WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 7M ALL TRACK
GENERAL: From Esk meetings, 23.6.00
Stewards today questioned S. Katsidis as to why he left the Esk racecourse without permission of the stewards. S. Katsidis's explanation was noted. Stewards also questioned him in relation to an incident which took place near the 600m. in race 6, the Australian Economic Consultants Group H'cap. After taking evidence from S. Katsidis and allowing him to view the official film, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.

Trainer L. Madden was fined $50 for nominating SRONG ARM for the Class 6 H'cap when ineligile.
RACE 1: EXPRESS POST H'CAP - 1200M.
KHAPTERINO jumped inwards at the start, hampering BENIN, CELEBRITY and ST. PLATO.
TOBACCO commenced to hang out from the 700m. and ran wide after making the 600m. crossing. TOBACCO'S waywardness was drawn to the attention of stable foreman Mr R. Catherall.
CELEBRITY was held up for clear running from the 200m. until the 100m.
RACE 2: VB SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1400M.
Trainer P. Blackwell was fined $50 for failing to present MACHTIG MIHI PANIS on course by the prescribed time.
PONTEVEDRA jumped outwards at the start, inconveniencing MACHTIG MIHI PANIS.
At the 1200m., CHOKWE ran up on to the heels of MALTESE POWER and shifted in, making contact with LUKE'S LOOT. At the same stage, MR. GWEILO had to be steadied off the heels of MR. ESTEEM, which was inclined to shift in away from JACK LIVES HERE.
At the 800m., PAUSE had to be restrained off the heels of PONTEVEDRA. PRINCE STARLIGHT, which was following, also had to be restrained and shifted out, resulting in MACHTIG MIHI PANIS being checked when taken on to the heels of MIGHT AND GOLD.
For the majority of the straight, TRI MIRACLE was held up behind MR. ESTEEM.
Leaving the 200m., POLAR PRINCESS was obliged to alter course to the inside of the heels of
MACHTIG MIHI PANIS, which at that stage shifted out.
Near the 150m., EL CARTERO had to be checked when cramped for room between HIRSCHBERG and MACHTIG MIHI PANIS, which was taken out by CHOKWE. Whilst it was conceded that CHOKWE had not initially reacted to M. Paget's efforts to straighten his mount, M. Paget was nonetheless reprimanded for failing to stop riding with the whip and straighten his mount sooner than he had done on this occasion.
PAUSE was held up for clear running until near the 50m..
RACE 3: CITY ROWERS H'CAP - 1400M.
FAR BEYOND, GOLDEN SON were slow to begin.
RED NITRO was tightened on jumping away between LORD COVENTRY AND CHINDANCER.
MISS CEANNE jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
At the 1200m., SILVER PAGE shifted out, hampering SHALARKO and HIMALAYA FALCON. SHALARKO then raced ungenerously for a short distance.
As KRONA LEAH assumed the lead approaching the 1100m., CHAMPAGNE JACK commenced to race fiercely and shifted out, colliding heavily with SILVER PAGE. A veterinary examination of CHAMPAGNE JACK subsequent to the event revealed that gelding to be lame in the off fetlock.
Approaching the 800m., SHALARKO ran up on to the heels of KRONA LEAH and had to be checked. SHALARKO continued to race ungenerously at the heels of KRONA LEAH for some distance and lost ground, which also had the consequence of VINTAGE RESERVE losing its position.
At the 700m., SHOWMANSHIP shifted onto the heels of RED INTRO and had to be steadied.
VINTAGE RESERVE was held up for clear running for some distance after leaving the 250m., and approaching the 100m. shifted in, tightening HIMALAYA FALCON on to the tiring HABITATIS.
The saddle on HABITATIS shifted forward in the early stages, causing its rider, J. Taylor, considerable inconvenience for the remainder of the race.
RACE 4: AUSTRALIA POST SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES (1400M)
CEFFYL jumped away awkwardly and made contact with ROCKEDGE.
STRANGE CONFLICT also jumped away awkwardly.
Approaching the 1000m., STAR SENSATION shifted in momentarily, resulting in SALE OF CENTURY being taken in on to LEGAL OPINION, which in turn was tightened on to STRANGE CONFLICT. STRANGE CONFLICT overreacted by getting its head up and continuing to race ungenerously for some distance following this incident.
When the pace slackened near the 1100m., SHOW A HEART got its head up ad raced fiercely. TREVISCAY, which was racing to that horse's inside, also shifted out, making contact with SHOW A HEART. MOWERMAN and KISSES, which were trailing, also had to be restrained.
JADE PRINCE was inclined to hang out on the home turn.
When questioned, S. Katsidis stated that SHOW A HEART settled nicely in the early stages, however when the pace slackened near the 1000m., SHOW A HEART began to overrace to the extent where he was obliged to allow the colt eventually to stride to the lead. He added that SHOW A HEART became very tired over the concluding stages of the event. An initial veterinary examination of SHOW A HEART failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken. The club's veterinary surgeon reported that after some time had elapsed, SHOW A HEART was displaying a small amount of blood in the off nostril.
When questioned G. Colless, rider of SALE OF CENTURY, stated from the 500m. until well into the straight he attempted to ease out from the inside of STAR SENSATION to obtain clear running, however the gelding seemed hesitant to do so. He added that although SALE OF CENTURY may have appeared disappointing on face value, he felt that the gelding would have finished the race off well had it found clear running.
RACE 5: CARLTON WINTER STAKES - 1500M.
STRANGE AURA and KILORA QUEEN were slow to begin.
Leaving the 1000m., STELLA MAREE had to be steadied when cramped for room by ST. CLEMENS BELLE, which shifted in. NATURAL IS MY NAME, which was following, shifted out off the heels of STELLA MAREE and became unbalanced. O. Bosson, rider of ST. CLEMENS BELLE, was severely reprimanded.
RACE 6: MERCEDES-BENZ STAKES - 1200M.
ANTIQUITY was hampered on jumping away between CITY FAIR and SUPER ESPION.
At the 700m., MAJOR VICTORY had to be steadied when cramped for room between DASH OF BAY and EL MIRADA, which shifted out.
Approaching the finish line, ALPINE EXPRESS had to be eased when KING LOTTO shifted in under pressure. D. Beadman, rider of KING LOTTO, was severely reprimanded for failing to straighten his mount.
RACE 7: TATTERSALL'S CUP - 2200M.
Stewards permitted the late withdrawal of ZATELLA at 8.10 a.m. acting on veterinary advice.
M. Carson, rider of YALLEROI, was found guilty of a charge careless riding, in that at the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in at a stage when not clear of SWIFT KNIGHT, resulting in that horse being tightened on to KOALA KON, which was severely hampered and in turn crowded DAME CATH, which was also severely checked. M. Carson was suspended from riding races for a period covered by 9 meetings, to commence at midnight, 25 June, and to expire at midnight 9 July 2000.
Leaving the 1400m., KINCOURT shifted in of its own accord and struck the running rail.
Approaching the 1000m., BRAVE PRINCE shifted out from behind CAMARENA, forcing LADY SOLVIL out into a 3 wide position.
S. Katsidis, rider of the 3rd placegetter, KOALA KON, was fined $100 for weighing in in excess of half a kilo over his declared riding weight.
RACE 8: TATTERSALL'S MILE - 1600M.
PYRAMID PARK was slow to begin.
Soon after the start, CATAPULT clipped the heels of BROOKLET BOY and blundered badly.
Soon after straightening, BELLO SIGNOR was momentarily held up for clear running.
DAPPLES also had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.
Approaching the 200m., BEAU JOE shifted out slightly, inconveniencing ROCKET BALL.
When attempting a narrow run between MUDEJAR and ARABIAN MAGIC leaving the 200m., ANTHEMS had to be checked due to slight outward movement from ARABIAN MAGIC.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CHEIRON, O. Bosson stated that the gelding was afforded every chance, however failed to sprint home over the concluding stages due to his big weight. A veterinary examination of CHEIRON failed to reveal any abnormality.
ALL WINNERS AND SHOW A HEART WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
