Race 1: ORMISTON COLLEGE OLD COLLEGIAN BM90 H’CAP - 1615m
1st – Topping 2nd – Rockdale 3rd – They Won’t Last 4th – Russian Jar

THEY WON’T LAST (T. Bell) overraced at the heels of TOPPING (J. Byrne) for a considerable distance during the middle stages of the race.

Near the 500m SOMMERSEA DRIVE (J. Kropp), which had been hanging out, shifted in taking ROCKDALE (L. Rolls) in on to MOLOTOV (J. Taylor), which had to be checked. TOPPING, which was following, was forced to shift outwards to avoid MOLOTOV, and in doing so took RUSSIAN JAR (L. Cassidy) significantly wider on the track. Stewards were of the view that the racing manners of SOMMERSEA DRIVE were the catalyst for the incident and due to this took no action against any rider.

Apprentice J. Kropp reported that in the early stages SOMMERSEA DRIVE raced fiercely when challenged by ROCKDALE for the lead. Apprentice Kropp added that when he was able to consolidate the leading position, SOMMERSEA DRIVE then settled, however commenced to hang out and did so for the remainder of the event. Stewards informed the trainer of SOMMERSEA DRIVE, Mr Trevor Miller, that the horse would be required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey L. Cassidy in regards to the seemingly disappointing performance of RUSSIAN JAR. L. Cassidy stated that the horse travelled comfortably in the early stages, however when the pace steadied midway down the back straight, the horse began to overrace. Jockey Cassidy added that whilst he was taken wider on the track when a horse suffered interference forward of him near the 500m, RUSSIAN JAR did not accelerate as he expected and proved disappointing in the run to the finish. L. Cassidy further stated that on return to scale the horse’s respiration rate was unusually elevated, in his view, and felt that the horse would take benefit from its second-up performance. Trainer C. Waller’s stable representative Mr A. Briffa was unable to offer an explanation for the performance apart from stating that the gelding was unusually stirred up in the enclosure today.

Race 2: BRAND & SLATER OPEN H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Belltone 2nd – Save A Buck 3rd – What Happenedhenry 4th – Anyways

As R. McMahon was to be overweight, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of TISANI BOY. R. McMahon was fined $100.

BELLTONE (M. Hellyer) and SAVE A BUCK (J. Byrne) were slow to begin.

Shortly after the start and on several occasions when racing erratically in the early stages, TISANI BOY (J. Taylor) shifted out and made contact with WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY (L. Cassidy).

WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY laid in over the concluding stages.

TISANI BOY raced erratically throughout the event and after returning to scale J. Taylor reported that the horse got its tongue over the bit during the race.

Race 3: BOQ CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Mington 2nd – Sway To Go 3rd – The Barracks 4th – Go Forest Go

Trainer G. Cornish was fined $100 for presenting BELLAVONANE (J. Taylor) to race without winkers, which is part of the horse’s normal racing gear.

There was a short delay to correct weight whilst stewards viewed the head-on footage of the start to satisfy themselves that PURETTAN (L. Rolls) had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the film, stewards were of the view that PURETTAN missed the start as a result of its own fractious behaviour and therefore correct weight was semaphored.

GO FOREST GO (T. Bell) was slow to begin.

G. Colless, the rider of THE BARRACKS, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of DULBYDILLA (A. Spinks), resulting in DULBYDILLA having to be checked to avoid the heels of THE BARRACKS, and GUISSEPINO (E. Wilkinson), which was trailing, having to be steadied. G. Colless’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 10 September, and expire at midnight on Friday, 23 September 2011.

Leaving the 700m DULBYDILLA (A. Spinks) improved on to the heels of THE BARRACKS (G. Colless) and shifted out making contact with MINGTON (J. Byrne).

Rounding the home turn both GO FOREST GO and BELLAVONANE were unable to improve due to being forced to race in restricted room between GUISSEPINO (E. Wilkinson) and JUNGLE HEAT (R. McMahon), which was racing erratically.

Near the 300m TOUCH IT (B. Looker), which was inclined to hang out, and MINGTON, which had commenced to hang in when placed under pressure, made contact resulting in TOUCH IT becoming unbalanced. MINGTON continued to lay in under pressure for the remainder of the event.

A post-race veterinary examination of THE BARRACKS revealed the gelding had been galloped on on the off hind leg.

Jockey R. McMahon stated that when the pace steadied in the early stages, JUNGLE HEAT commenced to hang out and proved difficult to ride until entering the home straight. The veterinary surgeon reported that JUNGLE HEAT had an ulcer on its offside cheek. Trainer B. Smith will be advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness for JUNGLE HEAT prior to its next start.

Race 4: THE ROHRIG GROUP QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1110m
1st – State Of Wealth 2nd – Morning Captain 3rd – Tomcat 4th – March To Victory

Trainer B. Guy advised that FLORIDA FELLOW would be ridden off the pace today. The horse was ridden accordingly.

The start was delayed when SLYSERA (B. Looker) was reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Jockey Looker had to dismount and the horse be led to the barriers. Trainer R. Macrae was advised subsequent to the event that SLYSERA must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to start again.

Approaching the 700m MORNING CAPTAIN (Matthew Palmer) had to be steadied when tightened for room by AUGUST BISHOP (J. Brown), which shifted in when not clear. Apprentice J. Brown was severely reprimanded and advised to afford riders more clearance when crossing in future. A short distance later MORNING CAPTAIN, which was overracing, improved on to the heels of AUGUST BISHOP and had to be steadied.

Jockey G. Colless reported that rounding the home turn MARCH TO VICTORY commenced to lay in and this resulted in him remaining to the inside of CALCULATION (L. Cassidy) when his initial plan had been to get MARCH TO VICTORY to the outside in the straight as the horse has a capacity to finish its races off very well. G. Colless added that after applying the whip in a backhand fashion in the early part of the straight MARCH TO VICTORY continued to lay in which necessitated him changing his whip over to the right hand. MARCH TO VICTORY then raced truly and made some ground over the concluding stages. Jockey Colless indicated to stewards that connections would now consider giving the horse a break from racing. Trainer A. Bailey confirmed that the gelding will now be sent for an immediate spell.

The veterinary surgeon reported that MORNING CAPTAIN pulled up with post-race distress.

J. Byrne was provided with the opportunity of explaining the performance of FLORIDA FELLOW. J. Byrne stated that the colt travelled comfortably until asked for an effort to improve approaching the 500m and was immediately under pressure and he was disappointed in its inability to finish the race off in the straight. Jockey Byrne further stated that at its previous preparation FLORIDA FELLOW did not perform well first up.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey L. Cassidy regarding the performance of CALCULATION. Jockey Cassidy explained that the colt sweated up badly prior to the start today and did not show the same speed in the early stages as when it was successful at the Gold Coast on 27 August. L. Cassidy added that CALCULATION did not quicken as expected when placed under pressure in the home straight and in his opinion has come to the end of its current preparation. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith confirmed that the colt will be sent for a spell.

Race 5: HANRICK CURRAN CLASS 6 H’CAP - 2200m
1st – Our Cannavaro 2nd – Jedi Starfighter 3rd – Smuggler’s Inn 4th – Shamardashing

As R. McMahon was to be overweight, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of SMUGGLER’S INN. R. McMahon was fined $100.

SIR PRESIDENTE (Matthew Palmer) and BAHA (A. Butler) raced wide in the early stages.

ROCK RULES (K. Wharton) raced wide for the majority of the event.

JEDI STARFIGHTER (M. Hellyer) raced wide from a point leaving the 800m.

From passing the 700m until near the 500m SHAMARDASHING (T. Bell) was held up and unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of the tiring BAHA. SUNSHINE ANGEL (S. Seamer), which was trailing, was also unable to improve during this section of the race. Stewards advised R. Cole, the trainer of BAHA, that the horse would now be barred from metropolitan class racing until it establishes provincial form.

SHAMARDASHING laid in under pressure in the straight.

Race 6: NOM DE JEU 1MW H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Paris Blu 2nd – Machination 3rd – Brigadoon Jack 4th – Aquatorial

As apprentice B. Wallace failed to arrive on course, stewards permitted Matthew Palmer to replace him as the rider of SHAOS when no other apprentice was availble. Stewards intend to interview apprentice Wallace regarding this matter at a later date.

AQUATORIAL (B. Looker) shifted out at the start and made contact with DIAGO (G. Colless).

PARIS BLU (M. Hellyer) and UNSUPERVISED (L. Cassidy) bumped on jumping away.

AQUATORIAL, SYMPOSIUM (J. Taylor) and MISS CUTIE (T. Bell) raced wide throughout.

SHAOS (Matthew Palmer) hung in under pressure rounding the home turn.

Rider L. Cassidy and trainer K. Schweida were afforded the opportunity of explaining the disappointing performance of UNSUPERVISED. Jockey Cassidy stated that he had to apply continual pressure to the horse to hold a position in the race and rounding the home turn the horse was immediately under pressure and did not respond to his riding in the straight. K. Schweida voiced his disappointment at the run of UNSUPERVISED and the only explanation he could offer was that the horse has shown throughout its career to be less than effective on rain-affected tracks.

G. Colless reported that DIAGO hung out for a major part of the race, placing him at a distinct disadvantage. Stable representative for trainer L. Birchley indicated that connections would now consider giving the horse a break from racing in view of its performance today.

Race 7: ORMISTON COLLEGE F&M H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Funtantes 2nd – Alberton Park 3rd – Aladah 4th – Tafeer

JUST BEEN LUCKY (T. Bell), SKY EFFORT (Matthew Palmer) and LILLEELAVEE (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.

Apprentice T. Bell, the rider of JUST BEEN LUCKY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of SKY EFFORT, resulting in that runner being unnecessarily crowded for a considerable distance, having to be checked near the 700m and losing its rightful running. Apprentice T. Bell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Thursday, 15 September, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 25 September 2011.

Race 8: ORMISTON COLLEGE SPORTING PREMIERS 2011 BM85 H’CAP - 1010m
1st – Haizum 2nd – Monashee Dancer 3rd – Pointe Dancer 4th – Nickiera

Trainer P. Kings was fined $100 under LR. 67 for failing to declare A. Spinks as the rider of LIGER by the prescribed time.

As apprentice B. Wallace failed to arrive on course, P. Hammersley was substituted as the rider of MONASHEE DANCER when no apprentice was available. Apprentice B. Wallace has been stood down by stewards until he can be interviewed in respect to his failure to arrive to fulfil his engagements today.

POINTE DANCER (R. Wiggins) jumped in the air as the start was effected and lost ground.

HAIZUM (B. Looker) and LIGER (A. Spinks) were tightened for room on jumping away between SEEK AND FIND (M. Hellyer) and RED WINE BWANA (J. Byrne), both of which shifted ground.

Apprentice T. Bell reported that WONDERFUL LASS was unable to keep in touch with the main body of the field despite his urgings in the early stages but finished the race off strongly and was impeded for clear running momentarily inside the final 50m.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Hellyer and trainer K. Wood in respect of the seemingly disappointing performance of SEEK AND FIND. M. Hellyer stated that the horse began only fairly but he was able to get into a nice position one off the fence and the horse travelled well for him during the early and middle stages. Apprentice Hellyer added that upon straightening he felt SEEK AND FIND was travelling well enough to win, but only accelerated for a short distance before tiring badly over the concluding stages. Trainer Kelso Wood stated that the horse was coming back slightly in distance but had been freshened up in preparation for that and he expected the horse to race well. Mr Wood voiced his extreme disappointment at the performance of SEEK AND FIND and advised stewards that he would have his stable veterinary surgeon attend the horse immediately following its return to the stables. Mr Wood undertook to advise stewards of any findings of his private veterinary surgeon. A post-race veterinary examination of SEEK AND FIND revealed no significant abnormalities at the time of examination.

Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding his riding of NICKIERA in the home straight, particularly whether he had considered improving into a run that became available near the 300m between SEEK AND FIND and RED WINE BWANA. G. Colless stated that he had been instructed that NICKIERA is best suited when it is able to get to the outside of runners to enable an unimpeded run to the finish. He added that he was unable to shift to the outside of SEEK AND FIND upon straightening as HAIZUM (B. Looker) had improved quickly to his outside and following this he became awkward at the heels of SEEK AND FIND for some distance before shifting to the outside of that runner and finishing the race off well. Trainer T. Thomas confirmed that the gelding is best suited when able to finish its races off down the outside in the home straight. Stewards accepted the explanation of G. Colless.
