Race 1: Grinders Coffee Open H’Cap - 2200m

TRAJET (R. Thompson) was slow to begin.

When the pace steadied passing the 1700m CATALONIA (M. Carson) overraced until passing the 1400m.

CATALONIA raced wide from the 800m.

Stewards sought an explanation from App R. Jamieson regarding the tactics adopted on BOREHOLE and the disappointing performance of the horse. App Jamieson stated she had been instructed to lead however, after BOREHOLE was slow to begin and other runners had crossed to the fence in the early stages she was unable to take up a forward position. App Jamieson added that BOREHOLE commenced to overrace and hang out leaving the 1700m and when the pace steadied she allowed BOREHOLE to stride forward 3 wide. App Jamieson added that whilst the horse was obliged to race 3 wide for the majority of the race she felt the horse was very disappointing. Trainer D. Lawlor confirmed the instructions and advised stewards that BOREHOLE performs at its best when able to lead and he believed that being unable to lead and dictate terms today was a major contributor to the horse’s disappointing performance. Mr Lawlor informed stewards that he would give BOREHOLE a freshen up and aim the horse at an 1800m race at the Gold Coast in a fortnights time. A post race veterinary examination of BOREHOLE failed to reveal any abnormalities. Their explanations were noted.

Race 2: Carlton Draught Class 6 Plate - 1630m

As App A. Holt was indisposed due to injury stewards permitted App A. Butler to be substituted as the rider of VENTURE ON.

Connections advised GOTCHA would be ridden more forward today if circumstances permit. GOTCHA settled towards the rear of the field.

Prior to the start jockey A. Allen requested the veterinary surgeon inspect HAVATRYST. Following this veterinary inspection HAVATRYST was passed suitable to race.

T. Bell reported that after reaching the turn at the 1350m RENEWED VITALITY overraced and refused to settle. T. Bell added that RENEWED VITALITY continued to overrace until passing the 500m and felt the horse’s effort to finish the race off as it did was good in the circumstances.

Passing the 500m VENTURE ON (App A. Butler) was held up on the heels of the tiring CONGO (R. Wiggins) for some distance.

BLACK JET (G. Colless) laid in and proved difficult to ride out in the early stages of the straight.

App J.K. Johnson was admonished for allowing her mount MICKEN to shift out in the home straight and near the 100m inconvenience VENTURE ON.

IN THE GENES (App T. Harrison) raced wide throughout the event.

A. Allen reported that HAVATRYST choked down during the event. A post race veterinary examination of HAVATRYST failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer R. Heathcote informed stewards that it was his intention to consult with the owner’s in regards to the horse’s racing future.

When asked to explain the disappointing performance of CONGO jockey R. Wiggins stated that the horse, quite uncharacteristically sweated up prior to the start today, was fractious in the barriers and as a result missed the start. R. Wiggins went onto explain that he pressured CONGO in the early stages to take up a forward position in accordance with its customary racing pattern and the horse travelled well in a trailing position behind RENEWED VITALITY however, passing the 700m when asked to make ground on the leader, CONGO did not respond to his riding and proved extremely disappointing over the concluding stages. Trainer M. Dunn advised stewards that he believed the work the horse had to do in the early stages to take up a forward position after missing the start had an impact on the horse’s ability to finish the race off, particularly given the fast early pace. Mr Dunn stated that he would nevertheless monitor CONGO in the coming days before making a decision whether to proceed with the horse’s current preparation. A post race veterinary examination of CONGO failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: Coca-Cola Amatil Fillies & Mares Benchmark 85 H’Cap - 1350m

CALIENTE (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.

THIRSTY FOR BLOOD (R. Wiggins) hung out during the middle stages of the race.

A post race veterinary examination of CALIENTE revealed the mare had pulled up lame in the near fore leg. Trainer B. Hill will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided prior to CALIENTE racing again.

Race 4: Mittys Benchmark 85 H'Cap - 1110m

T. Bell reported that CONFIDENT STAR overraced in a position outside the leader in the early and middle stages of the race and may have choked down.

TOM’S LUCK (J. Byrne) laid in during the middle stages of the race.

When pressured in the home straight BYMONASHEE (L. Cassidy) raced with its head on the side.

TOM’S LUCK bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer J. McLachlan was advised that TOM’S LUCK will now incur a mandatory 3 month ban from racing.

Race 5: Tom Hourigan’s 30th Birthday C, G & E Benchmark 85 H'Cap - 1350m

R. Wiggins reported STRADON was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and lost ground.

Passing the 1000m when App T. Harrison attempted to settle JAZZBO MARKS, JAZZBO MARKS resented being restrained and raced fiercely. JAZZBO MARKS continued to overrace until gaining cover behind REGULAR (App J.K. Johnson) leaving the 800m.

Near the 900m AFTER BARON (App K. Matheson) had to be restrained away from the heels of JAZZBO MARKS and was obliged to shift wider on the track for a short distance passing that point.

Race 6: McGrath Estate Agents B.J. McLachlan Stakes (Group 3) - 1200m

The start of this race was delayed when SAGATONA sprung its off side fore plate and had to be reshod.

ELJETEM (J. Byrne) jumped out at the start and bumped STROAK (M. Cahill).

BASSILLIQUE (T. Bell) was severely crowded at the start and lost its position when tightened for room between ECHO GAL (C. Munce), which shifted in and PINCH RIVER (D. Browne), which jumped awkwardly and shifted outwards. A post race veterinary examination of BASSILLIQUE revealed the colt to have sustained a haematoma to the outside of the near fore cannon. Trainer T. Edmonds will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required prior to BASSILLIQUE racing again.

TOTALLY SURE (R. McMahon) jumped awkwardly and shifted in making heavy contact with UNENCUMBERED (N. Berry).

Leaving the 900m TOTALLY SURE shifted out taking STROAK wider on the track. STROAK was then forced to race 3 wide for a short distance rounding the 800m turn when SAGATONA (R. Thompson) improved to the inside of that runner.

Stewards questioned C. Munce regarding the tactics adopted on ECHO GAL and the overall performance of the filly. C. Munce stated that the filly began very well and he pressured ECHO GAL in the early stages to take up a forward position as instructed. C. Munce added that after taking up a position outside OAKLEIGH GIRL (C. Newitt) ECHO GAL raced fiercely and continued to run along despite his efforts to restrain the filly. C. Munce added that shortly after rounding the 800m turn ECHO GAL commenced to lay out and was under pressure from leaving the 600m. C. Munce further informed stewards that ECHO GAL’S tendency to lay out worsened when placed under full pressure leaving the 500m and he was extremely disappointed with the manner in which ECHO GAL compounded in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering from the thumps. After hearing submissions from stable representative Mr R. Elliot stewards acceded to his request to enable him to provide reports from the stable veterinary surgeon before stewards decide if ECHO GAL should pass a test prior to its next race start.

Race 7: Brisbane Racing Club Vo Rogue Plate (Group 3) - 1350m

SPLENDORA (G. Colless) and ARCHITECT (B. El-Issa) were both slow to begin.

Passing the 1200m when CHOOSE A SAGA (E. Wilkinson) assumed the lead MISSY LONGSTOCKING (D. Browne) overraced at the heels of that runner and had to be restrained.

For some distance approaching and passing the 800m ROYAL SCRIBE (App T. Harrison) raced fiercely at the heels of SMART HUSS (R. McMahon).

Leaving the 800m MISSY LONGSTOCKING again overraced at the heels of CHOOSE A SAGA and when restrained lost ground.

SPLENDORA (G. Colless) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn until passing the 100m.

L. Cassidy reported that RUDY did not respond to his riding and failed to stretch out in the straight.

Approaching the winning post ARCHITECT shifted in of its own accord and became awkwardly placed at the heels of RUDY (L. Cassidy).

YOU DID WHAT (App G. Goold), SHIRAZ ATTACK (T. Bell), GUNDY SPIRIT (R. Wiggins) and CASINO BENJO (A. Coome) all raced wide throughout the event.

Race 8: Channel Seven NMW H’Cap - 1200m

As R. Wiggins was overweight stewards permitted App T. Harrison to be substituted as the rider of CHOSEN TALENT. R. Wiggins was subsequently fined the sum of $200.00.

As R. McMahon was overweight stewards permitted C. Munce to be substituted as the rider of CHALUPA. R. McMahon was subsequently fined the sum of $200.00.

INACTION (J. Taylor) blundered badly on jumping away and lost ground.

PEGUNNY CAT (J.P. Stanley) was fractious in the barriers and was slow to begin. Trainer M. Tremble was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse in respect to its barrier manners.

CHOSEN TALENT (App T. Harrison) hung out throughout the middle stages of the race.

Near the 600m SHEEZA MYZZILE (B. El-Issa) shifted in taking DARLIN’ JULES (App A. Allen) in onto INACTION, which had to be steadied.

App Harrison reported that as a result of CHOSEN TALENT hanging rounding the home turn she lost the use of her near side rein on several occasions when the horse continued to hang in the home straight.

C. Munce the rider of CHALUPA reported that he lost the grip on his reins when he drew the whip passing the 200m.

L. Rolls the rider of MORE THAN MONEY was reprimanded for allowing that horse to shift out near the 150m resulting in MASTERFUL PLAY (G. Colless), which was tiring having to be steadied when tightened for room between MORE THAN MONEY and ROYAL CONSORT (T. Bell).

G. Colless the rider of MASTERFUL PLAY which performed below market expectation advised stewards that the gelding, after enjoying a nice run through the race, was extremely disappointing over the concluding stages and could offer no explanation for the horse’s performance other than the horse was up in grade today.

DAPH ‘N’ ALF (B. Stewart), ROYAL CONSORT and CHALUPA (C. Munce) all raced wide throughout the event.
