WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 2M ALL TRACK

GENERAL: FROM ITC MEETING, 24.12.03 - RACE 2

Stewards today resumed an inquiry commenced at the Ipswich Turf Club meeting on the above date when apprentice A. Best was charged with careless riding emanating out of an incident in race 2. The inquiry was adjourned to allow apprentice Best's master, trainer Mr B. Guy, who was absent on that day, to be present today. At the resumed hearing today, apprentice A. Best, rider of LOS ALTOS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that over the concluding stages he failed to make sufficient effort to keep his mount in a straight course, which resulted in TIS HOPEFUL having to be checked and make contact with the running rail. A. Best was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 28 December, and to expire at midnight, 14 January 203.

As M. Rodd was indisposed and G. Colless was ill due to wasting, the following riding replacements were approved:

M. Rodd: Race 1. MR SEQUENTIAL - C. Whiteley; Race 3. ELYSIAN FIELD - D. Tanti; Race 4. JAR JAR BINKS - A. Pattillo; Race 5. CHA CHA D'AMOUR - S. Seamer; Race 6. KOOTOOMOOTOO - A. Pattillo; Race 7. THOMSON - J. Powell; Race 8. WHAT A GUY - P. Hammersley.

G. Colless: Race 2. SUPER IMPRINT - Z. Purton; Race 6. BAILS - K. Yoshida; Race 7. GONZO - D. Tanti; Race 8. ORIGIN HERO - C. Whiteley.

SONIC PEAK blundered on jumping away.

MR SEQUENTIAL was slow to begin.

HELLENIC WARRIOR shifted out on jumping away and made contact with KEY OF GOLD.

WAR GENERAL jumped away awkwardly.

After leaving the 100m., HELLENIC WARRIOR was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of C. Whiteley, rider of MR SEQUENTIAL, and near the 50m., MR SEQUENTIAL shifted out and brushed HELLENIC WARRIOR.

RACE 2: SANTA ANITA H'CAP - 1810M.

PROUD BUCK, when pulling hard, shifted out abruptly after passing the 1200m..

RACE 3: WOODBINE H'CAP - 1000M.

ELYSIAN FIELD jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Making the home turn, TENDUE shifted out and made contact with JIMEOIN.

Trainer T. McEvoy and jockey S. Seamer were questioned regarding the disappointing performance of HEADLAND. S. Seamer stated that the colt slipped on jumping away and as a result lost ground, however he added that HEADLAND travelled well until after entering the straight where he placed the colt under pressure. He added that over the concluding stages, HEADLAND tired and did not respond to his riding. Trainer T. McEvoy stated that whilst the colt had missed a gallop, felt that this was not detrimental to the horse's preparation as it had been in work for several months and he had worked HEADLAND in an alternative manner. Mr McEvoy added that whilst HEADLAND was very disappointing today, he felt that there were other factors which may have contributed to the performance, namely that the colt had slipped and lost ground at the start, was forced to race wide, lost its near fore plate in running, and that this was the first time HEADLAND had raced in a clockwise direction. A veterinary examination of HEADLAND revealed the colt to be tender in the near fore hoof. T. McEvoy undertook to report to stewards any abnormality with HEADLAND which may become apparent in the ensuing days.

RACE 4: ARLINGTON H'CAP - 1400M.

PERLE D'OR was slow to begin.

After leaving the 1200m., DEVIL shifted in, tightening the running of GOOD TIMING and made contact with that horse on a number of occasions. J. Powell was cautioned and advised to exercise more care.

After leaving the 100m., JUST AWE shifted out abruptly, making contact with DEVIL. Mrs K. Hall, foreperson for trainer T. Hall, was advised that a warning was being placed on JUST AWE in relation to its racing manners.

RACE 5: LAUREL PARK H'CAP - 1200M.

CRYSTAL LANE raced fiercely in the middle stages.

AINE was held up for clear running until approaching the 200m..

ROJAH HALO was also held up and was unable to gain clear running until near the 100m..

STAR OF FLIGHT lost its off hind plate in running.

RACE 6: AQUEDUCT H'CAP - 1500M.

At the entrance to the straight, BAILS had to be steadied off the heels of COLIN'S SPECIAL, which shifted out.

Near the 350m., WESTERN BRACE shifted out, taking ROAD TO HEAVEN, EMINENCE GRISE, LAMOND and KOOTOOMOOTOO wider on the track.

KOOTOOMOOTOO raced in restricted room in the early stages of the straight between LAMOND and LAUD ATLAS.

D. Tanti, rider of WESTERN BRACE, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mount right out to the finish of the race.

RACE 7: CHURCHILL DOWNS H'CAP - 1200M.

THOMSON jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1000m., SIN CITY had to be steadied to avoid the heels of THOMSON, which shifted in. J. Powell, rider of SIN CITY, was reprimanded and advised to be fully clear when shifting ground.

THOMSON raced fiercely after leaving the 800m. when being steadied off the heels of FEARLESS RACER.

Near the 400m., SCOTTISH REAVER shifted out to improve and made contact with THOMSON on 2 occasions, resulting in THOMSON becoming unbalanced.

SIN CITY was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight, and near the 200m. again had to be steadied to avoid the heels of IN SHANGHAI, which shifted out abruptly. Whilst stewards accepted that IN SHANGHAI was tiring at that stage, jockey Z. Purton, rider of IN SHANGHAI, was advised he must make a greater effort to keep his mounts on a straight course.

CHRISTMAS HANDOUT was obliged to race wide throughout the event.

RACE 8: HOLLYWOOD PARK H'CAP - 1500M.

S. Seamer was examined by the club's doctor after riding in race 6 and stood down from his remaining engagment on CARBONNE. As no other senior rider was available who could ride CARBONNE at its allotted weight, permission was granted for apprentice C. Spry to replace S. Seamer on CARBONNE.

Approaching the 200m., SUNFAIR improved quickly between REGAL GARTER and the tiring SPLENDID DEBUT where there was doubtful room and as a result became unbalanced and unable to improve until near the 100m..
