Race 1: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS 2MW LY H’CAP - 1615m
1st – Ten To Countdown 2nd – Old Belvedere 3rd – Sir Winalot 4th – King Of Soul
As J. Sheehan was to be overweight, B. El-Issa was substituted as the rider of SIR WINALOT. J. Sheehan was fined $400 under AR. 120(b).
S. Seamer was substituted as the rider of KING OF SOUL when J. Powell was to be overweight. J. Powell was fined $200 under AR. 120(b).
SEVEN CROWNIES (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly.
Shortly after the start COOL SCENE (R. Plumb) and KING OF SOUL (S. Seamer) were placed in restricted room between MOTIVATE (J. Cassidy) and SIR WINALOT (B. El-Issa) which shifted out.
Near the 1400m GRAND LOVER (N. Thomas) improved on to the heels of MOTIVATE and blundered.
HIGH ACADEMY (S. Arnold), MOTIVATE and GRAND LOVER raced wide throughout.
Passing the 800m SEVEN CROWNIES shifted out to improve, forcing GRAND LOVER wider on the track. GRAND LOVER was then obliged to race in a wider position for the remainder of the event.
COOL SCENE was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
Race 2: AIR NEW ZEALAND PLATE - 1350m
1st – Roman Squire 2nd – Upilio 3rd – Elegant Roi 4th – Blood ‘N’ Bone
MAJORCA (J. Bowditch) was slow to begin.
Near the 1200m UPILIO (S. Scriven) shifted out slightly and in doing so took SILVER HALO (M. Rodd) outwards. DECEPTION BAY (G. Childs), which was following, was obliged to steady to avoid the heels of SILVER HALO and shifted out hampering ELEGANT ROI (B. Stewart). After this incident DECEPTION BAY overraced for some distance and near the 800m had to be steadied off the heels of BLOOD ‘N’ BONE (J. Cassidy).
NEXGEN (D. Oliver) and BLOOD ‘N’ BONE raced wide throughout.
BITABIFF (M. Morris) was held up for clear running from after passing the 300m.
Stewards issued a charge against jockey M. Cahill, the rider of SAM SAMIR, regarding interference sustained by DANCE HUNTER (D. Dunn) near the 200m, resulting in that horse striking SAM SAMIR’s heels, blundering and almost dislodging its rider. After issuing the charge, stewards could not be satisfed that there was a clear run inside SAM SAMIR at that point and therefore M. Cahill was given the benefit of a grave doubt and the charge was not sustained. CHARVICKY (K. Wharton), which was following, was hampered.
Jockey J. Cassidy, the rider of BLOOD ‘N’ BONE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 100m he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount shifting in when insufficiently clear of MOONLIGHT SHADOW (G. Colless) which had to be checked when tightened for room between THIS TOO SHALLPASS (Z. Purton) and BLOOD ‘N’ BONE. J. Cassidy’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 26 May, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 7 June 2007.
A post-race veterinary examination of NOREIL (L. Innes) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: SOLOMON FOOD GROUP DOOMBEN SLIPPER - 1350m
1st – Sam’s Express 2nd – Kyros 3rd – Bonza Crop 4th – Frosty
SHOCKIE (J. Taylor), which broke through the gates prior to the start, was quickly restrained by its rider, examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
SIR PENTHOUSE (M. Rodd) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1200m LOTS OF SUCCESS (Z. Purton), when being eased, shifted in and inconvenienced ONLY FEATHERS (J. Powell).
Approaching the 1100m FROSTY (B. Pengelly) improved up on to the heels of ONLY FEATHERS and had to be steadied.
PRINCE VILHELM (M. Cahill) and RELEASE ME (G. Childs) raced wide throughout.
CAT EYES (J. Sheehan) laid out rounding the home turn.
When questioned regarding his ride on ENCOSTA TSZYU, jockey S. Scriven stated that his instructions were to go forward. He explained that after beginning only fairly he elected to ride his mount vigorously in an endeavour to take up a forward position prior to reaching the first turn. He added that he elected to continue to ride his mount forward as in his opinion there was not an option to obtain a position closer to the fence with cover. S. Scriven’s explanation was noted.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today on KYROS as opposed to its previous starts where the horse has been ridden forward, jockey D. Oliver stated that his instructions were to have the gelding forward, however after being a little slow to begin he elected to ease KYROS back to obtain a position closer to the fence. His explanation was noted.
A post-race veterinary examination of PRINCE VILHELM failed to reveal any abnormalities.
A post-race veterinary examination ENCOSTA TSZYU revealed a laceration to the near hind leg.
Race 4: SKY CHANNEL DOOMBEN DASH - 1020m
1st – Sheezvalue 2nd – Sectagonal 3rd – Tornado Alley/Consider Yourself
ANDURIL (K. Wharton) jumped in at the start taking ZOE’S LAD (J. Sharp) in on to PROUDLY AGRO (J. Bowditch).
PICTURE BOOK (M. Cahill) and STYLISH QUALO (J. Taylor) were slow to begin.
QUALY (C. Spry) and SHOW BIZ KID (J. Cassidy) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 5: CITY PACIFIC FINANCE PERMIER’S CUP - 2200m
1st – Theseo 2nd – Game On 3rd – Mandela 4th – Pay Me
PEACEFUL HONOUR was a late scratching at 10:20 a.m. on veterinary advice.
CYPRESS POINT (C. Brown) was tightened for room on jumping away between MANDELA (D. Beadman) and GAME ON (G. Colless), which shifted in.
On jumping away RITZY LADY (Z. Purton) was tightened for room between MADAME SHINKO (J. Taylor) and JOTILLA (S. Seamer), which shifted out.
Shortly after the start SHALE SHAKER (C. Spry) and DEVASTATING (D. Oliver) were tightened for room between MADAME SHINKO and BOHEMIAN DANCER (D. Dunn), which shifted in slightly.
SCATTERFUN (J. Cassidy) was obliged to race wide in the early stages and was then obligated to roll forward and take up a position outside the leader.
Passing the 1500m RITZY LADY commenced to overrace and ran up on to the heels of JOTILLA and had to be steadied.
SO YOU (M. Du Plessis) was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
Near the 1400m BRAVE LANCER (G. Childs) was tightened for room inside MANDELA (D. Beadman) which shifted in.
A post-race veterinary examination of CYPRESS POINT revealed the gelding to be sore in both fore fetlocks. Trainer R. James was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for CYPRESS POINT before its next start.
Race 6: MULLINS LAWYERS ROUGH HABIT PLATE - 2020m
1st – Empire’s Choice 2nd – Sands Of Time 3rd – Ready When You Are 4th – Prince Of Truth
PRINCE OF TRUTH (M. Cahill) and KING OF THE NILE (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly.
PEGASUS PRIDE (K. Wharton) and SANDS OF TIME (M. Du Plessis) came together on jumping away. A short distance later PEGASUS PRIDE and SANDS OF TIME were placed in restricted room between GALEN (S. Arnold) and DANEHILL PRINCESS (B. Pengelly), which was inclined to lay in. A short distance later PRINCE OF TRUTH shifted in and bumped DANEHILL PRINCESS.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion SOPHISTICATION (Z. Purton) got its head up when being restrained.
CURRIGEE (S. Seamer) ran wide making the first turn.
Near the 1550m SOPHISTICATION had to be steadied to avoid the heels of READY WHEN YOU ARE (J. Sheehan) which shifted in when insufficiently clear. J. Sheehan was reprimanded under AR. 137(a).
CURRIGEE was inclined to hang out for the majority of the event.
READY WHEN YOU ARE was inclined to lay in under pressure for the majority of the straight.
FORT ‘N’ WON (B. Stewart) was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight until near the 200m.
Jockey M. Du Plessis, the rider of SANDS OF TIME, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of PEGASUS PRIDE, which was taken out, causing tightening to GALEN, which was tightened between that runner and SOPHISTICATION, resulting in GALEN having to be checked. Jockey Du Plessis’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Sunday, 27 May, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 9 June 2007. In addition, M. Du Plessis was fined $1,500. In this incident SOPHISTICATION also had to be checked. As stewards could not be completely satisfied that SOPHISTICATION had to be checked as a result of the movement outwards of SANDS OF TIME due to DANEHILL PRINCESS shifting in, B. Pengelly, the rider of DANEHILL PRINCESS was nevertheless reprimanded under AR. 137(a).
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CURRIGEE, trainer P. Moody stated that in his opinion the horse may not have been entirely comfortable racing around the Doomben circuit and intended to give the horse one more run on a bigger track before considering the horse’s immediate future. Mr Moody undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in the days subsequent to the event. A post-race veterinary examination of CURRIGEE revealed a laceration on the off fore sesamoid.
Race 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT DOOMBEN 10,000 - 1350m
1st – Takeover Target 2nd – Gold Edition 3rd – Mitanni 4th – Black Ink
GEE I JANE (M. Rodd) was tightened on jumping away between TAKEOVER TARGET (J. Ford) and HARD TO CATCH (B. Stewart) which shifted in.
D. Dunn, the rider of ROYAL IDA, accidentally dropped his whip near the 200m.
Swab samples were taken from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters.
Race 8: MINCOM GUNSYND QUALITY - 1200m
1st – Cocktail Supreme 2nd – Sniper’s Bullet 3rd – Stirring 4th – Mohawk
COCKTAIL SUPREME, which was fractious in its tie-up stall, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
SNIPER’S BULLET (M. Cahill) and WESLEY MANOR (J. Bowditch) were tightened on jumping away between STOLIT (J. Taylor) and GO SEQUALO (S. Seamer).
SHE’S A MOUNTAIN (B. El-Issa) jumped away awkwardly.
MOHAWK (K. Wharton) was tightened on jumping away between STIRRING (Z. Purton) and GHETTO BLASTER (C. Brown) which shifted in when jumping away a little awkwardly.
Approaching the 1000m GHETTO BLASTER had to be steadied to avoid the heels of PRINCE LEO (G. Colless), which was taken out slightly by STOLIT. A short distance later GHETTO BLASTER, which had improved to the inside of PRINCE LEO where there was insufficient room, again had to be steadied when PRINCE LEO shifted in slightly.
Passing the 1000m WESLEY MANOR commenced to overrace and near the 800m had to be checked off the heels of GO SEQUALO and shifted out abruptly, inconveniencing MOHAWK (K. Wharton) and taking PRINCE LEO (G. Colless) wider on the track. G. Colless was then obliged to ease PRINCE LEO back to obtain a position at the rear of the field closer to the rail. Trainer G. Ryan advised stewards he would be recommending to connections that WESLEY MANOR undergo a gelding operation.
Near the 700m GHETTO BLASTER improved up on to the heels of SHE’S A MOUNTAIN and hd to be steadied.
Approaching the 600m SNIPER’S BULLET, which was endeavouring to shift out, made contact with GO SEQUALO.
Swab samples were taken from the 1st and 2nd placegetters.
