Race 1: 97.3 FM CLASS 6 H'CAP – 1030M
1st – Potter 2nd – Mr Sequential 3rd – Sonic Peak 4th – Equalos
As P. Hammersley had motor vehicle problems travelling to the racecourse, he was replaced on MR SEQUENTIAL by C. Spry.
MR SEQUENTIAL (C. Spry) was slow to jump.
MISTER DE BALI (T. Treichel) jumped in at the start and made contact with POTTER (S. Seamer).
RUSSIAN KNIGHT (M. Pelling) was caught four wide in the run to the first turn and raced three wide for the remainder of the event.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MISTER DE BALI, T. Treichel stated that the horse travelled reasonably well until the turn, however when asked for an effort and struck with the whip on straightening the horse was inclined to hang out. He added that in his opinion the horse was not suited by the prevailing track conditions and on pulling up he noticed that the horse had its tongue over the bit.
Race 2: NETWORK 10 3YO AND UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1640M
1st – Zauberei 2nd – A Fairy's Kiss 3rd – Moonshiner 4th – Frottage
MOONSHINER (D. Ballard) jumped out at the start, forcing BAY OF SECRETS (G. Palmer) to be tightened on to the hind quarters of FROTTAGE (M. Pelling).
LOPPER (S. Katsidis) jumped out at the start and brushed JUST JEDDAH (S. Seamer).
Near the 1400m BAY OF SECRETS commenced to overrace and when racing ungenerously shifted out making contact with ZAUBEREI (J. Byrne), forcing that horse to be checked across the heels of MOONSHINER. As a result of this incident, A FAIRY'S KISS (S. Galloway), which was racing to the outside of ZAUBEREI, had to be checked and LOPPER, which was racing behind ZAUBEREI, was also checked. The connections of BAY OF SECRETS will be advised that a warning will be placed against the horse.
LA BELLA MER cast its near hind plate during the event.
The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that JUST JEDDAH sustained a laceration to the off hind pastern.
Race 3: SOLOMONS QTIS 3YO CLASS 6 H'CAP – 1350M
1st – Son Of Dane 2nd – Admiral Spy 3rd – Star Of Asia 4th – Lara's Way
Stewards questioned D. Ballard regarding his riding tactics insofar as STAR OF ASIA leading today as compared to previous runs when the horse raced back in the field. D. Ballard stated that in the small field the horse jumped extremely well and whilst it had not been intended to lead on the horse, he was positioned outside the leader in the early stages and as a result of the slow pace and the rider on his inside placing his horse under restraint to gain a trail, he was left in front. He added that after assuming a position on the rails he slowed the pace even more in an effort to allow another runner to progress forward to assume the lead, however this did not eventuate and he was a victim of circumstances.
Race 4: NESTLE 1MW LY H'CAP – 1640M
1st – Promoted 2nd – Royal Dreamer 3rd – Warrior Trader 4th – Yogi's Edition
As D. Ballard was stood down by the Club's medical officer, he was replaced on QUESTWIN by G. McKeon.
Shortly after the start QUESTWIN (G. McKeon) shifted out and made contact with ROYAL DREAMER (N. Tomizawa) on two occasions.
Rounding the first turn WARRIOR TRADER (M. Cant), which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied off the heels of PROMOTED (P. Hammersley) and then raced ungenerously to the inside of FELLAHEEN (S. Galloway).
Near the 800m WARRIOR TRADER again raced ungenerously and had to be steadied off the heels of FELLAHEEN.
Race 5: VIDEOPRO 2MW –1200M
1st – Diurnal 2nd – Omnitrader 3rd – Unite And Prosper 4th – Ruember
Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith was fined $100 for failing to declare M. Pelling as the rider of PROPHET JEWELL by the prescribed time.
A short distance after the start, RUEMBER (B. Stewart) raced in restricted room between DIFFICULT (S. Seamer), which shifted out slightly, and BEST FRENCH (S. Katsidis), which shifted in. A short distance later, BEST FRENCH, when being restrained, commenced to race ungenerously and shifted in making contact with the hind quarters of RUEMBER, forcing that horse across the heels of DIFFICULT, which shifted out slightly. RUEMBER then raced ungenerously for some distance following this incident. BEST FRENCH lost ground when unbalanced and being steadied off the heels of RUEMBER.
Approaching the 800m NESSUNO (G. McKeon) commenced to overrace and had to be checked off the heels of UNITE AND PROSPER (P. Hammersley).
When questioned as to the riding tactics adopted on BEST FRENCH, S. Katsidis stated that it was intended for the horse to be ridden mid-field, however after becoming unbalanced and losing ground in the early stages he had no alternative other than to take up a position at the rear. S. Katsidis added that BEST FRENCH was in his opinion disappointing and whilst the horse did not seem to appreciate the rain-affected track, he also felt that there may have been something amiss with the mare. A veterinary examination of BEST FRENCH failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer S. Jones stated that it was intended that the horse be ridden just off the pace due to the speed of runners drawn inside, however he was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of the horse other than it was uncomfortable on the rain-affected track.
Race 6: ZUPPS CLASS 6 H'CAP – 2050M
1st – Mail Train 2nd – Tarrasch 3rd – Natale 4th – Maizcay Miss
RUN A MUK was a late scratching at 9.45 a.m. for veterinary reasons.
S. Galloway was reprimanded for failing to seek permission of the stewards in accordance with AR. 118A to change his riding silks following a shower of rain prior to mounting.
Rounding the first turn EBONY LAD (T. Treichel) got its head up and hung out across the heels of TARRASCH (M. Pelling).
Approaching the 1000m EBONY LAD had to be eased off the heels of FLASHING JACK (R. Goltz).
At the 500m ZYLVESTER (S. Galloway) shifted out to improve, taking TARRASCH wider on the track.
Also near the 500m NATALE (S. Katsidis) had to be steadied off the tiring AEROLITO (D. Craven) and shifted out taking EBONY LAD out on to MAIZCAY MISS (G. McKeon) which was forced wider on the track.
Race 7: RACQ INSURANCE H'CAP – 1350M
1st – Top Marc 2nd – Proudly Agro 3rd – Grandway Shogun 4th – The Kildare Kid
At the 800m PROUDLY AGRO (G. Palmer) was inclined to overrace and had to be steadied off the heels of TOP MARC (M. Pelling).
Race 8: RBWH CLASS 6 H'CAP – 1350M
1st – Pride Of Paris 2nd – Jimmy The Bear 3rd – Key Of Gold 4th – Navarro
HUDSON JACK (S. Galloway) jumped out at the start and brushed QUIN THE ESKIMO (A. Merritt).
Connections of RUSSELL ON were questioned as to the disappointing performance of that horse which was under pressure prior to the home turn and compounded in the straight. S. Katsidis stated that the horse was never really travelling comfortably and was under pressure before the home turn and failed to respond to his riding in the straight. He added that whilst RUSSELL ON did not feel comfortable on the rain-affected track, he felt that the horse may not be suited to being bustled in the early stages at this stage of its preparation and may be looking for races over a longer distance. Trainer S. Jones was at a loss to offer any tangible explanation for the disappointing performance, however did indicate that he may consider placing the horse in races over a longer journey. A veterinary examination of RUSSELL ON failed to reveal any abnormality.
