Race 1: Sun Tape Storage Open H'cap - 2040m
1st – Honour Happy List 2nd – Tripitz 3rd – Regal Castanea 4th - Woorim
TIRPITZ (S. Seamer) jumped away awkwardly.
Leaving the 800m, HONOUR HAPPY LIST (L. Rolls) shifted out, forcing ENCOSTA TSZYU (R. McMahon) and YIELD CURVE (B. Pengelly) wider. L. Rolls, rider of HONOUR HAPPY LIST, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey S. Katsidis in respect of the performance of WOORIM. S. Katsidis stated he had been instructed to hold a postion midfield if the horse began well, however S. Katsidis stated that after travelling a short distance, WOORIM was reluctant to hold a position in amongst horses and he was obliged to settle WOORIM at the tail of the field. He added that he was forced to apply pressure to the horse throughout the event in order to maintain contact with the main body of the field and was forced to apply the whip from a point near the 1000m in an attempt to improve the position of WOORIM. S. Katsidis further stated that whilst it was customary for the horse to make ground down the outside in its races he felt it best to track up behind other runners today in an attempt to utilise WOORIM’S sprint at the end of the race, however WOORIM did not work into the race as he would have liked and disapointed him over the concluding stages. Trainer R. Heathcote advised that whilst WOORIM had pleased him leading into today’s event, in light of the horse’s performance today, he intended to spell WOORIM.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of ENCOSTA TSZYU, rider R. McMahon stated that ENCOSTA TSZYU enjoyed a nice run in the early stages, and near the 700m he was in a position to trail the eventual winner HONOUR HAPPY LIST, however when that horse accelerated passing the 550m, ENCOSTA TSZYU lost the back of HONOUR HAPPY LIST and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. R. McMahon added that the gelding had worked well in preparation for today’s race and he had expected the horse to race well. Trainer B. Smith advised stewards that he would have further veterinary tests carried out on the gelding and undertook to advise stewards of the results of such tests.
A post-race veterinary examination of ICANWIN, which compounded from the 700m and finished some distance from the remainder of the field, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer I. Duke will be interviewed regarding the performance of ICANWIN.
Jockey B. Pengelly reported that YIELD CURVE was uncomfortable in its action over the final stages. A post-race veterinary examination of YIELD CURVE revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg.
Following a veterinary examination of YIELD CURVE whereby it was reported that the gelding was lame in the off foreleg, trainer’s representative Mr N. Peterson was questioned and informed stewards that the horse had sustained a stone bruise on the off fore hoof on Monday, 1 February. Trainer Mrs K. Carroll subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge under AR140(a), in that she failed to advise stewards of a condition which may have affected the performance of the horse today. Mrs Carroll was fined the sum of $500.
Race 2: Sun Blade Servers QTIS 600 2yo H'cap - 1200m
1st – Heartsareforlove 2nd – Pinnacle Ridge 3rd - I’llbetricked 4th – More More More
PINNACLE RIDGE (L. Cassidy) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, hampering I’LLBETRICKED (A. Erhart).
Shortly after the start, TAME OUR GIRL (A. Spinks) shifted in and away from PINNACLE RIDGE (L. Cassidy) and made contact with LINES OF TIME (R. McMahon). For some distance after this, LINES OF TIME was obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of PINNACLE RIDGE (L. Cassidy), whichi was inclined to lay in.
Rounding the first turn, I’LLBETRICKED (A. Erhart) was inclined to overrace at the heels of BETTER OPTION (J. Bowditch).
Leaving the 700m, MORE MORE MORE (G. Colless) shifted out to improve and brushed CRAIGELLACHIE (M. Palmer).
CRAIGELLACHIE (M. Palmer) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of MORE MORE MORE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MORE MORE MORE, G. Colless stated that the horse, despite being 3 wide from the 700m, seemed somewhat flat and did not finish the race off today as expected. He added that MORE MORE MORE had worked well in preparation for today’s race, however following the race was of the view that the horse may need to be spelled. Trainer’s representative Mr Jones indicated that in all likelihood the horse would be spelled.
Race 3: Fujitsu Managed Services 2MW Last Year H'cap - 1020m
1st – Monashee Dancer 2nd – Perugin Thought 3rd – Carry The Clubs 4th -
SHE’S ALL GREEK (M. Hellyer) was inclined to lay in approaching the first turn.
BOLD REASON (B. Pengelly) brushed the running rail rounding the first turn.
CATTLEMAN (J. Byrne) was caught wide on the first turn and obliged to work forward 3 wide until a point approaching the 500m.
A post-race veterinary examination of MONASHEE DANCER revealed the horse had bled from one nostril. Trainer D. Bell was advised that the MONASHEE DANCER must perform a 1000m gallop before stewards prior to being permitted to race again.
A post-race veterinary examination of KUTALO, which finished last, failed to reveal any significant abnormality. It was noted that KUTALO had lost its off fore plate in running.
PELTRO lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 4: Sun Sparc NMW H'cap - 1640m
1st – Tolart 2nd – Mauries Pick 3rd – Gold Rating 4th - Bretonneux
As R. McMahon was to be overweight, A. Spinks was substituted as the rider of ETON HALL. R. McMahon was fined $200.
Apprentice A. Chau was fined $200 for failing to claim his full allowance on PRINCE TELESTO.
ETON HALL (A. Spinks) jumped away awkwardly and missed the start.
Rounding the first turn, ESPARANZA (J. Bowditch) improved on to the heels of GLASGOW TOWN (O. Turpin) and then overraced for some distance.
MR NAPPY (G. Colless) overraced in the middle stages.
Near the 100m, OUR SCOOBY DOO (C. McIver) was momentarily tightened for room between GLASGOW TOWN and WILL IMPRESS (M. Hellyer), which shifted in under pressure.
Approaching the finish line, GLASGOW TOWN shifted in and made contact with MR NAPPY (G. Colless).
ETON HALL raced 3 wide throughout.
G. Colless, rider of MR NAPPY, reported that when PRINCE TELESTO commenced to tire near the 600m, he was obliged to go to the outside of that horse’s heels, and that whilst he gave consideration to steadying his mount at that stage, he was of the opinion that MR NAPPY had been somewhat one-paced during its most recent performances and therefore he felt it was in the horse’s best interests to keep improving forward so as to not become embroiled in a sprint home over the concluding stages.
When questioned as to his riding of DON VITO in the early stages of the straight, B Pengelly explained that whilst there was an opportunity in the early stages of the straight to improve to the inside of MAURIES PICK onto the back of BRETONNEUX, he was reluctant to do so as he may have then been held up to the inside of MAURIES PICK and unable to improve any further. B Pengelly added that he felt he should attempt to comply with his instructions to position DON VITO to the outside in the straight and therefore elected to direct Don Vito around the heels of MAURIES PICK and behind the fancied runner TOLART with a view of moving to it’s outside and allowing DON VITO an uninterrupted run to the line. B Pengelly further stated that DON VITO did not sprint as well as he would have liked in the latter stages of the straight and would be better suited over a longer journey. His explanation was accepted.
Race 5: Fujitsu Business Solutions Open H'cap - 1350m
1st – Red Sphere 2nd – Charming Rogue 3rd – Pertinence 4th - Soiled
Trainer B. Crowley was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for SNACKMAN by the prescribed time.
After leaving the 100m, ON THE UP (L. Cassidy), which was improving quickly into a run, had to be steadied when both it and SNACKMAN (M. Hellyer) were tightened for room by SOILED (B. Pengelly), which shifted in. B. Pengelly, rider of SOILED, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
SOILED lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 6: Sun Ray Systems F&M Quality H'cap - 1200m
1st – Plain Magic 2nd – Chakvetadze 3rd – Inanna 4th – Dance Girl Dance
Trainer M. Nolan reported to stewards that in light of the recent failure of CHAKVETADZE when leading, he instructed S. Katsidis to ride the mare from a midfield or rearward position today. CHAKVETADZE was ridden accordingly.
Near the 400m, DANCE GIRL DANCE (L. Cassidy) and KRYPTELON (J. Bowditch) were forced to race in restricted room to the inside of SHAKEVA (D. Craven). D. Craven, rider of SHAKEVA, was cautioned and instructed to provide more room to runners on his inside.
SHAKEVA raced 3 wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of KRYPTELON, J. Bowditch explained that the mare travelled well in the early stages, however did race in restricted room rounding the home turn, and when asked for an effort in the straight, KRYPTELON did not finish the race off today as it had in the past. Trainer D. Kelly reported the horse when racing in restricted room had sustained a laceration which may have affected its performance today.
A post-race veterinary examination of KRYPTELON revealed the horse had sustained a laceration to the near fore pastern.
Race 7: Fujitsu Australia Class 6 Plate - 1200m
1st – Royalaz 2nd – Joint Chiefs 3rd – Cat Eyes 4th – Telesto Warrior
PUB TORQUE (J. Bowditch) was tightened for room on jumping away between SILVERN (J. Holder) and ROYALAZ (M. Palmer), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 800m, ROYALAZ improved to the inside of SAMTHEFLIRT (L. Rolls) and in so doing tightened the running of UNINTENTIONAL (C. Reith), which had to be steadied.
SILVERN (J. Holder) was caught wide early and then obliged to work forward wider on the track to a point leaving the 600m where it took up the lead.
After leaving the 300m, TELESTO WARRIOR (J. Byrne) was held up for clear running and approaching the 200m shifted out to improve and made contact with MARTIROS (A. Spinks).
PUB TORQUE raced wide throughout.
Jockey S. Seamer reported that ATTALLUS was hard ridden in the middle stages of the race, however found the line quite well. He was of the opinion that the gelding may be better suited when being stepped up in distance.
A post-race veterinary examination of DARDAN revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer T. Bailey’s representative was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for DARDAN prior to its next race start.
B. Stewart, rider of JOINT CHIEFS, was fined $200 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram over his declared riding weight.
Race 8: Sun Disk Systems 3yo QTIS H'cap - 1110m
1st –Captain Sonador 2nd – Falvelina 3rd – Huckleberry Dane 4th -
PURR OF GLORY (J. Byrne), TEDIKA (A. Spinks) and MAROON BELLS (J. Holder) were slow to begin.
FALVELINA (L. Cassidy) jumped away awkwardly and missed the start.
RACING PEGASUS also began awkwardly.
When the pace slackened leaving the 700m, HUCKLEBERRY DANE (C. McIver) improved to the inside of BEVAGNA (M. Hughes) where there was insufficient room and had to be steadied. SHOW A LION HEART (G. Colless), PURR OF GLORY (J. Byrne) and TEDIKA, which were trailing, all had to be restrained to varying degrees as a result. At the same stage, DANCINGWITHANGELS (M. Hellyer) improved up on to the heels of RACING PEGASUS (S. Katsidis) and shifted out, which enabled RACING HEART (D. Brown), which was overracing, to improve to that horse’s inside. A short distance later, FALVELINA then shifted in, taking DANCINGWITHANGELS in on to RACING HEART, which had to be steadied.
FALVELINA raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of PURR OF GLORY. J. Byrne stated that the horse travelled well in the early stages when there was considerable speed in the race, however when the pace slackened near the 700m and he was forced to take hold of PURR OF GLORY, the filly seemed to lose her momentum and considering she is a lightly framed filly carrying 57 kilograms, he felt this incident had a significant effect on the overall performance of PURR OF GLORY. A post-race veterinary examination of PURR OF GLORY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards sought an explanation in regards to the performance of RACING PEGASUS. S. Katsidis stated that the horse was able to gain a position outside the leader quite easily in the early stages, however after assuming that position, RACING PEGASUS, in his opinion, lost concentration, and despite his urging failed to respond to his riding thereafter. S. Katsidis added that as he felt something was amiss with the horse he did not place the filly under significant pressure in the home straight. He added that when RACING PEGASUS jumped away awkwardly it may have injured itselt. Stewards interviewed trainer B. Baldwin, who could not offer any explanation for the performance, and stewards advised Mr Baldwin they would set the matter aside and consider whether any embargo be placed on RACING PEGASUS pending further veterinary examinations in the days subsequent to the race. A post-race veterinary examination of RACING PEGASUS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
HUCKLEBERRY DANE lost its off fore plate in running.
