MEL (A. Coome) jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start, PRINCESS NORMA (J. Byrne) was placed in restricted room between UNINTENTIONAL (R. McMahon), which shifted in slightly, and PARTYGOER (M. Price), which after receiving pressure on its hind quarters, shifted out slightly. As a result, PRINCESS NORMA clipped the heels of PARTYGOER and blundered, resulting in J. Byrne becoming unbalanced.

MEL was forced to race wide in the early stages and approaching the 1000m commenced to overrace and did so for some distance.

Shortly after straightening, MOODEE (B. Stewart) shifted out and brushed PARTYGOER.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MEL, apprentice A. Coome stated that the gelding was inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages, and when placed under pressure near the 300m, MEL failed to respond to his riding. Trainer A. Bailey was advised stewards that MEL would be sent for an immediate spell.

Apprentice M. Price was questioned regarding the seemingly poor performance of PARTYGOER. She stated that the filly travelled well throughout the race however shortly after entering the straight received a bump from MOODEE (B. Stewart), and in her opinion as a result of that contact, the gelding failed to run on as expected. The explanation was noted.

Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on FLASH BANG were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets.
