOME DANCER. He stated that the mare was a little slow to begin and could not accelerate and as a result he was obliged to race three wide running to the first turn. He added that the mare was under pressure prior to the home turn and could not improve. Trainer K. Kemp will be interviewed in relation to the mare's performance.

ALL WINNERS, IT'S SIMPLE AND DODGING WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
