Trainer J. Hearne was advised to amend the gear for AGES AGO by submitting a return indicating that the horse does not race in a tongue tie. Mr Hearne confirmed that since the gelding had been in his care, which included a run in Toowoomba on 5 June, the horse had never raced in a tongue tie.

Rodd stated that he had addressed the issue of how to ride JIMMY THE BEAR with trainer B. Guy prior to the race, and believing there was no pace he felt it would be in the best interests to ride the gelding forward as previously in Victoria over longer distances the horse had responded when ridden near the lead. Trainer B. Guy advised that at the gelding's previous start he had instructed apprentice Adam Best to ride JIMMY THE BEAR forward, however due to striking some interference during the race, apprentice Best was unable to have the horse positioned where instructed.
