On jumping away, Merry Pierce brushed the outside gate, then was pushed along by Jockey John Powell. After travelling a short distance, Apprentice Lacey Morrison, riding "My Name Is Luka", shifted in slightly, causing Powell to ease Merry Pierce. As a result, Merry Pierce lost her position as the outside runners moved forward.

Thereafter, Merry Pierce was unable to make ground until near the home turn, when she was urged along by Powell, starting to track Admiral Spy.

Approaching the 200 metre mark, Merry Pierce was eased to the inside of the tiring Mustang’s Mate. Near the 200 metre mark, Jockey Powell struck Merry Pierce with the whip, but the filly failed to respond and she laid out over the concluding stages of the event.

Robert Heathcote, trainer of Merry Pierce, reported to the stewards that the filly was sent for a spell following her race on 24 January 2004.

In this incident SNAPPETY had to be checked to avoid the heels of HIALEAH STAR. After this incident HIALEAH STAR then commenced to race ungenerously. J. Near the 700m GOLD EYE steadied off the heels of SIR MUKAFAST and in doing so shifted out taking CHOCOLATE STARFISH wider on the track.

ELABORATE jumped the crossing at the 600m and as a result became unbalanced and shifted in, taking SIR MUKAFAST, which had improved to the inside of ELABORATE, in on to MT. CARBONNE was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start SIN CITY had to be checked when tightened for room between CEDAR LODGE and LATINLOVER, both of which shifted ground.

Approaching the 1200m CEDAR LODGE shifted in, tightening the running of TELE SERIES, CITY ROSE and AINE. J. Powell, the rider of CEDAR LODGE, immediately endeavoured to relieve the tightening and as a result had to steady his mount off the heels of TREE LOPPER.

P. Hammersley, the rider of LATINLOVER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of TELE SERIES, which had to be checked. P. Hammersley was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 28 January, and expire at midnight on Friday, 6 February.

LATINLOVER raced wide throughout.

GRAND SEMI was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

J. Powell was questioned as to the tactics he adopted on CEDAR LODGE in the early stages. J. Powell stated that he had had no specific instructions from trainer T. Miller other than to settle the horse in a forward position. He added that after passing the 1200m he lost momentum due to having to relieve tightening to runners to his inside and this resulted in him not being able to contest the lead. The explanation was noted.

D. Tanti was also questioned as to his tactics on CITY ROSE, which had led in Class events at the provincials. He stated that trainer K. Kemp had advised him to endeavour to settle behind the leaders with no specific instructions to lead, and after receiving tightening near the 1200m the mare had commenced to overrace. The explanation was noted.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
