Race 1: XXXX GOLD PLATE - 1615m
1st – Sir Kingsford 2nd – Little Stranger 3rd – Pit Lane 4th – Our Lukas
Trainer L. Gough was fined $100 under LR. 70 for failing to declare C. Reith as the rider of MACEDON by the prescribed time.
Due to the late arrival on track of the ambulance, the race was late to start.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight J. Byrne (PIT LANE), 4th placegetter, sought permission to view the official video films as he considered there may have been grounds to formally lodge a protest on behalf of connections of PIT LANE. After seeing the available films, J. Byrne did formally lodge a protest against OUR LUKAS being declared 3rd, alleging inteference in the straight. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and viewing the available videos, the stewards formed the view that at about the 200m OUR LUKAS shifted in and made contact with PIT LANE and again at about the 100m shifted in, bumped PIT LANE and carried it from the running to which it was rightfully entitled. Bearing in mind the nose margin at the finish, the stewards were comfortably satisfied that had the crowding to PIT LANE not occurred it would have finished in front of OUR LUKAS and therefore the protest was upheld and placings were amended to be: 10, 3, 9 and 4.
Shortly after the start DEACON had to be checked when tightened for room between REGAL GAZE and BUGSYTWOSHOES, both of which shifted ground.
OUR LUKAS raced wide in the early stages.
SAVE A BUCK and CLAVILLO also raced wide throughout.
At about the 700m REGAL GAZE, which was overracing, became unbalanced and dipped when close to the heels of LUAKI.
S. Galloway (HUME) explained that he enjoyed a nice run in the race in the early stages behind REGAL GAZE but when the pace momentarily steadied at about the 700m REGAL GAZE became unbalanced in front of him and as a consequence he had to steady HUME and momentarily lost his position. He said shortly after when the pace went on he was able to obtain a run through but he thought the incident in the middle stages probably cost him the race today.
After the race the veterinary surgeon reorted that SAVE A BUCK had sustained a puncture wound to the near fore coronet band.
Race 2: BRISBANETIMES.COM.AU H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Three Swallows 2nd – Eire Of Magic 3rd – Release Me 4th – Slick Sniper
As S. Galloway was to be overweight, C. Reith was substituted as the rider of JACARANDA LEADER. S. Galloway was fined $100 under AR. 120(b).
After all runners had been boxed, officials at the start noted that a stray dog was on the track. Stewards were not propared to allow the race to begin until the loose dog had left the racecourse grounds. Because of this the start was delayed considerably and jumped at 1.07 p.m.
CAPRIZZI STRIP, which was slowly away, was hampered shortly after the start when FELIXTRINIDAD shifted in on jumping away.
CHARVICKY (C. McIver) jumped away awkwardly.
SLIM PICKINGS was slow to begin.
As the field settled shortly after the start, WORTH DOING, CERTAIN MAGIC, FELIXTRINIDAD and ALBERT CADABRA all had a tendency to overrace.
CAPRIZZI STRIP raced ungenerously in the early stages.
WELCOME SITE raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.
EIRE OF MAGIC had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.
Apprentice A. Taylor (THREE SWALLOWS) was fined $200 for excessive use of the whip (AR. 137A(1)).
After the race CAPRIZZI STRIP was examined by the veterinary surgeon. He noticed that the horse had a small laceration to its tongue and was also in his opinion making an abnormal breathing noise. The stable representative of Gerald Ryan, trainer of the horse, was told that before CAPRIZZI STRIP can race again a satisfactory certificate of veterinary fitness will have to be produced, which must include the results of an endoscopic examination.
Race 3: JACOB’S CREEK BLANC DE BLANCS H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Cat Eyes 2nd – High Roll’n Woman 3rd – Steel Lips 4th – Deception Bay
The starting time was amended to 1.42 p.m.
LUCIDLY jumped away awkwardly and shifted in making contact with REGAL CASTANEA.
DECEPTION BAY jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
From a difficult gate MALAMBO went forward in an endeavour to find a position, was unable to do so and therefore raced wide throughout.
Rounding the turn into the straight MALAMBO had a tendency to lay in.
Leaving the 300m CAT EYES improved up on to the heels of SLEEK REPEAT and was obliged to alter course to obtain clear running.
Although well back, ARMSTRONG JONES had difficulty obtaining clear running over the final 200m.
Near the 200m CARRY ON DOCTOR was checked when crowded for room between MALAMBO (Blake Shinn), which had a tendency to lay in whilst being ridden out, and CAT EYES, which shifted out slightly. In all the circumstances stewards decided to take no direct action, however Blake Shinn was reprimanded and told that he should make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight in future.
Race 4: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS GOLDED STAKES PLATE - 1200m
1st – One Lickety Split 2nd – Modonna 3rd – Temple Of Boom 4th – Femina Fashion
The starting time was amended to 2.12 p.m.
IRISH DREAM missed the start.
BRISK ZAK was slow away.
Near the 800m ONE LICKETY SPLIT and OUR DREAMING were forced to race in restricted room between FEMINA FASHION and TEMPLE OF BOOM (M. Cahill) which shifted in. M. Cahill was advised to exercise more care in future when shifting ground.
Near the 600m OUR DREAMING struck the heels of TEMPLE OF BOOM and blundered. IRISH DREAM, CAPTAIN SONADOR and BRISK ZAK, which were following, were hampered as a consequence.
In the straight DUAL CHAMBER experienced difficulty obtaining clear running. As a consequence of this the horse was not ridden out as it normally would be.
After the race OUR DREAMING was examined by the veterinary surgeon. He did not notice any abnormality.
Race 5: METRO TILES CHAIRMAN’S H’CAP - 2020m
1st – Ballack 2nd – Rabbuka 3rd – Sir Slick 4th – Absent Friends
The starting time was amended to 2.42 p.m.
Jockey Blake Shinn pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), in that near the 250m he permitted his mount to shift out and dictate the line of GO CART, resulting in that horse being taken out on to QUEEN OF QUEENS, which had to be checked when tightened between GO CART and IMVULA. B. Shinn’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on 13 May and expire at midnight on Thursday, 28 May 2009. A $500 fine was also imposed.
When QUEEN OF QUEENS was checked near the 200m, ANGELO MINNY was checked as a consequence.
A post-race veterinary examination of ACCUMULATE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 6: MITTY’S DOOMBEN CLASSIC PLATE - 1615m
1st – Za Magic 2nd – Orca 3rd – Jimmy Fortunes 4th – Academy Magic
The starting time was amended to 3.22 p.m.
The explanation tendered by Tas Morton, trainer of WEMBLEY, regarding the late notification of the rider, was accepted.
JIMMY FORTUNES blundered on jumping away.
On jumping away both WALK IN THE PARK and ROCKDALE were tightened for room between ZA MAGIC, which shifted in, and PAPAL JOY.
At about the 1500m PAPAL JOY was steadied when momentarily crowded by BOLD GLANCE which was shifting in and going forward. No action was taken.
At about the 1400m FROZONE was checked and JIMMY FORTUNES unnecessarily crowded when tightened by ACADEMY MAGIC, which in turn had to shift ground to avoid the heels of ZA MAGIC (Bradley Stewart), which was shifting in when not quite clear. It was further established that when BOLD GLANCE (Kristy Banks) shifted in when it, too, was not quite clear of ZA MAGIC. Although the crowding to FROZONE and JIMMY FORTUNES was of some significance, the stewards were not able to attribute responsibility to any one rider and accordingly decided that no action should be taken. However, both Stewart and Banks were told they must exercise far more care when shifting ground in future.
Near the 1400m PAPAL JOY had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of ZA MAGIC which shifted in.
Near the 1200m WALK IN THE PARK, which was overracing, shifted out when being restrained by its rider. This allowed ORCA, which was overracing to improve to the inside of WALK IN THE PARK. A short distance later WALK IN THE PARK then shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in ORCA having to be checked and shifting in inconveniencing BAUBLE.
PAPAL JOY overraced in the middle stages.
PAPAL JOY, ROCKDALE and WEMBLEY raced wide throughout.
FROZONE and BAUBLE were unable to secure clear running at any stage in the home straight.
Blake Shinn (BAUBLE) explained that near the 1400m he had to steady when crowded for room between HYDE PARK and FROZONE, both of which shifted some ground. As a consequence of this crowding he got much further out of the race than had been his intention. He went on to say that in the straght he experienced a lot of trouble obtaining clear running.
R. Thompson (ORCA) said that the crowding he received in the early stages resulted in him being back a little further than was his intention. He said also that in the middle stages when WALK IN THE PARK was shifting ground he lost further ground and then in the straight ORCA had a tendency to lay in.
Jockey S. Galloway was stood down from his remaining engagement in Race 8 following his ride in this event.
Race 7: JACOB’S CREEK SPARKLING BTC CUP - 1200m
1st – Duporth 2nd – Bank Robber 3rd – Apache Cat 4th – Absolut Glam
APACHE CAT had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the straight.
After the race APACHE CAT was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon. He said he observed that the horse had sustained a small laceration to the front of its off hind coronet band and in his opinion was exhibiting some signs of soreness in a front off fetlock joint. Stewards believed that before APACHE CAT can race again a veterinary certificate of fitness will have to be produced.
K. Pope (SWISS ACE) said that he had intended to lead in the race but was not able to comfortably do so and raced alongside BANK ROBBER. He said that he thought he had travelled satisfactorily until about the home turn and when the horse was put under pressure did not respond as he expected it would and in all the circumstances was very disappointing. He said the the horse had been working well, looked well before the race and in his opinion pulled up well. Mr Mair, trainer of SWISS ACE, said that he thought the horse had travelled well, but he did say that he had disappointed previously when not able to lead. He also said that he thought SWISS ACE pulled up satisfactorily. However, the Club’s veterinary surgeon said that when he examined SWISS ACE after the race the horse was coughing and it was therefore decided that before SWISS ACE can race again a veterinary certificate of fitness will have to be produced and this must include the results of an endoscopic examination.
Race 8: NOVOTEL BRISBANE DOOMBEN DASH H’CAP - 1110m
1st – She’s In The Guide 2nd – Mr Slick 3rd – Mitanni 4th – Keano
As S. Galloway had been stood down, M. Morris was substituted as the rider of SUN FOR SALE.
When the pace steadied near the 700m SIMPLEST improved up on to the heels of SEQUALLAN and when being restrained became unbalanced and made contact with the running rail and lost considerable ground. SECTAGONAL, which was following, had to be checked as a consequence.
NUCLEAR MEDICINE and PRIDE OF POWER raced wide throughout.
KEANO had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight until about 100m out.
When questioned regarding his riding approaching the home turn and in the early stages of the straight, A. Pattillo (SEQUESTRATE) said that today he had ridden the horse in a similar fashion to that, which he had done many times in the past, and he felt that any endeavour to improve sooner than he did would have meant being pushed off the track and he was happy to follow MITANNI into the race. He said that over the concluding stages he obtained running and was able to ride the horse out. The explanation tendered by A. Pattillo was today recorded.
