Race 1: KIRKS BENCHMARK 85 H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Someday 2nd – Gunner Knox 3rd – Marked 4th – Jungle Heat
On arrival at the barriers apprentice K. Matheson (DE DOZEN STARS) requested the veterinary surgeon examine the gelding as he believed the horse was short in its action and was changing stride in its preliminary. Whilst the veterinary surgeon was of the opinion that the horse was suitable to race, taking into account the concerns expressed by apprentice Matheson, stewards ordered the withdrawal of DE DOZEN STARS at 12.43 p.m. A veterinary examination of DE DOZEN STARS after the event revealed the gelding to have hind limb lameness. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on DE DOZEN STARS be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
0 cent in the dollar for the Win – SOMEDAY
1 cent in the dollar for place of winner – SOMEDAY
8 cents in the dollar for 2nd place – GUNNER KNOX
14 cents in the dollar for 3rd place – MARKED
SO SO SURE (A. Allen) and CHORAL (T. Harrison) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m TYCOON’S PRIDE (A. Butler), which was overracing, shifted in taking SOMEDAY (M. Cahill) in on to GUNNER KNOX (B. Stewart), which had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SOMEDAY.
TYCOON’S PRIDE continued to overrace until approaching the home turn.
SO SO SURE raced three wide throughout without cover.
At the entrance to the straight SOMEDAY attempted to improve between BLOW A KISS (R. Hurdle) and JUNGLE HEAT (R. Myers), where there was insufficient room and as a result made contact with JUNGLE HEAT, resulting in JUNGLE HEAT shifting out and brushing SO SO SURE.
A post-race veterinary examination of BLOW A KISS revealed no abnormalities.
Race 2: MOUNT FRANKLIN SPARKLING OPEN H’CAP - 2000m
1st – Grey Assignment 2nd – Topping 3rd – Magic Tartan 4th – Cash Attack
After racing outside the leader in the early stages FROZONE (T. Harrison) commenced to pull hard until after leaving the 800m.
After leaving the 700m CASH ATTACK (P. Cullen) improved quickly to the outside of GREY ASSIGNMENT (R. Myers). GREY ASSIGNMENT then attempted to shift out and when doing so made contact with CASH ATTACK.
Race 3: JIM BEAM QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Reflectance 2nd – The Storeman 3rd – Better Than Ready 4th – Grayson Square
TOM’S LUCK (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start JUST POKENALONG (G. Killen) shifted in and made contact with GRAYSON SQUARE (B. Stewart).
Near the 800m THE STOREMAN (M. Vance) had to be steadied away from the heels of BETTER THAN READY (K. Matheson).
TOM’S LUCK raced wide from the 800m and then hung out rounding the home turn.
GRAYSON SQUARE hung out on the home turn, and REFLECTANCE (M. Cahill) also hung out, which allowed THE STOREMAN to improve to that runner’s inside.
Apprentice K. Matheson reported at scale that although it was not his intention to lead, after beginning well BETTER THAN READY commenced to overrace and he had difficulty restraining the colt rounding the first turn.
A swab sample was taken from BETTER THAN READY. Trainer K. Schweida reported subsequent to the event that BETTER THAN READY had been galloped on on the off hind leg.
A post-race veterinary examination of TOM’S LUCK revealed the horse to be slightly distressed.
A post-race veterinary examination of REFLECTANCE revealed the colt to have thumps with a mild degree of heat exhaustion.
Race 4: COCA-COLA F&M H’CAP - 1350m
1st - Whateverwhenever 2nd – Koranovsky 3rd – Cindarockinrella 4th – Beggin
Approaching the 100m SEA MARVISTA (M. Vance) had to be steadied away from the heels of FOR MIA (M. Hellyer), which shifted out.
Inside the 100m KORANOVSKY (J. Byrne) shifted in tightening the running of CINDAROCKINRELLA (J. Lloyd).
M. Cahill (BEGGIN) reported at scale that his saddle shifted near the 250m, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
Apprentice R. Myers reported that SAY NO MORE could not sprint with the 61kg weight today when placed under pressure at the entrance to the straight, however in her opinion finished the race off well. A post-race veterinary examination of SAY NO MORE revealed the horse to be mildly heat stressed.
Race 5: CANADIAN CLUB BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Bang On 2nd – Onetimeatbandcamp 3rd – Rockdale 4th – Revitalise
Apprentice R. Hurdle was fined $200 under AR. 92(12) for claiming only 2kg of his 3kg allowance on BLOW A KISS (Race 1) and SAINT SAIALA.
Correct weight was delayed to afford apprentice M. Vance, the rider of 4th placegetter REVITALISE, the opportunity of viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether she had grounds to lodge an objection against ROCKDALE (T. Harrison) being declared 3rd. After viewing the video with trainer D. Murphy, apprentice Vance indicated that she did not wish to lodge a protest and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.
ALVITAS (G. Colless) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
ONETIMEATBANDCAMP (A. Allen) shifted in abruptly on jumping, taking REVITALISE (M. Vance) in on to GOLD SHEARS (G. Cooksley), which had to be steadied. At the same stage SAINT SAIALA (R. Hurdle) shifted out inconveniencing BANG ON (R. Myers).
ROCKDALE blundered shortly after the start.
Shortly after entering the straight REVITALISE improved into a narrow run to the inside of ROCKDALE. ROCKDALE then shifted in slightly, inconveniencing REVITALISE near the 250m.
ALVITAS was eased out of the event in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ALVITAS revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer K. Fleming was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for ALVITAS prior to its next start.
P. Hammersley reported that NOBLE JESTER was very disappointing and at no stage travelled well. He added he has suggested to connections that they make application to put the blinkers back on the horse for its next start.
Race 6: L’ACADEMIE HOTEL E&G CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Triskele 2nd – Silver Command 3rd – Reassemble 4th – Daytime Dazzler
As R. Wiggins was to be overweight, stewards permitted apprentice R. Myers to replace him as the rider of TICTACS when no senior rider was available at the weight. R. Wiggins was fined $200.
CHANDRA (R. McMahon) and GLOW HEART (M. Hellyer) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 800m HOROSCOPES (T. Harrison) was tightened for room by DAYTIME DAZZLER (G. Killen), which was taken in by FAVELA STAR (K. Matheson), which shifted in. Apprentice Matheson was reprimanded and advised to be fully clear when shifting ground. Stewards acknowledged that the racing manners of both DAYTIME DAZZLER and HOROSCOPES had contributed to the incident.
MAJOR CASH (K. Yoshida) raced wide throughout.
HOROSCOPES hung out after leaving the 800m and continued to do so until the entrance to the straight.
Near the 50m REASSEMBLE (A. Allen) had to be steadied away from the heels of FAVELA STAR which shifted out.
Race 7: GUSTO DA GIANNI MARES CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Gypsy Pearl 2nd – Sky Effort 3rd – Funny Falve 4th – Falvelina
EMPRESS ME (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly.
BELLANTINA (P. Hammersley) and MERRYANNA (M. Vance) were slow to begin.
PRODUCT (K. Matheson) raced wide without cover throughout.
Near the 500m PRETTY COMPOSED (B. Stewart) had to be steadied away from the heels of AROUND THE WORLD (A. Allen).
G. Cooksley, the rider of SKY EFFORT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that after leaving the 300m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of PRODUCT, resulting in PRODUCT being taken in on to AROUND THE WORLD, resulting in both horses being tightened for room and AROUND THE WORLD losing its position when taken in on to PRETTY COMPOSED. G. Cooksley’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Monday, 1 October, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 14 October 2012.
BELLANTINA was held up rounding the home turn and did not obtain clear running until the 150m.
EMPRESS ME was held up in the straight and did not obtain clear running at any stage.
Race 8: THE COFFEE CLUB BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP - 1010m
1st – Plateau Gold 2nd – Pure Purrfection 3rd – Cryon 4th – Snippets Secret
Making the first turn FOREST REDGUM (R. Hurdle) had to be momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of PLATEAU GOLD (C. McPherson), which shifted in. Apprentice McPherson was reminded of her obligation to be fully clear when shifting ground.
Near the 800m INVENTORY (K. Matheson) shifted in and made contact with VAARWEL (G. Colless).
Approaching the 600m HIGH ON OCTANE (J. Byrne) had to be checked off the heels of VAARWEL, which commenced to lose ground. After leaving the 600m HIGH ON OCTANE again had to be checked off the heels of VAARWEL when HIGH ON OCTANE laid in.
CRYON (T. Harrison) hung out rounding the home turn.
SNIPPETS SECRET (A. Allen) was held up rounding the home turn.
HIGH ON OCTANE laid in under pressure in the straight.
G. Colless reported at scale that VAARWEL was making a respiratory noise throughout the race and had lost coordination and as a result he eased the horse down in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of VAARWEL revealed the gelding to have a delayed post-race recovery. Trainer T. Edmonds will be interviewed regarding the horse’s post-race recovery.
