From SCTC 20.1.13 – Race 6: Following the poor performance of ELECTROJET, trainer D. Steinbeck advised that the horse was subsequently diagnosed as suffering from colic and to be dehydrated. In the opinion of the stewards, these conditions explained the horse’s poor performance and no further action was taken.
Race 1: MOUNT FRANKLIN SPARKLING MAIDEN PLATE - 2140m
1st – Phantom Caller 2nd – Complete Secret 3rd – Craiglea Calipso 4th – Cuba Libre
As G. Cooksley was indisposed, K. Wharton was substituted as the rider of PHANTOM CALLER.
SILKEN ENDURANCE was a late scratching at 8.55 a.m. for veterinary reasons.
The start of this race was delayed when KING OF FLORENCE (J. Lloyd) had to be resaddled behind the barriers.
KING OF FLORENCE was slow to begin.
MASSIE BELLE (T. Harrison) overraced in the early stages.
After passing the winning post on the first occasion STUCK WITH A FINE (S. Bogenhuber) commenced to hang out, making contact with KING OF FLORENCE and taking that runner much wider on the track. Trainer P. Facoory was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of STUCK WITH A FINE. Mr Facoory indicated that rider S. Bogenhuber had informed him that STUCK WITH A FINE got its tongue over the bit and he will apply a tongue tie in future starts.
A post-race veterinary examination of MASSIE BELLE, which compounded badly from the 800m, revealed the filly to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer M. Hemmings was advised that MASSIE BELLE will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start.
Race 2: LANDFILL LOGISTICS PTY LTD E&G MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Summers On The Run 2nd – Our Evolution 3rd – Platinum Spur 4th – Akbar
SUMMERS ON THE RUN (T. Bell) and KABOWD (R. McMahon) made heavy contact at the start, which resulted in KABOWD, shifting in and resulting in CHIEF SEATTLE (M. Vance) and AKBAR (T. Harrison) being severely hampered when crowded for room between KABOWD and OUR EVOLUTION (P. Schmidt), which also began awkwardly and shifted out.
Approaching the 700m PLATINUM SPUR (M. Speers) shifted in and made contact with the running rail, became unbalanced and shifted out making contact with CHIEF SEATTLE (M. Vance).
Race 3: GLENLOGAN PARK STUD F&M MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Rose Of Kentucky 2nd – Inside Page 3rd – Pinespun 4th – Dark Matter
As M. Gray was indisposed, L. Cheshire was substituted as the rider of DIAMOND TRAIL.
OPTIMISTIC ANGEL (T. Bell) sprawled at the start, shifted out and hampered HILLARY’S CLANG (M. Vance).
DIAMOND TRAIL (L. Cheshire) and LEFKADA ISLAND (G. Killen) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 600m ROCKIN’ ROZ (J. Lloyd) shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of DIAMOND TRAIL, resulting in that runner becoming unbalanced.
After passing the 200m PINESPUN (A. Allen) was held up and unable to improve. PINESPUN then became awkward on the heels of DIAMOND TRAIL near the 150m and had to alter course to the outside of that runner to obtain clear running.
Apprentice M. Vance was questioned regarding her riding of HILLARY’S CLANG over the final 400m. Apprentice Vance explained that in the early stages of the home straight she was unable to secure clear running between OPTIMISTIC ANGEL and SURLY TEMPLE (P. Schmidt). She added that when she obtained a narrow run near the 150m between ROCKIN’ ROZ and OPTIMISTIC ANGEL, HILLARY’S CLANG was reluctant to improve into that run when it had a tendency to shift away from the left-hand whip use of T. Bell, rider of OPTIMISTIC ANGEL. Apprentice Vance further added that when she was able to apply some pressure to the filly over the final stages, it worked to the line well. Trainer P. Facoory agreed with the comments of apprentice Vance and was satisfied with her riding in the home straight. Stewards accepted the explanation of apprentice Vance.
J. Lloyd, rider of ROCKIN’ ROZ, was reminded of his obligations to at all times ride his mounts out to the end of the race.
Race 4: TIMEFORM QTIS 3YO C&G MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
1st – Canny Be Famous 2nd – Punters Pride 3rd – Play Luck 4th – Tiger Jet
STATUE BRO (K. Wharton) and CANNY BE FAMOUS (P. Schmidt) were slow to begin.
Near the 700m PUNTERS PRIDE (T. Harrison) had to be steadied when RAPID HEARTBREAKER (G. Colless) shifted in slightly.
PLAY LUCK (T. Bell) hung in when placed under pressure over the final 300m.
Approaching the 200m MY RISKY (Matthew Palmer) shifted out under pressure and made contact with PLAY LUCK.
Apprentice A. Allen was asked to explain the riding tactics he employed on TIGER JET in the early stages of the race where from a wide barrier the horse was restrained to a rearward position. Apprentice Allen stated that he was instructed to attempt to begin well and settle the horse midfield with cover if possible, however TIGER JET began only fairly and as he was of the view that he would be caught wide, he elected to restrain to the rear of the field. He added that he lost contact with the main body of the field approaching the 900m when TIGER JET did not respond to his urgings. He further added that TIGER JET only began to travel comfortably from the 600m and made up steady ground in the home straight. He was of the opinion that TIGER JET will be better suited in races of a further distance than that of today’s event. Trainer R. Heathcote confirmed the instructions and explained that TIGER JET has been a difficult horse to ride throughout its career and in his opinion will benefit from being stepped up in distance.
J. Lloyd was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of STRATOJET.
C. Whitely reported that THE BLACK SUPERMAN was inclined to hang in for a major part of the race.
Race 5: YELLOWGLEN BENCHMARK 70 C,G&E H’CAP - 1350m
1st – In A Storm 2nd – Vacallo 3rd – Candente 4th – Jam Fancy
Correct weight was delayed to afford R. Wiggins, the rider of 2nd placegetter VACALLO, the opportunity of viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner IN A STORM (T. Harrison), alleging interference in the early stages of the home straight. After viewing the video, jockey Wiggins declined to lodge an objection.
FRACTIONS (M. Vance) was slow to begin.
Apprentice P. Schmidt, the rider of POWER RECEIVER, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 850m she attempted to shift her mount out around the heels of the leader BAZINSKY (G. Goold) where there was insufficient room to do so by virtue of JAM FANCY (M. Cahill) holding its one-wide position to the outside of POWER RECEIVER. This resulted in POWER RECEIVER making heavy contact with JAM FANCY, and when unable to obtain that run, having to shift back in towards the heels of BAZINSKY and having to be steadied. In this incident CANDENTE (L. Cassidy), which was following, also had to be steadied, and FRACTIONS (M. Vance) and IN A STORM, which were following CANDENTE, also had to be steadied and shift wider to avoid the heels of that runner. Apprentice Schmidt’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 30 January, and expire at midnight on Friday, 8 February 2013.
R. Wiggins, the rider of VACALLO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that over the final stages of the race he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of JAM FANCY, which had to be steadied to avoid the heels of VACALLO and was taken inwards on to POWER RECEIVER (P. Schmidt), which was tightened for room and made contact with the running rail. Jockey Wiggins’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Friday, 1 February, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 9 February 2013.

ANNIA FAUSTINA raced ungenerously when being restrained in the early stages.
JUST BETTY (A. Allen), when overracing near the 850m shifted out, resulting in SEA MARVISTA (G. Goold) being taken wider on the track. MARVISTA then raced wide throughout.
Over the concluding stages GOTTA BE LUCKY had to alter course to the inside of WITCHES WONDER (J. Byrne).
Race 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Bribie 2nd – Stop Lying 3rd – Patties Mate 4th – Triskele
TRISKELE (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 700m TRISKELE and ROSAGAZE (A. Allen) commenced to overrace and ROSAGAZE had to be restrained from the heels of BRIBIE (D. Browne) and shifted wider on the track.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice T. Harrison regarding the performance of CHORAL. Apprentice Harrison stated that she was instructed to ride the horse in a forward position if possible and when racing three wide after passing the 900m she was unable to muster the necessary speed to cross CATCH THE LIGHT (G. Colless) and obtain the position outside the leader, and as a result was obliged to remain three wide from that point. Stewards noted the explanation of apprentice Harrison. A post-race veterinary examination of CHORAL revealed no significant findings.
Race 8: WWW.BRC.COM.AU CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1650m
1st – Tycoon’s Heart 2nd – Yurrapendi 3rd – Kistamon 4th – Macedon

Apprentice A. Allen reported that RETUNE was not suited when the pace of the race was slow in the middle stages and RETUNE was unable to sprint when the pace quickened from the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination of RETUNE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
