GENERAL
As G. Colless was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: FLEURUS BM75 H’CAP - 2200m
GRAB THE LOOT (T. Harrison) overraced in the early stages and was inclined to hang out. As a result, apprentice Harrison allowed GRAB THE LOOT to stride forward passing the 1300m to obtain the lead near the 1100m.
After passing the 800m GRAB THE LOOT hung out when leading and proved difficult to ride.
A post-race veterinary examination of GRAB THE LOOT revealed that the mare had mouth ulcers.
The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that NO MORE BULL (M. Cahill) bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion on which the gelding has bled, it will be ineligible to start for 3 months, and before resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward.
Race 2: DELTA HOSPITALITY SUPPLIES F&M MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
LITTLE SNEAKY (M. Cahill) was examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers and passed fit to start.
Correct weight was delayed to enable T. Bell, the rider of 2nd placegetter SHARDAY, to view the stewards’ patrol footage to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner. After viewing the videos jockey Bell indicated that he did not wish to proceed.
MULTIPLICATION (B. Appo) was inconvenienced at the start when tightened for room between LITTLE SNEAKY and FORELOCK (R. Wiggins), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 500m SHARDAY had to be eased when disappointed for clear running to the inside of CROCODILE DANCER (V. Colgan).
Passing the 200m M. Cahill (LITTLE SNEAKY) dropped his whip.
CROCODILE DANCER was held up for clear running in the home straight and after passing the 200m had to be checked from the heels of BLUE MINI (L. Cassidy).
SHARDAY was unable to secure clear running in the home straight until approaching the 100m.
Trainer T. Gollan advised stewards that LITTLE SNEAKY will now be sent for a spell.
The veterinary surgeon reported that BLUE MINI (L. Cassidy) was galloped on on both hind legs.
Race 3: NORM LEGG MEMORIAL C,G&E MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
MALLEABLE (L. Cassidy) was examined behind the barriers by the veterinary surgeon and found to be lame in the off foreleg. As a result MALLEABLE was declared a late scratching at 12.50 pm. Trainer B. Dais will be advised that MALLEABLE will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on MALLEABLE be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
5 cents in the dollar for the Win #3
5 cents in the dollar for place of winner #3
5 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #8
5 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #1
POCOBOZ (P. Schmidt) overraced in the early stages.
Passing the 900m POCOBOZ shifted out and bumped PROSPECTING (A. Merritt), taking that runner wider.
Approaching the 500m POCOBOZ shifted out away PRINCE OF BELAIRE (T. Bell) and severely hampered PROSPECTING, again taking that runner wider.
Race 4: RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE SEQ CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1600m
Passing the 1200m HATZIS (D. Browne) dipped and lost ground. CASTLE EXPRESS (T. Bell), which was following, had to be steadied.
Rounding the home turn CASTLE EXPRESS became unbalanced when racing tight between HATZIS and CYCLONE AL (M. Vance), which shifted in slightly.
At the entrance to the home straight CATALONIA (M. Cahill) shifted out and brushed HORA SEXTA (J. Byrne). Soon afterwards, HORA SEXTA shifted in under pressure which resulted in CATALONIA having to be steadied when tightened for room between HORA SEXTA and EASY LAGER (T. Harrison). J. Byrne was advised to make greater effort to keep his mounts on a straight course in similar circumstances in the future.
A post-race veterinary examination of HATZIS revealed no significant findings.
The veterinary surgeon reported that CASTLE EXPRESS sustained a laceration to the near foreleg consistent with being galloped on.
Race 5: A SPRING AFFAIR QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1010m
Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for LAUTERBRUNNEN by the prescribed time.
As R. McMahon advised that he was ill, M. Cahill was substituted as the rider of LA MINA.
Connections advised that from the wide barrier LAUTERBRUNNEN (V. Colgan) would settle at the rear of the field. The horse was ridden accordingly.
NIEMANDS GIRL (J. Stanley) and LA MINA (M. Cahill) raced three wide throughout.
After passing the 300m TRICKY ROCKET (A. Pattillo) shifted in away from CHILLS (M. Hellyer), which shifted in slightly under pressure, and became awkward at the heels of REFRAME (T. Harrison).
J. Stanley reported that NIEMANDS GIRL slipped behind at the start and as a result was unable to muster early speed.
Race 6: THE COURIER-MAIL CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1010m
FINNIGAN’S FOLLY (A. Holt) was slow to begin.
NUG’S POCKET (T. Harrison) jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made heavy contact with WARANGA (G. Goold).
TIGER TALES (L. Tarrant) and SKYTANA (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.
WARANGA overraced in the middle stages and approaching the 600m had to be restrained from the heels of NUG’S POCKET.
Apprentice L. Tarrant (TIGER TALES) dropped his whip after passing the 150m.
Stewards sought an explanation from V. Colgan regarding the riding tactics he adopted in the early stages. V. Colgan stated that he was given specific instructions to obtain cover on BELGRANDO and when THE RIGHT ONE (M. Vance) and NUG’S POCKET improved to his outside approaching the 800m, he elected to restrain and sit behind those runners. His explanation was noted.
Apprentice T. Harrison (NUG’S POCKET) was reprimanded for raising her whip arm above shoulder height.
Race 7: CHANNEL SEVEN CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1350m
The start of this race was delayed when the off hind plate on KID TYCOON (A. Pattillo) had to be refitted.
MAGINNIS MAGEE (B. Appo) was slow to begin.
I’M A ZULU (T. Bell) jumped very awkwardly, shifted in and hampered KID TYCOON.
CHEERS BROWE (V. Colgan) was tightened soon after the start between THOMAS’S TRAIN (J. Byrne) and HUXTABLE (A. Holt), which shifted in.
BANCHORY LASS (M. Hellyer) overraced in the early stages.
I’M A ZULU raced three wide throughout.
THOMAS’S TRAIN (J. Byrne) was inclined to lay in in the early part of the home straight.
For some distance approaching and passing the 100m THOMAS’S TRAIN was disappointed for clear running.
Passing the 100m BUSHY (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied when tightened for room between GERMAYNE LASS, which shifted out slightly, and BANCHORY LASS which, after being bumped by I’M A ZULU, shifted in when placed under pressure. M. Hellyer (BANCHORY LASS) was reprimanded and advised to make a greater effort to stop riding and straighten his mounts in the future.
Race 8: SIRROMET 5-STAR WINERY BM75 H’CAP - 1200m
Prior to correct weight apprentice B. Appo viewed the patrol footage of the start to ascertain whether SHOWMETHEMONEY was afforded a fair start. After viewing this, B. Appo did not wish to proceed when it was established that after being fractious in the barriers, SHOWMETHEMONEY jumped very awkwardly and lost considerable ground.
After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, D. Browne, the rider of 3rd placegetter PRETTY GULLY, lodged an objection against ROBBERS ROOST (T. Harrison) being declared 2nd, alleging interference near the 800m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, stewards were of the view that approaching the 800m, when SIR LUMINAR (M. Cahill) crossed to the lead, ROBBERS ROOST commenced to race very fiercely and shifted out, making contact with PRETTY GULLY and forcing that runner three wide without cover, where it was obliged to race for the remainder of the event. Stewards were satisfied that the interference suffered to PRETTY GULLY exceeded the short head margin separating both runners at the finish and therefore upheld the objection and declared correct weight on the amended placings of 7, 11, 13 and 2.
CHARSUI (P. Schmidt), GUNS (G. Goold) and SUBSTATION (T. Bell) raced three wide throughout.
GENTLE GIANT (E. Wilkinson) lost its near fore plate in running.
