Trainer D. Murphy was fined $200 for failing to scratch GRIMHILD’S REVENGE by the prescribed time.
Race 1: NCA Insurance Services Pty Ltd Open H'cap - 2200m
1st – Eureka 2nd – Yield Curve 3rd – Patmoss 4th - Kinsmate
As M. Bennett was to be overweight, J. Byrne was substitued as the rider of DESERT BUNNY. M. Bennett was fined $100.
EUREKA (L. Cassidy) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with YIELD CURVE (S. Scriven).
WILDWIND SPIRIT (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.
Following this race the track rating was upgraded to Good 3.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WILDWIND SPIRIT, J. Taylor explained to stewards that after the gelding was slow to begin, it never travelled welll at any stage and took no competitive part in the race. Trainer’s representative, Mrs H. Bowditch, was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the gelding’s performance and she was advised that a warning would be placed on WILDWIND SPIRIT for what stewards deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance. A post-race veterinary examination of WILDWIND SPIRIT failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Race 2: Kate D Art & Colour QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1615m
1st – Hour Of Peril 2nd – Random Orbit 3rd – Angel From Above 4th - Coolshow
Stewards adjourned an inquiry into R. McMahon being overweight on CASTLE EXPRESS. P. Hammersley was substituted as the rider of that gelding.
AFRICAN MAMA (C. Munce) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with RAPID LEICA DANE (J. Byrne).
CASTLE EXPRESS (P. Hammersley) was slow to begin.
Rounding the turn near the 1400m, PIN (S. Traecey) commenced to overrace and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of HOUR OF PERIL (G. Colless) and then shifted out and made heavy contact with RANDOM ORBIT (J. Wood).
DRIVING REIGN (M. Hellyer), ZIPPITY JET (R. Hinricks) and PIN all overraced in the early and middle stages.
RAPID LEICA DANE (J. Byrne) raced wide in the early and middle stages, before being ridden forward to position outside the leader near the 800m.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, DARK SECRETS (J. Bowditch) was held up and unable to improve, and near the 300m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of the tiring DRIVING REIGN.
Approaching the 200m, AFRICAN MAMA, when weakening, shifted out and brushed PIN.
Nearing the winning post, E. Wilkinson, rider of ANGEL FROM ABOVE, dropped his whip.
APRICAN MAMA (C. Munce) and ZIPPITY JET (R. Hinricks) raced wide throughout the race.
Apprentice R. Hinricks reported that ZIPPITY JET travelled well during the race, however when placed under pressure upon straightening it raced very ungenerously and was inclined hang out. She added that the gelding was having only its first start in a tongue-tie today and may not have appreciated this gear.
When asked to explain the performance of RAPID LEICA DANE, J. Byrne explained that he was forced to race wide in the early and middle stages, and as he was unable to obtain cover he rode the gelding forward to a position outside the leader near the 800m. He added that although RAPID LEICA DANE weakened badly over the final 200m, he attributed this to the hard run it had during the race. A post-race veterinary examination of RAPID LEICA DANE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. A routine swab sample was taken from the horse.
Stewards also sought an explanation from jockey C. Munce regarding the performance of AFRICAN MAMA, which weakened over the final 300m. C. Munce explained that he was forced to raced wide throughout without cover, and as a result of this the filly was unable to finish the race off.
Race 3: Rochele Painting QTIS 2yo H'cap - 1010m
1st – Dazzing Kind 2nd – Sweet Reward 3rd – Zed Man 4th - Lomu
Stewards accepted the explanation from M. Wood regarding his failure to claim his full allowance on MERRYANNA as he was only notified by his manager of this engagement at a late stage.
BEVICO GIRL (C. Munce), SWEET REWARD (L. Cassidy), DANISH WHISKEY (M. Speers) and MERRYANNA (M. Wood) were slow to begin.
LOMU (M. Hellyer) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, inconveniencing SWEET REWARD (L. Cassidy).
PUBLICAN (C. McIver) shifted out at the start, resulting in BEVICO GIRL (C. Munce) having to be checked.
Approaching the 800m, PUBLICAN hung out, resulting in MERRYANNA being taken wider on the track.
Near the 600m, MERRYANNA (M. Wood) shifted in and away from PUBLICAN, resulting in LITTLE BEAUJANGLES (J. Bowditch) and SWEET REWARD (L. Cassidy) being placed in restricted room for a short distance.
SWEET REWARD (L. Cassidy) was held up and unable to obtain clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, and near the 200m when it improved into a run between TOP BUTTON (J. Wood) and LOMU, SWEET REWARD was inconvenienced when LOMU shifted out under pressure.
Both PUBLICAN (C. McIver) and DANISH WHISKEY (M. Speers) hung out throughout the race and proved difficult to ride. Mr P. Hulbert, trainer of PULICAN, and Mr L. Birchley, trainer of DANISH WHISKEY, were advised that their respective horses would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to their next race start.
A post-race veterinary examination of COLLECTOR, which trailed the field throughout the event revealed the colt to be shin sore in both fetlocks. Trainer R. Bradshaw’s representative was advised he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for COLLECTOR and would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
Race 4: L.C. Loynes & Associates Class 6 H'cap - 1010m
1st – Wild Wilbur 2nd - Lough Rea 3rd – Lilleelavee 4th - Bruleur
As apprentice A. Butler was to be overweight, apprentice J. Wood was substituted as the rider of BRULEUR. A. Butler was fined the sum of $300.
EASY ROCKER (S. Scriven) and KINGOFSPIRIT (K. Wharton) were slow to begin.
HUSS (L. Cassidy) blundered shortly after the start and shifted out, hampering CONTESTED BID (C. McIver).

Near the 800m, LOUGH REA (M. Speers) shifted in and away from WILD WILBUR (J. Byrne) despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in SILVER SCHOLAR (K. Yoshida) having to be checked and BRULEUR (J. Wood) being tightened for room. RUMBA JACK (B. Thomson), which was following, also had to be steadied as a consequence. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that LOUGH REA must trial to the stewards satisfaction prior to its next race start.
BRULEUR (J. Wood) hung out from the 800m until shortly after straightening. Trainer S. Morrisey was advised that a warning was being placed on BRULEUR regarding its racing manners.
Near the 200m, ADMIRAL GHERKIN (M. Wood), which was weakening, was inconvenienced by LA CHANCE FINALE (C. Munce), which shifted out to improve. C. Munce, rider of LA CHANCE FINALE, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
ADMIRAL GHERKIN (M. Wood) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of SILVER SCHOLAR revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to the near fore fetlock. Trainer C. McAppion explained that the gelding’s best form as been on cushion tracks, however SILVER SCHOLAR met with interference at the 800m, which contributed to the gelding’s failure to finish the race off in the home straight. Trainer C. McAppion undertook to report to stewards any abnormality with SILVER SCHOLAR which becomes apparent in the days following the race.
Race 5: Aitkenvale Family Health Centre 1mw H'cap - 1200m
1st – Captain Clayton 2nd – Bazzooka 3rd – Kanetoshi King 4th – Mr Nappy
WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY (L. Cassidy), which became fractious in the barriers, was removed from the gates, inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. Following the race, L. Cassidy explained that WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY travelled well in the early stages, however failed to respond to his riding after passing the 700m and weakened badly from the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination of WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY revealed the gelding to have sustained minor abrasions to the near and off forelegs and near-side eye. Trainer K. Schweida explained that the gelding had pleased him leading up to today’s race, and he undertook to report any abnormality with the gelding which may have had a bearing on today’s performance. A swab sample was taken from WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY.
FIRST EDITION (B. Stewart) knuckled at the start and was then hampered by FALVADORE (M. Hellyer), which shifted out.
GURU (R. Wiggins) overraced in the early stages and for some distance after passing the 900m had to be restrained to avoid the heels of MR NAPPY (J. Wood). GURU then continued to overrace in the middle stages.
In the early stages of the home straight, BAZZOOKA (A. Coome) and CAPTAIN CLAYTON (C. Munce) were held up and unable to improve.
Near the 200m, CAPTAIN CLAYTON shifted out around the heels of KANETOSHI KING (A. Butler) to improve and made contact with FALVADORE.
SEEM IM (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
Race 6: Aspect Living Pty Ltd Quality H'cap - 1350m
1st – Rightson 2nd – Secrets Untold 3rd – One Lickety Split 4th - Pyramids
As M. Cahill was to be overweight, B. Stewart was substituted as the rider of RIGHTSON.
M. Cahill will be interviewed regarding this matter.
After being slow to begin, PRIMEVAL DEMAND (C. Munce) was further hampered at the start by PYRAMIDS (G. Colless), which shifted in.
In the early stages, SAVE A BUCK (J. Taylor) overraced and near the 1200m, improved to the inside of LIFEBOAT (E. Wilkinson) where there was insufficient room and had to be checked. A short distance later, SAVE A BUCK shifted in, bumping with MY LIMIT (J. Byrne), which was taken in towards the running rail.
PEPPERWOOD (C. McIver) and JUNGLE HEAT (R. Wiggins) also overraced in the early stages.
Over the final 100m, MY LIMIT (J. Byrne) was disappointed for a run between PATTIES MATE (M. Morris) and ONE LICKETY SPLIT (S. Traecey).
SECRETS UNTOLD (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
Jockey J. Taylor was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on SAVE A BUCK, which settled in a midfield position, which was in contrast to its most recent start where it led. J. Taylor explained that SAVE A BUCK began only fairly and the gelding could not muster pace in the early stages, so he elected to obtain cover behind LIFEBOAT, which he expected to race in a forward postion. J. Taylor added that shortly after passing the 1200m after positioning behind LIFEBOAT, that runner restrained, which placed him further back than anticipated. Mr T. Hardy, trainer of SAVE A BUCK, confirmed the instructions that SAVE A BUCK had to be ridden with cover if possible, and that it was not his specific instruction for the gelding to lead at its most recent start. Stewards noted the explanation of both parties.
Race 7: Padua College Class 6 H'cap - 1350m
1st –Age Of Heroes 2nd – Telesto Warrior 3rd – Cool Edition 4th - Mauled
The start of this race was delayed when AGE OF HEROES sprung a near fore plate during its preliminary. AGE OF HEROES was attended to by the club’s farrier.
UPYONDER (R. Wiggins) had to be checked shortly after the start between TELESTO WARRIOR (C. Munce), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, and DESTINY PARTNERS (J. Byrne), which shifted in.
CAT EYES (M. Hellyer) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, inconveniencing PIMPALA COBBER (S. Traecey).
When the pace steadied near the 1000m, CAT EYES commenced to overrace and had to be checked to avoid the heels of THREE SWALLOWS (E. Kehoe). PIMPALA COBBER (S. Traecey), which was following CAT EYES, had to be checked. CAT EYES continued to overrace and near the 700m shifted out to avoid the heels of THREE SWALLOWS, resulting in COOL EDITION (P. Hammersley) being taken wider on the track.
After passing the 600m, CAT EYES attempted to shift out from behind JACKPOT to improve and on a number of occasions brushed DESTINY PARTNERS.
PIMPALA COBBER had difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight when awkwardly placed at the heels of the tiring THREE SWALLOWS (E. Kehoe).
THREE SWALLOWS was held up in the early stages of the home straight and unable to improve.
DESTINY PARTNERS (J. Byrne) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of CAT EYES failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer K. Wood stated that he was disapointed with the effort of the gelding and that it was more than likely his intention to freshen up CAT EYES.
Race 8: TH Cock Pty Ltd Class 5 4yo & Up H'cap - 1615m
1st – Ashma’s Gold 2nd – Seesawing 3rd – Telestah La Vistah 4th – Mr Doyle
SEESAWING (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
PEA EYE CEE (J. Byrne) shifted out shortly after the start and made contact with PENNY LOUISE (J. Wood).
PINPOINT ACCURACY (M. Hellyer) was inclined to lay in shortly after the start. This resulted in RAPID MAGIC (G. Colless) and ASMA’S GOLD (J. Holder) being tightened for room.
Approaching the 600m, PINPOINT ACCURACY attempted to shift out from behind the heels of PEA EYE CEE (J. Byrne) to improve and bumped with MR DOYLE (J. Taylor) on a number of occasions.
WINMARA (P. Hammersley) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight, and approaching the 100m was obliged to alter course to the inside of PINPOINT ACCURACY in order to improve.
After passing the 200m, PINPOINT ACCURACY, which was inclined to lay in, was inconvenienced by PENNY LOUISE (J. Wood), which shifted out when weakening.
ZAMAN (C. Munce) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the performance of RAPID MAGIC. G. Colless explained that after being hampered at the start, the gelding settled back in the field which is consistent with its normal racing pattern. He added that after passing the 800m he raced in restricted room inside of REGAL GAZE for a short period. G. Colless further stated that with the 58 kilograms he elected to remain to the inside and save valuable ground and when placed under pressure on straightening the gelding finished the race off well.
Apprentice M. Wood, rider of FRIDAY NIGHTS, and apprentice J. Wood, rider of PENNY LOUISE, were both questioned regarding the the tactics they adopted in the early stages of the race where both horses were ridden forward to share the lead and in doing so set a fast tempo. Apprentice J. Wood explained that he was instructed to ride PENNY LOUISE in a forward position and after riding aggressively from its wide barrier, he was able to cross horses to his inside and obtain the lead near the 1400m. J. Wood added that when challenged by FRIDAY NIGHTS he attempted to restrain his mount, however the mare commenced to overrace and he was unable for some distance to allow FRIDAY NIGHTS to proceed forward to the lead near the 1100m. M. Wood explained that he rode aggressively in the early stages in an attempt to comply with instructions, and that near the 1400m when racing outside PENNY LOUISE he attempted to restrain but when it was evident that he would be unable to obtain cover he elected to allow the gelding to stride forward to the lead near the 1100m. Stewards accepted the explanations of both riders as they were of the view that the racing manners of their respective mounts contributed to the way in which both horses were ridden.
A post-race veterinary examination of FRIDAY NIGHTS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
