Race 1: Southern Cross Sports Club Open H’cap - 2200m
1st – Tabulate 2nd – Honour Happy List 3rd – Regal Castanea 4th - Tripitz

L. Cassidy reported that REGAL CASTANEA commenced to hang out leaving the 1600m, which resulted in the horse drifting off the running rail down the back straight. He further added that rounding the home turn when he applied pressure to REGAL CASTANEA, the gelding again hung out and shifted away from the running rail. A post-race veterinary examination of REGAL CASTANEA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

S. Seamer, rider of TRIPITZ, was $200 for striking the horse in a forehand manner 6 times prior to the 100m.

Race 2: Ferg Reid QTIS 600 2yo H'cap - 1350m
1st – Heartsareforlove 2nd – Random Orbit 3rd – Gold Cat 4th – Huff And Puff

PINNACLE RIDGE (L. Cassidy) and MISS LUCKY CHOICE (J. Byrne) made contact on jumping away.

PROUD AS PUNCH (R. Goltz) and HUFF AND PUFF (A. Erhart) also came together and bumped at the start.

NASTRO BLU (S. Seamer) appeared to lose its position approaching the 600m when tightened by GOLDCAT (C. Reith), which was inclined to shift in and away from MISS LUCKY CHOICE as that horse was shifting from a 3 wide position to race outside the leader, HUFF AND PUFF, which had a tendency to race away from the rails. J. Byrne, rider of MISS LUCKY CHOICE, was cautioned and instructed to provide more clearance in similar circumstances.

PIN (J. Bowditch) laid out rounding the home turn.

When HEARTSAREFORLOVE (C. Munce) was attempting to secure clear running approaching the 250m between MISS LUCKY CHOICE (J. Byrne) and PIN (J. Bowditch), PIN shifted in slightly and made contact with HEARTSAREFORLOVE .

Near the 100m, GOLDCAT (C. Reith) shifted out to improve, resulting in MISS LUCKY CHOICE having to be steadied momentarily. In this incident, MISS LUCKY CHOICE became unbalanced.

PIN raced 3 wide without cover throughout the race.

A. Erhart reported that HUFF AND PUFF overraced in the lead and he felt this had a bearing on the gelding’s capacity to finish the race off.

Race 3: Helen Smith Architect F&M H'cap - 1200m
1st – Casholet 2nd – Sirena Ligera 3rd – Dance Girl Dance 4th – Welcome Site

USE TO BE A DANCER (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

CONVENT HILL (T. Bell) improved up on the heels of the tiring DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL (J. Byrne) near the 150m and was forced to to be restrained off the heels of that horse. CONVENT HILL was then unable to obtain clear running for the remainer of the event.

CASHOLET (M. Palmer) raced 3 wide throughout.

When asked for an explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL, jockey J. Byrne stated that whilst he had to make use of the mare in the early stages to secure the lead, DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL relaxed well and he was satisfied with the mid race tempo. He added that in all the circumstances he was of the opinion the mare would have been able to finish the race off well, however when he placed DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL under pressure on straighening it did not respond and in hindsight J. Byrne felt that the mare may not have been comfortable on the rain affected surface. Trainer G. Heinrich explained that DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL had suffered from heat stress following its last run and whilst she was satisfied with the horse’s work in preparation for today’s race, she had since formed a view in consideration of the mare’s disappointing performance that it may not have fully recovered and would now send DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

C. Munce, rider of REDIBIS, which performed below expectations, explained that after relinquishing the lead to DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL in the early stages when there was a strong early speed he was able to position REDIBIS in a nice position just behind the leaders however when the pace slowed in the middle stages, REDIBIS overraced and failed to finish the race off as expected. Trainer T .Gollan advised stewards that, in his opinion, the reason for the disappointing performance of REDIBIS today could be directly attributed to the horse overracing during the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination of REDIBIS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 4: Norm Engineering 1MW H'cap - 1350m
1st – Kneel And Raise 2nd – Black Morgan 3rd – Telesto Warrior 4th – Shamardashing

ULTRA (B. Pengelly) jumped outwards at the start and brushed TELESTO WARRIOR (G. Colless).

EDDIE RAPIDO (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.

BLACK MORGAN (D. Brown), which had been held up rounding the home turn in the early stages of the straight, shifted out leaving the 300m to improve and in doing so made contact with CHASSTELAIN (J. Stanley).

J. Bryne, rider of JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS, which performed disappointingly, explained that whilst the gelding travelled well in the early stages of the race it did not travel as strongly as it had at its previous starts, and passing the 600m he was compelled to ride the horse along just to maintain his position. A short distance thereafter, JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS commenced to tire and failed to respond to his riding. In consideration of the performance of JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS, J. Byrne was of the opinion that the gelding had come to the end of its preparation. Trainer J. McLachlan concurred with the comments of J. Byrne and indicated to stewards that the horse would be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Following this race the track rating was upgraded to Dead 4.

Race 5: Rankin’s On The Mall Class 6 Plate – 1615m
1st –Jazz Heart 2nd – Raincoat 3rd – Gold Rating 4th – Pride Of Power

TEARY EYED (M. Hellyer) and CHARVICKI (S. Scriven) were both slow to begin.

Rounding the first turn, JAZZ HEART (J. Byrne) commenced to pull hard and shifted wider when eased off the heels of ALL OUR WAY (N. Paine), resulting in UNDER CONSTRUCTION (J. Wood) being forced wider on the track.

ACADEMY MAGIC (M. Palmer), which was caught wide on the first turn, was obliged to race wide in the middle stages until assuming a position outside the leader near the 800m.

Rounding the home turn, JAZZ HEART improved up on the heels of LIGHT RED (L. Rolls) and had to be steadied.

MAURIES PICK (D. Brown) was unable to obtain clear running from the 300m until approaching the 100m.

GOLD RATING (T. Bell) was held up for clear running in the home straight until near the 200m.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from Mr D. Murphy, trainer of LIGHT RED in respect to the apparent change of tactics employed on the gelding today. D. Murphy explained he had given no specific instructions to apprentice L. Rolls other than to advise him that, in his opinion, there was a lack of speed in the race and that if LIGHT RED began well and there was an opportunity to take up a forward position he should do so. Whilst stewards took no direct action against D. Murphy, he was reminded of his obligations to advise stewards of any change of tactics in future.

Race 6: EIS Open H'cap - 1350m
1st – Chakvetadze 2nd – Red Sphere 3rd – Charming Rogue 4th – Cocktail Supreme

As R. McMahon was indisposed, B. El-Issa was substitued as the rider of LOOKING FUR LANG.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce, rider of SOILED, in respect to his riding of that gelding from a point leaving the 200m. Rider C. Munce explained that approaching the 200m he was cramped for room between FANGLES (J. Byrne), which shifted out, and CHARMING ROGUE (J. Wood) and he was forced to steady SOILED. C. Munce added that SOILED, in his opinion, had come to the end of his run under the big weight and he was reluctant to apply undue pressure when he felt the horse was doing its best. Whilst stewards acknowledged the points raised within C. Munce’s explanation he was nonetheless reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the winning post.

Race 7: Trident QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1200m
1st – Our Mr Cashman 2nd – Show A Lion Heart 3rd – Unica Bahaya 4th – Listen Son

BELLETRIST was declared a late scratching at 4.03 pm when the horse was injured in the mounting enclosure. Subsequent to the event all monies invested on BELLETRIST were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 3 cents in the dollar on the face value of win and place tickets.

A waring was issued to the connections of BEACH MODEL, which proved difficult to load.

Apprentice T. Bell, rider of UNICA BAHAYA, reported that his whip had become entangled in the front of the barrier gates and was displaced from his grasp on jumping away.

REDBOLT (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly.

MAROON BELLS (J. Holder) was slow to begin.

M. Hellyer, rider of STREET STALL, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in and make heavy contact with the hind quarterrs of REDBOLT (J. Taylor) a short distance after the start.

Near the 800m, BEACH MODEL (B. El-Issa) improved up on to the heels of FALVELINA (L. Cassidy) and when being restrained shifted out, taking WELL SATISFIED (C. Munce) out on to PURR OF GLORY (J. Byrne). GO CAM (C. Reith), which was following, was inconvenienced as a consequence.

K. Banks, rider of LISTEN SON, reprimanded for striking her mount in a forehand manner on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy in respect to the disappointing performance of FALVELINA. L. Cassidy stated that the horse travelled quite well in the early stages, taking up a position behind RACING PEGASUS. L. Cassidy added that a RACING PEGASUS commenced to compound forward of him near the 600m and he was obliged to move to a 3-wide position from that point, but despite this was disapointed in the way FALVELINA finished the race off. L. Cassidy further stated that, in his opinion, the filly performs best on firmer tracks. A post-race veterinary examination of FALVELINA revealed the horse had sustained a laceraton to the near fore fetlock.

Apprentice L. Rolls, rider of RACING PEGASUS, which compounded to finish a distant last, explained to stewards that shortly after leaving the gates he was somewhat concerned with the action of the horse, adding that it was under severe pressure passing the 800m and compounded from the 600m, compelling him to retire the horse from the event. Trainer B. Baldwin was unable to offer any explanation for the poor run, stating that the horse trialled well in preparation for today’s race, however felt that it may not have been entirely suited by the short back up since trialling. Mr Baldwin added that he intended to have veterinary examations carried on the horse when it returned to the stables and would monitor the condition of RACING PEGASUS and undertook to advise stewards of any abnormality that may come to light in the following days that may have had a bearing on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of RACING PEGASUS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards in consideration of the past 2 performances of RACING PEGASUS intend to revisit the matter once the results of all veterinary tests have been received.

AQUILA BRAVE lost its off fore plate in running.

When the pace slackened approaching the 800m, LIFEBUOY (T. Bell) and BRINGELLY (S. Seamer) overraced for a short distance.
