LORD WESTMINSTER was a late scratching at 9.04 a.m. on veterinary advice.
K. Forrester, rider of ORIENTAL HEIGHTS, was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1900m when not sufficiently clear of A REASON TO LIVE (D. Green), which resulted in that horse being cramped for racing room.
Passing the 1600m, GOLDEN STEP (J. Bowditch) brushed the running rail.
After leaving the 1600m, A REASON TO LIVE (D. Green), which commenced to pull, shifted out, taking ORIENTAL HEIGHTS wider on the track.
Near the 500m, R. McMahon’s (IZA COMIN) left foot slipped from his stirrup iron.
D. Green was dislodged from A REASON TO LIVE after the finishing line. D. Green was examined by the club’s doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
ORIENTAL HEIGHTS raced wide throughout.
GOLDEN STEP, which compounded and finished a distant last, was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon who reported that the horse was suffering from an abnormality in its breathing and cardiac arrythmia. Trainer B. Guy was advised that prior to racing again the horse must pass an endoscopic examination and an ECG, as well as trialling satisfactorily prior to its next race start. A swab sample was taken from GOLDEN STEP.
Race 2: Easyfund 3yo Maiden Plate – 1350m
1st – Karalee 2nd – Way Of The World 3rd – Twostonelighter 4th - Flagzup
PANTHERA LEO (B. Pengelly) jumped away awkwardly.
BALD EAGLE (J. Byrne) and SHANGHAI SULTAN (J. Bowditch) made heavy contact on jumping away.
After leaving the 1100m, SHANGHAI SULTAN commenced to race ungenerously and pull hard, and then hung out after leaving the 900m and the horse continued to hang out for the majority of the race.
Approaching the 500m, TWOSTONELIGHTER (B. Stewart) shifted out off the heels of OBI PARK PRINCESS (S. Seamer), and in doing so took PANTHERA LEO (B. Pengelly) out on to KING XAVIER (M. Radecker).
A. Pattillo, rider of WAY OF THE WORLD, dropped his whip after leaving the 300m.
A post-race veterinary examination of SHANGHAI SULTAN (J. Bowditch) revealed the horse to be showing signs of mild shin soreness in the off fore leg.
Race 3: Hunter Express Maiden Plate – 1110m
1st –Ferrinko 2nd – Spirito Volante 3rd – Demob 4th - Squablue
DOMINUS LORD was a late scratching at 7.45 a.m. on veterinary advice.
As P. Wolfgram was ill, D. Green was substituted as the rider of ANDROUGE.
LETMEBE (A. Pattillo) was slow to begin.
SPIRITO VOLANTE (K. Forrester) jumped outwards at the start and made contact with CARRY THE BRAVE (G. Colless), causing that horse to be checked at the start.
SI EVERO (J. Byrne) jumped inwards at the start, forcing DEMOB (R. McMahon) in on to ANDROUGE (D. Green), which shifted in, making contact with ELECTRIC LADY (M. Palmer).
ANDROUGE had a tendency to lay in approaching the first turn and approaching the 600m, the horse faltered and shifted in abruptly, making heavy contact with SPIRITO VOLANTE (K. Forrester), causing that horse to become unbalanced and strike the running rail.
SI EVERO was caught 3 wide rounding the first turn and obliged to race 3 wide throughout.
SPIRITO VOLANTE was held up for clear running in the straight until after passing the 200m.
After leaving the 200m, R. McMahon, rider of DEMOB, dropped his off-side rein and after regathering it near the finish line dropped his whip.
Race 4: Insurance Premium Funding Class 3 H’cap – 1666m
1st – Guerrouj 2nd – A Sir La 3rd – Trivo 4th - Greenfinder
NIPPON BEE (S. Drake) was a little slow to begin.
TRIVO was tightened on jumping away between A SIR LA (J. Byrne) and GREENFINDER (B. Pengelly), which was taken in by GUERROUJ (K. Forrester) and MEZZEGIE.
MEZZEGIE (M. Palmer) was caught wide rounding the first turn and obliged to race wide for the majority of the race.
Near the 500m, TRIVO (M. Cahill) brushed the hind quarters of MEZZEGIE (M. Palmer).
When under pressure in the straight, NIPPON BEE (S. Drake) shifted in and made contact with the running rail near the 250m. The mare then tired over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of NIPPON BEE revealed the mare to be lame in the off fore leg. A veterinary clearance will be required for NIPPON BEE prior to its next race start.
S. Seamer reported that PICADUKE was inclined to lay in throughout the race and struck the running rail on several occasions. Trainer B. McLachlan indicated that the horse would be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of PICADUKE, which raced under pressure from approaching the 600m and compounded over the latter stages, failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of GUERROUJ in winning today, trainer R. Heathcote stated that at the horse’s previous start at Caloundra on 27 August, it settled further back in the field than anticipated and also struck interference in the race. R. Heathcote added that today he instructed K. Forrester to ride the horse aggressively in an effort to have GUERROUJ positioned forward. R. Heathcote’s explanation was accepted.
Race 5: Workcover F&M Class 3 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Athena Mana Mou 2nd – Diamond Bullet 3rd – Momentously 4th – La Belle Vitesse
PLACHUTTA (C. Whiteley) was inclined to race greenly approaching the first turn and was then caught wide without cover for the remainder of the event.
LESMARTRE (D. Green) was also forced to race wide for the majority of the race.
UNSWERVING (R. McMahon) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and the horse had difficulty obtaining clear running in the latter stages of the race.
JUNK IN THE TRUNK (S. Seamer) had to be checked near the 100m when racing between LOVE BOMB (R. Plumb), which shifted out, and LESMARTRE (D. Green), which was taken in slightly by SCHAPELLE (M. Palmer). R. Plumb, rider of LOVE BOMB, was severely reprimanded for faling to stop riding and straighten his mount when it was shifting ground.
When questioned as to UNSWERVING settling at the rear of the field today, R. McMahon stated that he had intended to try and obtain a position midfield, however after attempting to go forward at the start, the horse did not have the necessary pace and rather than be caught extremely wide from the outside barrier, he elected to move across to take a position nearer to the rail, and this resulted in him settling torwards the rear of the field. Trainer’s representative Mr Michael Hawkes stated that whilst he had expected the horse to settle a little closer than it did, he agreed that UNSWERVING did not have the necessary pace and that R. McMahon had no alternative other than to position the horse back in the field rather than be caught wide. The explanation was noted.
Race 6: Paperless Funding Class 4 H’cap – 1350m
1st – Outside The Flags 2nd – Frottage 3rd – Pentup 4th – Fridndly Embrace
LA PIC (J. Byrne) jumped inwards at the start and made contact with CHUT (S. Drake), which jumped awkwardly.
When questioned, S. Seamer stated that JUST ORDAINED could not muster speed early and was obliged to place the horse under pressure with the whip from the half mile, however the horse did not respond as expected. Trainer B. McLachlan was at a loss to explain the horse’s disappointing performance and undertook to notify stewards of anything that may come to his notice in the days following the race that may have had en effect on the performance today. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
Leaving the 500m, CHUT (S. Drake) shifted out to improve and brushed FRIENDLY EMBRACE (M. Price).
THE CAVERN CLUB (R. Plumb) raced wide throughout.
Race 7: Me@Hunter Doomben Dash Open – 1040m
1st – Power And Gold 2nd – Hot Cymbal 3rd – Warrior Trader 4th – Zoe’s Lad
ZOE’S LAD and CAROLINA’S BOY (J. Bowditch) were both a little slow to begin.
ZOE’S LAD (R. Plumb) was inclined to lay out approaching the home turn.
POWER AND GOLD (S. Drake) shifted ground under pressure close to the finish line.
CRYSTAL LANE (A. Pattillo), which bled from both nostrils during the event, fell over the outside running rail shortly after straightening, and this resulted in A. Pattillo being dislodged. The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the horse also suffered a cardiac arrythmia. Trainer P. Fleming was advised that CRYSTAL LANE would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months, and that due to the nature of the horse’s bleeding attack, CRYSTAL LANE must trial on at least 2 occasions, and he would be required to provide veterinary reports outlining the results of an endoscopic examination and ECG. A swab sample was taken from CRYSTAL LANE.
Race 8: HPF.Com.Au CG&E Class 3 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Chevron Island 2nd – Uvidus 3rd – Digging Deep 4th - Mazacar
The start was delayed when IRON RULER had to be reshod.
On return to scale a protest lodged by B. Pengelly, rider of the 3rd placegetter, UVIDUS, against DIGGING DEEP being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 100m was upheld. After hearing evidence and viewing the film, stewards found that near the 100m, DIGGING DEEP shifted ground significantly, making heavy contact with UVIDUS, which was making ground at that point and as a result of the bump, UVIDUS lost its momentum. Taking into account the ground lost in the incident, the protest was upheld and the Judge’s placings were amended to read: No.5 – CHEVRON ISLAND – 1st; No. 3 – UVIDUS; No. 8 – DIGGING DEEP – 3rd; No. 7 – MAZACAR – 4th.
IRON RULER (N. Day) jumped away awkwardly.
Near the 800m, MAZACAR (M. Radecker) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FINAL CRUNCH (R. Mason), which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. R. Mason, rider of CRUNCH, was cautioned and instructed to provide more clearance in future.
A post-race veterinary examination of UVIDUS revealed the horse to have sustained a laceration to the off foreleg.
ALL WINNERS, JUST ORDAINED, PICADUKE AND CRYSTAL LANE WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
