Race 1: TOTAL SPORTS TRAVEL 2MW H’CAP – 1200M
1st – General Patton 2nd – Sir Success 3rd - Spinardo 4th – Miss Glamour Puss
RETRACT (R. McMahon) jumped away awkwardly.
LUST FOR VICTORY (S. Galloway) was slow to begin.
Shortly after straightening GENERAL PATTON (J. Bowditch) was disappointed for a run between SPINARDO (M. Dorrington) and SIR SUCCESS (J. Byrne) and was obliged to alter course inwards to obtain clear running.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of RETRACT, apprentice R. McMahon stated that the mare never travelled throughout and in his opinion may not have handled today’s track conditions. His explanation was noted. A post-race veterinary examination of RETRACT revealed a small laceration inside the off fore pastern.
Race 2: HAMILTON HOTEL 1MW H’CAP – 1400M
1st – Big Kea 2nd – Brigalow Scrub 3rd – Cut A Caper 4th – Stars O’ Gold
BIG KEA (M. Radecker) jumped away awkwardly.
BRIGALOW SCRUB (J. Taylor) jumped out at the start tightening UDDER BRILLIANCE (J. Holder) on to the hind quarters of STARS O’ GOLD (S. Katsidis).
HAMAH (J. Byrne) shifted out close to the finishing line, taking UDDER BRILLIANCE out on to COME IN SPANNER (A. Pattillo).
Apprentice M. Radecker was reprimanded for failing to claim her full allowance on BIG KEA and on MISS GLAMOUR PUSS in Race 1.
Race 3: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLES QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1400M
1st - Accardo 2nd – Nasrullah’s Girl 3rd - Grecolo 4th – Feelin Dandy
WHISPERING GYPSY (S. Galloway) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1300m WELCOME SITE (A. Pattillo) ran up on to the heels of DAVION (J. Bowditch) and had to be steadied.
Near the 1000m turn GRECOLO (S. Seamer) shifted out, resulting in FABIARNA (S. Katsidis) having to be steadied. FABIARNA then shifted out, hampering MISS INDIANA (M. Dorrington).
Both J. Bowditch, the rider of 6th placegetter DAVION, and M. Rodd, the rider of 5th placegetter
ANCA, were reminded of their obligation to ride their mounts out to the end of the race.
Race 4: AUSTRALIA POST STAKES QTIS – 1400M
1st – Sirmione 2nd – Pirate Queen 3rd – Cole Trickle 4th – Sweet As
SIRMIONE (B. Pengelly), JAKELLI (M. Palmer) and ANGEL GIRL (M. Cahill) were all tightened on jumping away between DIAMONDS AM I (M. Rodd) and PLACHUTTA (G. Colless), both of which shifted ground.
REBOUNDED (J. Bowditch) was inclined to overrace in the early stages and shifted in near the 1000m and brushed the running rail.
SWEET AS (S. Baster) and COLE TRICKLE (J. Hoopert) were forced to race wide for the majority of the event.
Passing the 300m DIAMONDS AM I shifted in, inconveniencing REBOUNDED.
Near the 200m SIRMIONE, which was inclined to lay in, became awkward on the heels of IMA JOKER (S. Katsidis).
Near the 100m SWEET AS was placed in restricted room beween SIMPLY FANTASTIC (K. Forrester) and SIRMIONE which was inclined to lay out.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ANGEL GIRL, jockey M. Cahill stated that in his opinion the filly did not handle today’s track conditions. The explanation was noted.
The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that JAKELLI, which finished a distant last, was suffering from metabolic heat syndrome. Trainer P. Facoory was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for JAKELLI prior to the horse’s next start.
Race 5: W. J. HEALY STAKES – 1200M
1st – Natural Destiny 2nd – Starlactic 3rd – Black Ink 4th - Omnitrader
STEP RIGHT IN (J. Bowditch) and BLACK INK (M. Cahill) brushed on jumping away.
STARLACTIC (R. McMahon) was forced to race wide throughout.
STARLACTIC made the 600m crossing awkwardly.
Race 6: QRSE WINTER STAKES – 1500M
1st – La Sizeranne 2nd – Gee I Jane 3rd – Villa Bled 4th – Love And Money
GEE I JANE (S. Seamer) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with GEELONG MAGESTIQUE (G. Colless).
Passing the 1400m DIAMOND HAILEY (A. Pattillo) had to be checked when tightened for room by GEE I JANE which was inclined to lay in despite the efforts of its rider S. Seamer.
S. Seamer reported that the saddle on GEE I JANE shifted forward near the 1000m, placing him in some difficulty for some distance.
Near the 700m GEE I JANE, which was overracing, shifted out, taking LA SIZERANNE (M. Rodd) and STAR SHIRAZ (J. Byrne) wider on the track.
Near the 550m LA SIZERANNE shifted out to improve around the heels of VILLA BLED (J. Taylor) and in doing so made contact with STAR SHIRAZ.
K. Forrester, the rider of 6th placegetter COUNTESS BATHORY, was found guilty of a charge under AR. 137(b) in that he failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race and was fined $1,000.
A post-race veterinary examination revealed MISS POTENTIAL to be sore in the near foreleg. Trainer B. Borrie’s representative Mr E. Chippindale was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to the mare’s next start.
Race 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT TATERSALL’S CUP – 2200M
1st – Ring Of Fire 2nd – Empyreal 3rd – Lester Thunderwing 4th – Classic Karla
LESTER THUNDERWING (A. Pattillo) was slow to begin.
LE BRON (S. Seamer) and HARBOUR MAGIC (G. Colless) were forced to race wide in the early stages.
BEAT THAT (R. McMahon) was forced to race wide for the majority of the event.
ZAUBEREI (K. Forrester) overraced in the early stages.
Close to the finishing line LE BRON had to be steadied when tightened for room between BAZELLE (S. Scriven) and LESTER THUNDERWING which shifted out under pressure.
Race 8: TATTERSALL’S OPEN MILE – 1600M
1st – Spirit Of Tara 2nd - Mitanni 3rd – Silky Red Boxer 4th - Benedetti
SMART AND MIGHTY (J. Byrne) and LINDHOLME (D. Moor) came together on jumping away.
HISSY FIT (R. McMahon) and MITANNI (K. Forrester) came together on jumping away.
Shortly after the start BENEDETTI (S. Baster) shifted in and made contact with MR HORNBLOWER (S. Seamer).
As S. Baster had left the course without permission, stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason for MR HORNBLOWER having to be checked near the 1400m between CONSULAR (S. Scriven) and BENEDETTI.
HISSY FIT was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
Shortly after straightening SMART AND MIGHTY was obliged to alter course inwards off the heels of TYCOON ROSE (M. Palmer) to obtain clear running.
Near the 250m MR HORNBLOWER was inconvenienced by BENEDETTI which shifted out.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on CONSULAR today as opposed to its normal racing pattern, jockey S. Scriven stated that he had no firm instructions, however he rode CONSULAR aggressively in the early stages and after receiving tightening passing the 1500m was left with little alternative but to ride his mount forward in an endeavour to maintain his position. He added that the horse then overraced for some distance and also, in his opinion, it may not have been entirely comfortable in today’s track conditions. Trainer W. Baker comfirmed the instructions. Their explanations were noted.
