Race 1: THE B105 HOT30 1MW H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Lotseventy 2nd – Paris Boy 3rd – River Lad 4th – Falls Creek
MAGNUM FORTY FOUR (B. El-Issa) began awkwardly.
Passing the 600m MAGNUM FORTY FOUR improved on to the heels of LEGAL STAR (J. Holder) and blundered.
Near the 100m MAGNUM FORTY FOUR was disappointed for clear running between AGENT BLUE (J. Kropp) and RIVER LAD (E. Wilkinson).
Approaching the 100m FALLS CREEK (J. Bowditch) was inconvenienced when tightened for room by LOTSEVENTY (L. Cassidy), which shifted in when not quite clear. L. Cassidy was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in future.
J. Kropp, the rider of AGENT BLUE, was questioned regarding the performance of that gelding. J. Kropp explained that AGENT BLUE travelled comfortably in the lead until placed under pressure in the home straight and failed to finish the race off as expected. J. Kropp added that in his opinion AGENT BLUE seems to be better suited on rain-affected tracks.
Race 2: THE FIFI & JULES QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Show A Prince 2nd – Aquatorial 3rd – Our Hand Of Faith 4th – Gesticulation
SPURTASTIC (Michael Palmer) and WITCHES LIPS (S. Traecey) were slow to begin.
Near the 900m GESTICULATION (P. Hammersley) had to be steadied off the heels of OLYMPIA'S FLAME (E. Wilkinson), resulting in GESTICULATION shifting out and making contact with TRUMP (B. El-Issa), forcing that runner wider on the track.
AQUATORIAL (B. Stewart) raced three wide without cover throughout the event. TRUMP also raced wide throughout the event.
After passing the 700m OUR HAND OF FAITH (M. Wood), when racing greenly, shifted in and away from SHOW A PRINCE (S. Galloway) and made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.
Near the 400m OUR HAND OF FAITH, which continued to race greenly, had to be restrained to avoid the heels of OLYMPIA'S FLAME before shifting out in order to improve.
After passing the 200m GESTICULATION shifted out and bumped TRUMP.
After passing the 100m SHOW A PRINCE (S. Galloway) shifted in under pressure and inconvenienced AQUATORIAL. S. Galloway was advised to make a greater effort to stop riding and straighten his mounts in the future.
When questioned regarding the performance of WITCHES LIPS, rider S. Traecey reported that after beginning awkwardly the filly was reluctant to stride out in the early stages of the event, however began to respond to his riding shortly after entering the home straight. He added that he was held up for clear running over the concluding stages when awkwardly placed at the heels of GESTICULATION. S. Traecey conceded that he may have erred in not shifting to the outside of the heels of TRUMP when making ground passing the 200m, which would have afforded him an uninterrupted run to the finish. Stewards agreed with jockey Traecey’s concession but in all the circumstances did not take any further action.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Palmer regarding the performance of SPURTASTIC. M. Palmer explained that the gelding travelled well to the 500m where it seemed at that point to resent racing in restricted room to the inside of AQUATORIAL. He added that SPURTASTIC did not sprint when placed under pressure upon entering the home straight, however still worked to the line fairly and was not entirely disappointing. Trainer C. Williamson was disappointed with the performance of the gelding as leading into today’s race it had worked very well. He undertook to report to stewards anything that comes to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SPURTASTIC revealed no abnormalities.
Race 3: THE HAMISH & ANDY OPEN H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Fangles 2nd – General Secretary 3rd – Kneel And Raise 4th - Crossthestart
IN REHEARSAL (E. Wilkinson) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1100m CHANGING EYES (J. Holder) was tightened for room between IN REHEARSAL, which shifted out slightly, and CHARMING ROGUE (M. Wood), which shifted in.
ONE LICKETY SPLIT (S. Traecey), IN REHEARSAL and CHANGING EYES raced wide throughout.
Near the 600m CHANGING EYES and IN REHEARSAL bumped.
CROSSTHESTART (C. Munce) was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn and again was unable to obtain clear running over the final 100m and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
On return to scale apprentice M. Wood stated that CHARMING ROGUE refused to settle in the early stages and for this reason he shifted wider on the track and rode that gelding forward to obtain the position outside of the leader near the 800m.
S. Traecey, the rider of ONE LICKETY SPLIT, which performed below expectations, explained that the horse travelled comfortably despite racing wide but was disappointing in its finishing effort when placed under pressure from the 400m.
Trainer S. Jones was questioned regarding the improved performance of FANGLES today. Mr Jones explained that at its most recent start FANGLES led and was pressured during the race and weakend in the home straight. Mr Jones added that FANGLES has worked well but he has kept it fresh since its last start and in his opinion being able to obtain cover behind the leaders today was the reason for FANGLES being able to finish the race off strongly.
Race 4: LABBY, CAMILLA & STAV CLASS 6 PLATE - 1630m
1st – Craquelure 2nd – Mr Shadow Boxer 3rd – Mr Nicholas 4th – Joyeux Joy
Trainer K. Schweida was fined $200 under LR. 67 for failing to declare P. Hammersley as the rider of GO FOREST GO by the prescribed time.
Trainer K. Schweida advised that from the wide barrier GO FOREST GO (P. Hammersley) would be ridden in a forward position today if possible. The horse was ridden accordingly.
JUST A PICCOLO (J. Bowditch) knuckled over on jumping away.
MR NICHOLAS (K. Wharton) and CRAQUELURE (C. Munce) were tightened on jumping away between BANANA KICK (R. McMahon), which began awkwardly, and GLORIETTA (B. El-Issa), which shifted in.
Both FIORI (M. Wood) and STRIKING ROSE (J. Taylor) raced wide in the early stages until near the 1000m.
Approaching the 300m GLORIETTA shifted in away from STRIKING ROSE and made heavy contact with REGAL GAZE (E. Wilkinson).
Passing the 200m GLORIETTA was obliged to alter course to the outside of JOYEUX JOY (J. Wood) in order to improve.
Near the 100m GLORIETTA again became momentarily awkward at the heels of JOYEUX JOY when that runner shifted out slightly under pressure.
Following his ride in Race 4 jockey B. El-Issa was examined by the Club’s doctor and cleared to fulfil his engagement in Race 5.
Race 5: HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUDY HALLS 0MW H’CAP - 1020m
1st – Mini Maizing 2nd – Mondean 3rd – Cyclone Brad 4th – Double Image
As apprentice M. Speers was to be overweight, apprentice T. Huxham was substituted as the rider of PRINCE LIONHEART. Apprentice Speers was fined $100 under AR. 120(b).
DOUBLE IMAGE (J. Holder) was slow to begin.
PEGUNNY ROY (M. Hellyer) and ALPHA STAR (C. Munce) made contact at the start.
MORCOMBE (S. Bogenhuber) jumped away awkwardly.
Approaching the 900m ALPHA STAR shifted out which resulted in BILLIE BLUE GUM (L. Cassidy) being tightened and making heavy contact with the hind quarters of STOP LYING (J. Bowditch), forcing that runner inwards. STOP LYING then shifted in and away from GORM THE OLD (M. Wood), which resulted in further tightening to BILLIE BLUE GUM.
C. Munce, the rider of ALPHA STAR, was was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of CYCLONE BRAD (B. El-Issa), resulting in CYCLONE BRAD having to be restrained to avoid the heels of ALPHA STAR. C. Munce’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 2 April, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 14 April 2011.
After passing the 800m BILLIE BLUE GUM commenced to race fiercely and shifted out taking DOUBLE IMAGE wider on the track.
Approaching the 600m CYCLONE BRAD, when overracing at the heels of STOP LYING, shifted in despite the efforts of its rider and tightened the running of GORM THE OLD.
DOUBLE IMAGE raced wide throughout.
S. Galloway, the rider of MINI MAIZING, was issued with a severe reprimand under AR. 137(a) for allowing his mount to shift out near the 300m when insufficiently clear of CYCLONE BRAD, resulting in CYCLONE BRAD having to be eased and alter course to the inside of MINI MAIZING.
MORCOMBE was held up and unable to obtain clear running for a major part of the home straight.
STOP LYING hung in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
Following his ride in Race 5, jockey B. El-Issa was examined by the Club’s doctor and stood down from his remaining engagements in Races 6 and 8. Riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
When questioned regarding the performance of BILLIE BLUE GUM, L. Cassidy explained that he raced in restricted room rounding the first turn to the inside of STOP LYING and following this the mare raced fiercely for some distance in the middle stages. L. Cassidy further stated that in his opinion BILLIE BLUE GUM’s performance was not entirely disappointing in the home straight considering its waywardness. A post-race veterinary examination of BILLIE BLUE GUM revealed no abnormality.
A post-race veterinary examination of ALPHA STAR revealed no abnormality.
Stewards intend to interview trainer T. Dougall regarding the seemingly improved performance of MINI MAIZING today as compared to its previous starts.
Race 6: SUBIACO HAIR F&M CLASS 6 PLATE - 1200m
1st – Jasminka 2nd – Geblitzt 3rd – Just Been Lucky 4th – Alberton Park
ASHMA’S GOLD, which reared over in the barriers, was declared a late scratching at 3.22 p.m. on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on ASHMA’S GOLD be refunded with deductions of 3 cents in the dollar on the face value of win and place tickets to apply. Trainer B. Herne was advised that he must obtain 2 further barrier certificates for ASHMA’S GOLD prior to its next start. JUST BEEN LUCKY (C. Munce), which was drawn in the adjoining barrier, also underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
GEBLITZT (R. McMahon) was tightened on jumping away between DELTARARA (J. Kropp) and BEVAGNA (M. Hellyer), both of which shifted ground.
JUST BEEN LUCKY began awkwardly.
BELLETRIST (J. Wood) was slow to begin.
SPANISH FLING (M. Radecker) overraced in the early stages.
ALBERTON PARK (B. Stewart) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Near the 350m BIANCA JEWEL (P. Hammersley), when held up for clear running, shifted in and bumped JUST BEEN LUCKY. BIANCA JEWEL then shifted out to the outside of the heels of CARRY TO FORTUNE (M. Wood), which shifted in slightly under pressure and made contact with GEBLITZT, resulting in GEBLITZT becoming unbalanced. GEBLITZT then shifted wider on the track in order to improve.
Stewards issued a charge of careless riding against apprentice M. Wood, the rider of CARRY TO FORTUNE, in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear of BIANCA JEWEL, resulting in BIANCA JEWEL having to be checked when taken out towards SPANISH FLING, which was tightened for room. Stewards issued a further charge of careless riding against B. Stewart, the rider of ALBERTON PARK, in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of SPANISH FLING, resulting in SPANISH FLING being checked and BIANCA JEWEL being tightened for room. After considering further submissions from apprentice M. Wood, his master Mr K. Schweida, and B. Stewart, stewards elected not to proceed with the charges as there was some doubt as to whether BIANCA JEWEL had fully obtained a run between CARRY TO FORTUNE and SPANISH FLING prior to CARRY TO FORTUNE shifting out, and further that ALBERTON PARK had shifted in despite a significant effort from B. Stewart to prevent the tightening.
Race 7: BOLLINGER C,G&E CLASS 6 PLATE - 1200m
1st – I’m Ruthless 2nd – Captain Clayton 3rd – Blue Jupiter 4th – Bullet Proof
Connections advised that CAPTAIN CLAYTON (B. Stewart) would be ridden towards the rear of the field.
KALKIE KANE (J. Wood) began awkwardly and shifted in making contact with AQUA CALDA (P. Hammersley).
DAI KON (E. Wilkinson) shifted out shortly after the start , forcing I’M RUTHLESS (C. Munce), MR ORIENT (S. Galloway) and HEZA FLASHMAN (M. Hellyer) wider.
Near the 1000m CAPTAIN CLAYTON, when being restrained, shifted in across the heels of BULLET PROOF (S. Scriven), which resulted in BULLET PROOF shifting out slightly and CAPTAIN CLAYTON clipping the heels of BULLET PROOF and becoming unbalanced.
Near the 900m BLACKWOODS CHOICE (J. Holder) had to be checked when tightened for room by MONASHEE WARRIOR (M. Wood) which was taken in by BLUE JUPITER (L. Cassidy), which also was taken in slightly by CULTURE WARRIOR (Matthew Palmer) which after being restrained off the heels of BULLET PROOF, shifted in marginally when racing in restricted room to the inside of CAPTAIN CLAYTON. MR ORIENT, I’M RUTHLESS and HEZA FLASHMAN, which were trailing, were all inconvenienced as a result of this incident.
CULTURE WARRIOR and CAPTAIN CLAYTON raced wide for the majority of the event.
Approaching the 800m CULTURE WARRIOR had to be restrained off the heels of BULLET PROOF. CULTURE WARRIOR then shifted out slightly and was then checked off the heels of CAPTAIN CLAYTON which shifted in slightly. MR ORIENT, which was following, also had to be checked and shifted wider on the track.
Approaching the 100m MONASHEE WARRIOR and AQUA CALDA were tightened for room when racing to the inside of DAI KON, which hung out, and HEZA FLASHMAN, which attempted a run to the inside of BLUE JUPITER where doubtful racing room existed.
Following the running of this race stewards received a report from Dr M. Lenz that BULLET PROOF had suffered a bleeding attack during the event. Stewards interviewed trainer L. Gough who disputed the findings of the veterinary officer and as such the matter was adjourned to enable stewards to make further inquiries and investigations into the matter.
Stewards intend to open an inquiry into apprentice J. Wood’s riding of KALKIE KANE over the final 300m.
Race 8: SKY RACING QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1350m
1st – In A Tangle 2nd – From London 3rd – Snip ‘N’ Duck 4th – Steel Zip
FROM LONDON (S. Galloway), STARLIN (S. Seamer), DRIVING REIGN (B. Stewart) and IN A TANGLE (J. Wood) were all slow to begin.
SNIP ‘N’ DUCK (P. Hammersley) got its head in the air and overraced at the heels of PARIS BLU (S. Scriven) approaching the 800m. SHOW ME AN ACE (E. Wilkinson), which was trailing, had to be steadied as a consequence.
Leaving the 600m FROM LONDON shifted out to improve and in doing so forced SHOW ME AN ACE wider on the track.
CRAIGELLACHIE (Matthew Palmer) was held up when unable to obtain clear running rounding the home turn and in the home straight and went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
SHOW ME AN ACE shifted out near the 300m and bumped REQUESTED (L. Cassidy).
CASH 'N' STYLE (R. McMahon) was tightened for room after passing the 100m when racing between STARLIN and NOROCOS (C. Munce) which shifted in and away from FROM LONDON (S. Galloway). Stewards acknowledged that NOROCOS was tiring at the time but nonetheless reminded C. Munce of his obligations to at all times attempt to keep his mounts on a straight course.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of NOROCOS, C. Munce was of the opinion that the horse failed to run out the distance of today’s race.
Stewards questioned trainer B. Guy regarding the seemingly improved performance of IN A TANGLE (J. Wood). B. Guy stated that IN A TANGLE raced well when it resumed from a spell at its most recent start when it settled back in the field and made steady ground in the home straight. Mr Guy added that IN A TANGLE has worked well and he was confident of a forward showing today over a further distance than last start.
SNIP ‘N’ DUCK lost its near hind plate in running.
