Race 1: Jim Beam QTIS 2-YO H'cap – 1110m
Due to a clerical error, K. Matheson was dually engaged on I AM BOSS and MOE’S TAVERN. M. Cahill was substituted as the rider of I AM BOSS.
COMMANDING RULER (J. Byrne) knuckled at the start.
AIMEE (J. Taylor) began awkwardly.
Near the 900m, TURBO JET (C. Munce) had to be checked when tightened for room by SHADOWSIDE (R. McMahon), which was also crowded by MOE’S TAVERN (K. Matheson), which had a tendency to shift in away from AIMEE. Stewards were of the opinion that the racing manners and greenness of MOE’S TAVERN were contributing factors to this incident, however reminded K. Matheson, rider of MOE’S TAVERN, to ensure he makes every endeavour to provide his fellow riders with sufficient racing room in future.
RED BOWERS (G. Colless) hung out in the middle stages, resulting in I AM BOSS (M. Cahill) being taken wider on the track. RED BOWERS continued to hang out rounding the home turn, resulting in I AM BOSS becoming unbalanced when again taken wider. A post race veterinary examination of RED BOWERS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities and a routine swab sample was taken. Trainer M. Dunn advised that RED BOWERS would now be gelded and sent for an immediate spell.
MOE’S TAVERN also hung out rounding the home turn.
I AM BOSS hung in under pressure over the final 250m.
COMMANDING RULER raced 3 wide throughout and compounded in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of COMMANDING RULER revealed the gelding to be displaying a mucas discharge from the nostrils, indicative of a respiratory infection. Stewards l advised trainer L. Ross he must supply a veterinary clearance for COMMANDING RULER prior to its next race start.
G. Colless was given the opportunity to explain the performance of RED BOWERS. He stated that his mount hung out for the majority of the race and failed to run on when placed under pressure and, in his view, was disappointing. Trainer M. Dunn advised stewards that RED BOWERS would now be gelded and sent for a spell.
Race 2: Sky Racing World Benchmark 90 H'cap – 2100m
Stewards accepted the explanation from trainer B. Smith for the late declaration of RACING HEART at 7.45 am.
LEGSMAN (S. Drake) and DAZZLE US (J. Byrne) made contact at the start.
Passing the 600m, HI SON (R. Jamieson) improved onto the heels of PREACHER BOY (T. Harrison) and soon after shifted out when not fully clear of BOREHOLE (L. Tarrant), which was weakening, which resulted in BOREHOLE being inconvenienced when tightened for room between HI SON and NOISY OCEAN (J. Johnson). R. Jamieson, rider of HI SON, was issued with a reprimand and advised to show greater care for the safety of her fellow riders in future.
CARN (B. Richardson) raced 3 wide throughout.
T. Harrison, rider of PREACHER BOY, was reprimanded for using her whip when her mount was out of contention.
When asked to comment on the performance of NOISY OCEAN, apprentice J. Johnson explained that the gelding enjoyed a nice run in a handy position with cover and when she improved into the race from the 600m, her mount was immediately under pressure and did not respond to her riding in the home straight. Trainer B. Guy was also disappointed, adding that NOISY OCEAN races best when its runs are spaced.
Race 3: Yellowglen 1MW H'cap – 1600m
After travelling a short distance, SAVE THE STAR (B. Stewart) shifted in abruptly, resulting in BUSY DOIN’ NOTHIN’ (R. Jamieson) being forced in towards the running rail. BUSY DOIN’ NOTHIN’ then commenced to overrace and when steadied from the heels of DELAGO PILLI (L. Tarrant) shifted out and made heavy contact with SAVE THE STAR. Whilst not taking any direct action, stewards nevertheless admonished B. Stewart, rider of SAVE THE STAR, and advised him that his riding bordered on being improper.
RED GOD (A. Allen) overraced in the middle stages.
KARANJA (D. Browne) raced 3 wide in the early stages before being allowed to stride forward to race outside the leader near the 1000m.
Passing the 300m, BUSH AVIATOR (B. El-Issa) shifted out to improve and bumped KARANJA.
B. Stewart, rider of SAVE THE STAR, dropped his whip near the 250m.
Apprentice K. Matheson reported at scale that from the wide barrier, PASQUINEL settled towards the rear of the field with cover and was not suited when the pace of the race was only moderate in the middle stages and developed into a sprint home over the final 600m.
A post race veterinary examination of GRAYSON SQUARE revealed it to have been galloped on on the off hind leg.
Race 4: Diona Civil Engineers F&M Class 6 H'cap – 1200m
NUPTSE bled during the event. As this was the second occasion on it has bled, NUPTSE will now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
Soon after the start, MY SHABELLA (R. McMahon) shifted in and bumped TEAR IT UP (B. El-Issa).
After travelling a short distance, GREY COUNTESS (G. Colless) put in an awkward stride and became unbalanced.
Passing the 800m, FAITH’N’COURAGE (P. Schmidt) improved on to the heels of DREAM’N’IGNITE (S. Payne) and had to be steadied, which resulted in NUPTSE (D. Browne), LITTLE BIT DITSY (M. Cahill) and BO ROSSA (J. Taylor), which were following, all having to be steadied.
Rounding the home turn, BO ROSSA was held up when unable to secure clear running.
Passing the 150m, SHAZZA’S BUBBLES (R. Thompson) was obliged to alter course to the inside of the tiring NUPTSE (D. Browne) in order to improve.
Near the 150m, BO ROSSA improved to the outside of AROUND THE WORLD (R. Ride), which was shifting out under pressure, resulting in TEAR IT UP having to be eased when tightened for room between BO ROSSA and GREY COUNTESS.
TEAR IT UP raced 3 wide without cover.
STYLE MUSIC (T. Harrison) also raced 3 wide throughout.
R. McMahon could offer no tangible explanation for the disappointing performance of MY SHABELLA. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 5: Australia Wide Directional Drilling CG&E Class 6 H'cap – 1200m
After passing the 900m, DANEODIN and NAKANAI (R. Jamieson) began to overrace. A. Allen, rider of PURE WHISPER, was issued with a charge under AR137(d), in that as the rider of PURE WHISPER, when leading, he excessively reduced the pace between the 800m and 600m, which resulted in MY QUILTER (S. Payne), SEZWHO (L. Tarrant), NAKANAI, DANEODIN (P. Schmidt) and HEART OF MANY (C. Munce) all being checked to varying degrees. A. Allen pleaded not guilty to the charge and when deliberating on the matter stewards were of the view that the sectional times for the relevant section of the race should be reviewed prior to making a finding of guilt or otherwise. The matter will be reconvened at 1 pm on Monday, 17 February at the Deagon offices of Racing Queensland.
After the winning post, SEZWHO (L. Tarrant) became unbalanced when it contacted the running rail due to STAR SAMMY (G. Colless) shifting in.
A post race veterinary examination of SEZWHO revealed the horse to have been galloped on on the outside of the off fore canon.
M. Cahill reported that EXCELLENT POINT did not feel entirely comfortable in its action in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of EXCELLENT POINT revealed the gelding striding short in front.
Race 6: Garrards Open H'cap – 1350m
FILLYDELPHIA (A. Allen) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making heavy contact with MISHANI PERSUADER (B. Stewart), resulting in A. Allen, rider of FILLYDELPHIA, becoming unbalanced in the saddle.
Approaching the 400m, DE DOZEN STARS (M. Cahill) shifted out and bumped FILLYDELPHIA.
WAR ENDS (R. Jamieson) raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
A post race veterinary examination of DE DOZEN STARS revealed the gelding to be sore in both forelegs. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised he would be required to provide
When questioned, A. Allen advised stewards that FILLYDELPHIA travelled comfortably in running, however he became concerned from the 600m that the horse was not going to figure in the finish. He said when he placed the mare under pressure it failed to run on in the straight and proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of FILLYDELPHIA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. FILLYDELPHIA lost its near hind plate in running.
Race 7: Ambassador Travel QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1100m
Trainer M. Jacobs was fined $100 for failing to declare E. Wilkinson as the rider of KATZENPFOETCHEN by the prescribed time.
KATZENPFOETCHEN (E. Wilkinson) was slow to begin.
CRAIGLEA CRUZ (K. Wharton) and LA MINA (B. El-Issa) made heavy contact at the start.
Passing the 900m, AGITATE (R. McMahon) commenced to race fiercely when being restrained. This resulted in EXCEEDINGLY (A. Allen), which was following, having to be checked to avoid the heels of AGITATE.
Approaching the 600m, ROMANARMA (M. Cahill) was tightened for room between LA MINA (B. El-Issa) and MISHANI GLADIATOR (B. Stewart).
EXCEEDINGLY was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and until the 250m.
K. Wharton was issued with a reprimand for allowing CRAIGLEA CRUZ to shift in near the 900m when not fully clear of SLAINTE (R. Wiggins), which had to be eased.
Race 8: Darley Australia NMW H'cap – 1350m
Passing the 900m, ALL TAKEN (P. Schmidt) shifted out around the heels of the leader MISS IMAGICA (S. Payne), resulting in ALBERT’S CHOICE (J. Johnson) being taken wider. ALBERT’S CHOICE raced 3 wide without cover for the remainder of the race.
After passing the 1000m, BY CHOICE (B. El-Issa) commenced to race fiercely and shifted out to avoid the heels of STARGRILL BOY (M. Cahill), resulting in DYSFUNCTION (C. Munce) being taken wider.
BIG DECISION (G. Colless) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn when awkwardly placed at the heels of FAINT PRAISE (R. Wiggins).
FRENCH LESSON (J. Byrne) and MAC’S ADDICTION (A. Allen) raced 3 wide throughout.
