TATTERSALL'S RACING CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 26.06.04
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon (Chairman), M G. Ireland; Mr W. Geggie, Mr M. Sweeney, Mr M. Tutt.
WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD RAIL – OUT 6.5M
GENERAL: Trainer R. Smerdon was questioned as to the circumstances surrounding the death of APRES SKI. Mr Smerdon stated that under veterinary care yesterday morning, when being administered electrolytes, APRES SKI had an adverse reaction and subsequently died. Mr Smerdon also indicated that the results of an autopsy had not yet been finalised. Mr Smerdon was advised that he should have reported the matter to the stewards as soon as possible and that he would be expected to forward a copy of the results of the autopsy to Queensland Racing.

Bookmaker Mr K. Thomsett pleaded guilty to a charge under AR.175(p) in that failed to obey a direction of Betting Supervisor Mr W. Flynn and was fined the sum of $200.
Mr Thomsett pleaded guilty to a further charge under AR.175(j) (insulting behaviour) and was fined the sum of $200. In assessing penalties, stewards took into account Mr Thomsett's plea of guilty as well as his expressions of remorse for the incidents.
RACE 1: HAMILTON HOTEL H'CAP – 1400M
As P. Hammersley was indisposed, L. Morrison was substituted as the rider of JIMMY THE BEAR and Z. Purton as the rider of VOLKSINI in Race 7.
NATIONAL BID was a late scratching at 11.24 a.m. acting on veterinary advice that the gelding had been injured en route to the course.
Approaching the 100m SAM'S DREAM shifted out under pressure, slightly inconveniencing JIMMY THE BEAR.
RACE 2: EXPRESS POST H'CAP – 1200M
FORCIBLY jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
WRITTEN JOURNEY was obliged to race wide throughout the event.
JOHN SYN raced ungenerously after leaving the 1000m and continued to do so until after entering the straight.
Near the 800m PERANCE shifted out from behind the heels of MIDTANE KID, forcing JOHN SYN wider on the track.
Near the 150m PERANCE was disappointed for a run between WRITTEN JOURNEY and MERKABA.
RACE 3: TOTAL SPORTS TRAVEL OPEN MILE – 1600M
TAKAS, SUEDE and DEUXIEME were slow to begin.
After leaving the 1200m COURT'S IN SESSION raced fiercely when being restrained off the heels of WESTERN BRACE.
Jockey Z. Purton reported that WESTERN BRACE hung out for the majority of the event which enabled COURT'S IN SESSION and ENTHUSIAST to improve to its inside leaving the 800m. Trainer W. Baker will be interviewed in relation to WESTERN BRACE's racing future.
WISHART was obliged to race wide making the home turn.
DEUXIEME shifted ground over the concluding stages.
A veterinary examination of WYNGROVE failed to reveal any abnormality. Jockey S. Scriven reported that in his opinion WYNGROVE was feeling the effects of a firmer track and he was of the belief that WYNGROVE failed to stretch out in the straight in its normal manner.
Jockey J. Stanley was questioned as to the performance of SUEDE. He stated that after being slow to begin, the mare was reluctant to race in the early stages and was disappointing in that it failed to respond to his riding in the straight.
RACE 4: AUSTRALIA POST QTIS ADDED STAKES – 1400M
TEEN A TE was a late scratching at 7.36 a.m.
Prior to the start D. Nikolic was dislodged by CONVENTION during its preliminary. CONVENTION was subsequently examined by The Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run.
PIMMS was slow to begin.
MAGIC PINS jumped away awkwardly.
In the early stages LANG PARK was obliged to race wide.
After leaving the 600m PIMMS shifted out to improve and made contact with WILLY LEICA.
Approaching the 200m CHUT shifted out from behind the heels of OUR SWEET MOSS and made contact with LANG PARK.
After leaving the 200m SEQUALO FAIR had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MAGIC PINS which shifted out abruptly. N. Rawiller, the rider of MAGIC PINS, was cautioned and reminded of his obligation to be fully clear when shifting ground.
LANG PARK returned to the enclosure with blood in its mouth. The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had sustained an injury to its tongue.
RACE 5: MERCEDES-BENZ STAKES – 1200M
ROYAL OPERA jumped away awkwardly.
PATEZZA and TREVISCAY were slow to begin.
After leaving the 1000m ROYAL OPERA had to be steadied off the heels of SPORTSMAN. At the same stage LAMOND shifted out and had to be steadied off the heels of BRITT'S BEST.
Both TREVISCAY and BRITT'S BEST were obliged to race wide throughout the event.
LION SAFARI was held up for clear running from the 500m until near the 200m.
SPORTSMAN was held up for clear running until after leaving the 100m to the inside of KOOCHIE.
M. Cant reported that in his opinion PATEZZA may have come to the end of its preparation as the horse did not begin well and failed to respond to his riding at any stage of the event.
RACE 6: QUEENSLAND RACING WINTER STAKES – 1500M
Trainer R. Sutton was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for KAVORKA by the prescribed time.
SHA ALMA and LUCIDA were slow to begin.
The saddle on STAR OF FLIGHT shifted after leaving the 1000m, resulting in M. Rodd allowing the mare to stride forward.
FORUM FLOOZIE and BIT OF KNOWLEDGE were obliged to race wide throughout.
Approaching the 1000m KAVORKA commenced to race ungenerously when being steadied.
Approaching the home turn LUCIDA shifted out to improve, taking ROYAL MASK out on to FORUM FLOOZIE.
When questioned, D. Nikolic stated that ROYAL MASK travelled well until after leaving the 600m whereby he felt that the filly was inclined to hang out and in his opinion did not stretch out in the straight. A veterinary examination of ROYAL MASK failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken. Trainer P. Moody advised he would report anything that was amiss with ROYAL MASK in the days following the event.
Near the 200m MY CZECH CHICK had to be checked when attempting a narrow run to the inside of ANCIENT SONG which at that stage was taken in slightly by TA TA TATIANA. B. Stanley, the rider of TA TA TATIANA, was cautioned and advised to exercise more care in future when shifting ground.
Near the 200m WITH MY had to be checked when tightened for room between ROYAL MASK, which was taken out slightly by LUCIDA, and BIT OF KNOWLEDGE, which shifted in. Whilst it was established that Y. Yamazaki, the rider of BIT OF KNOWLEDGE, had made a concerted effort to relieve the tightening to WITH MY, he was nonetheless severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in.
A veterinary examination of WITH MY failed to reveal any abnormality.
The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that MY CZECH CHICK bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion on which MY CZECH CHICK has bled, it will incur a mandatory three-month ban from racing. A swab sample was taken from MY CZECH CHICK.
RACE 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT TATTERSALL'S CUP – 2240M
GENERAL MINOLTA, which was kicked behind the barriers, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
RASPBERRY RIPPLE jumped away awkwardly.
Making the first turn MR. LOFTY shifted out when being restrained.
OUT OF OPTIONS was obliged to race wide throughout.
S. Katsidis reported that FOREST JIM hung out throughout the event.
At the entrance to the straight MOTIVATE shifted out to improve, taking VOLKSINI and OUT OF OPTIONS wider on the track.
Near the 200m GENERAL MINOLTA had to shift out to avoid the heels of the tiring COLD START.
Veterinary examinations of DARALIMARA and RASPBERRY RIPPLE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned, trainer J. Conlan stated that ACETATE's improved performance related to it racing on a firm track. He added that the gelding had won at Sandown on 22 May on a track which although rated slow had only just been downgraded from dead. He also stated that ACETATE had been working well right through its preparation.
RACE 8: HARDY BROTHERS QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1400M
SIR SUCCESS was a late scratching at 8.06 a.m. on veterinary advice. A veterinary certificate was tendered.
Near the 700m SAUCER OF MILK shifted in and made contact with ARROWSWEEP.
Near the 500m DANE SHAKIRA shifted out to improve, taking THAT'S MY MUM out on to SAHARA JAY.
In the early stages of the straight AU CHOCOLAT was held up for clear running.
ALL WINNERS, ROYAL MASK AND MY CZECH CHICK WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
