GENERAL: Stewards today concluded an inquiry into a number of issues surrounding the conduct of apprentice M. McDonald when weighing out to ride CALDRON in race 1 at the Tattersall's Race Club meeting on Saturday, 27 July 2002. On the day in question, M. McDonald was replaced when found to be overweight. Whilst stewards accepted evidence that M. McDonald was suffering the effects of the flu, he was nevertheless fined the sum of $100 for being overweight.
Apprentice McDonald was found guilty of a breach of AR 118(C)(c), in that he attempted to weigh out for his ride on CALDRON without an approved body protector. It was determined that this was a deliberate action on behalf of M. McDonald so as to make the declared weight on CALDRON. M. McDonald was suspended from riding in races for a period of 1 month in relation to this offence.
M. McDonald was also suspended for a further period of 1 month after pleading guilty to a breach of AR 83(c), in that he misconducted himself in the weighing room by throwing his saddle and associated gear against a wall in the weighing room. Stewards ruled that the 2 periods of suspension be served concurrently, with the combined penalties commencing at midnight, Sunday, 4 August, and expiring at midnight, 3 September 2002.
In relation to the misconduct offence, stewards ordered that an amount of $700, which was the suspended portion of a $1000 fine imposed upon M. McDonald in relation to a previous misconduct offence at the Deagon Training Centre on 24 June 2002 be invoked.

He stated that despite having the horse's tongue-tie checked just prior to being loaded, he noticed after the race that the horse had got its tongue over the bit and was distressed, and, in his opinion, this explained the poor performance. Trainer M. Plumb confirmed the necessity for the horse's tongue-tie as TERRACE had a habit of getting its tongue over the bit, and that he may experiment with a tongie-tie control bit in future.
