ICEDANE (S. Drake) and LUNCH AT FRISCOS (G. Colless) raced wide for the majority of the event.
M. Cahill, rider of TELESTO WARRIOR, explained that for some distance in the straight he was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ONE FOR NONE (D. Browne), and after the 100m when almost in the clear, he was tight on the inside of ICEDANE, and as a consequence was not able to ride TELESTO WARRIOR out in the straight as he normally would.

PRESLEY (A. Pattillo) was tightened for room shortly after the start between MYSTICAL KNIGHT (J. Byrne) and ZEKEZA (B. Evans), which shifted out.
POOR JUDGE (J. Taylor) raced ungenerously in the early stages.
Near the 500m, MR ORIENT (O. Turpin) was momentarily crowded for room between GAG ORDER (C. McIver) and GUNDY SON (J. Bowditch), which shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running.
BATTLEFIELD (K.McEvoy) laid in when placed under pressure over the concluding stages.
GAG ORDER (C. McIver) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Following the race, FELINE FLYER was examined by the veterinary surgeon. He stated the filly was striding out noticeably short in front and was lame in its off foreleg. He added that when flexed, the filly was displaying pain in its off fore fetlock joint. Before FELINE FLYER again races, a veterinary certificate of fitness will need to be produced.
The veterinary surgeon also examined ZAKEZA following the race. He advised he noticed the filly coughed several times. No further action was advised.
Race 3: Hamilton Hotel 1mw H'cap - 1400m
1st – Samtheflirt 2nd – Dalzar 3rd – Danzylum 4th - Shaketheground
Trainer P. Messara was fined the sum of $100 for failing to present the registration papers for BELLA CANTATA. The horse was identified from documents provided by Queensland Racing.
Before leaving the parade yard, K. Yoshida, rider of ROCKEM, was advised by the horse’s attendant to check the tongue of ROCKEM after arriving at the start. K. Yoshida was aware that ROCKEM had previously raced in a tongue-tie and he misunderstood the instruction from the attendant and after arriving at the start when the horse did not have a tongue-tie on, he requested one be fitted by the starter. This was done and ROCKEM raced in a tongue-tie which was not part of its declared gear. Subsequently, K. Yoshida was fined the sum of $200 for negligence, in that he incorrectly presumed ROCKEM was to wear a tongue-tie.
ROCKEM (K. Yoshida) was slow to begin.
SAMTHEFLIRT (P. Robl) was crowded for room at the start between THE CAVERN CLUB (A. Spinks) and KENTISH ROSE (Matthew Palmer).
SAVANNA LA MAR (T. Angland) and JUSSEMI (A. Pattillo) came together and bumped at the start.
DECEPTION BAY (D. Gauci) overraced in the early stages, and near the 1000m, when continuing to overrace, had to be restrained when momentarily tightened for room between SAMTHEFLIRT, which shifted out slightly, and BELLA CANTATA (J. Taylor), which shifted in and away from BLACK MORGAN (M. Cahill).
Jockey L. Cassidy, rider of VEEWAP, explained that the horse was in a very piggy mood before the start and raced ungenerously and proved disappointing over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination of VEEWAP revealed the colt to have bled during the event and was suffering from thumps. Trainer T. Vasil was advised that the colt will now be barred for a period of 3 months.
Race 4: Australia Post Bicentennial Stakes 2yo Plate - 1400m
1st – Shellscrape 2nd – Carrara 3rd – Man Of Oar 4th – Dual Chamber
Trainer G. Englebrecht was fined $100 for failing to present the registration papers for WEB OF LOVE. The horse was identified from documents provided by Queensland Racing.
After riders had mounted, it was noted that N. Rawiller, rider of CARRARA, was wearing silks on which the name T. Agland was imprinted. Subsequent to the race, N. Rawiller stated that some of his gear was delayed at the airport and he had borrowed gear from jockey Agland. Whilst stewards took no action, N. Rawiller was advised that in similar circumstances it was in everybody’s interests if he sought permission from stewards in regard to such matters.
P. Robl, rider of WEB OF LOVE, stated that for some time now he had been wearing a light pair of silks without his name stamped on them. No action was taken today, however he was advised that this was a practice that would not be tolerated in future.
Near the 1000m, SAVOIA (B. Pengelly), which was racing close to the heels of CAPTAIN SONADOR and inclined to pull, shifted ground and struck the running rail. FAST LOVER, which was following, was hampered as a consequence. The occurrence was deemed accidental.
Following the race, TAFFY was examined by the veterinary surgeon with no abnormalities detected.
The veterinary surgeon did say he noticed following the race that FRETON had been galloped on on the near hind leg.
Race 5: W.J. Healy Stakes Group 3 – 1200m
1st – News Alert 2nd – Wasted emotions 3rd – Keano 4th – Nuclear Medicine
When under pressure in the straight, NEWS ALERT (T. Agland) had a tendency to shift ground outwards and because of this, T. Agland was obliged to stop riding on a number of occasions.
D. Gauci, rider of MR SLICK, explained that he was asked by the trainer not to override the horse in the early stages. He stated that MR SLICK left the gates well, then began to overrace on the first turn, got its head up and commenced to hang out badly, and as a consequence of this got on the heels of MAXISUN, knuckled and near fell.
When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight, D. Oliver, rider of KEANO, stated he did not think that rounding the turn and in the early part of the straight, KEANO was travelling all that well, adding that he was aware NEWS ALERT and WASTED EMOTIONS had got away from him, however at that stage he was awkwardly placed and KEANO had a tendency to lay in and he was not able to get going on the horse as soon as he would have liked. He did say that although he thought that KEANO was a bit flat today after its last run on a heavy track, the colt did close the race off well when he got clear and rode the colt out. The explanations tendered by D. Oliver were accepted.
WASTED EMOTIONS lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 6: Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup Group 3 – 2200m
1st – Hume 2nd –Bellagio Wynn 3rd – Veloce Bella 4th – Fast Future
Before riders were mounted for this race, officials established that the lead bag with which Jockey D. Oliver had weighed out with was not on BALLACK. The lead bag was found to have been left in the saddling stall, and required D. Oliver being reweighed and BALLACK having to be resaddled. Following the race, Mr P. Koumis, stable foreman for trainer Mr D. O’Brien, was advised that a fine of $2000 was being imposed on Mr O’Brien for negligence, in that BALLACK was saddled and presented to race without all the gear with which the rider had weighed out with. AR140A.
BELLAGIO WYNN (L. Cassidy), DERAISMES (K. McEvoy) and BALLACK (D. Oliver) were all tightened for room at the start between HUME (S. Galloway), which shifted in, and FAST FUTURE (M. Walker), which shifted out.
Turning out of the straight on the first occasion, DERAISMES (K. McEvoy) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CASTLE HEIGHTS (B. Evans, which shifted in when not quite clear.
Near the 800m, CASTLE HEIGHTS, when attempting to establish a run to the inside of NONSENSICAL (J. Taylor), raced in restricted room for a short distance between that horse and BALLACK (D. Oliver).
An inquiry was opened into the manner in which jockey S. Seamer had ridden BANGERANG QUIKPIC. Initial evidence was taken from Mr D. Weir, trainer of the horse. He stated that he had instructed S. Seamer to allow the horse to bowl along in front and to make sure he did not fight against it as early on in its career, BANGERANG QUIKPIC had been known to have taken charge of riders. He expressed concern as to the manner in which the horse had gone to the front today. After providing evidence, Mr Weir was told to report to the inquiry room subsequent to the running of race 7 when the matter would be resumed. S. Seamer, rider of BANGERANG QUIKPIC, confirmed he had to been told not to fight against the horse, and he stated that in the early stages he was comfortable with the way BANGERANG QUICKPIC was travelling, however after the crossing near the 1800m, the gelding took hold of the bit and travelled much harder than he had wanted it to. He added that he endeavoured to help the horse and not fight against it. Bearing in mind the instructions he had been given, he realised he was going to quickly in the lead, but in the circumstances he had little alternative. After the last race today, considerable effort was made to have Mr Weir attend the inquiry, however he was not contactable. Stewards were not prepared to conclude the matter without taking further evidence from Mr Weir and S Seamer, and therefore the matter was adjourned to a date to be fixed. Following the race, a veterinary examination showed some signs of soreness in its near fore fetlock joint.
Race 7: Qld Breeders’ F&M Winter Stakes - 1400m
1st – Russetnig 2nd – Prima Nova 3rd – Subtle Cove 4th – Tempest Tost
Trainer J. Coyle was fined $100 for failing to present the registration papers for SUBTLE COVE.
Near the 1100m, IMANANABAA (B. Pengelly), which was overracing, was tightened for room between DORF COMMAND (J. Byrne) and ABSOLUT GLAM (D. Oliver), which was taken in by CHINCHILLA ROSE (P. Wells). Due to the circumstances involved, the incident was deemed accidental. For some distance after, IMANANABAA continued to race keenly.
Passing the 800m, DANEHILL SMILE (S. King) got its head on the side when awkwardly placed close to the heels of DORF COMMAND (J. Byrne), which shifted in and away slightly from ABSOLUT GLAM (D. Oliver).
After leaving the 400m, PRIMA NOVA (S. Scriven), which was closing the race off strongly, was obliged to shift in abruptly to find running and go forward.
J. Taylor, rider of AMBERINO, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 200m he allowed his mount to shift outwards when insufficiently clear of ILLUMINATES, and as a result of that, ILLUMINATES was crowded on to CHINCHILLA ROSE and lost ground to which it was entitled and was checked. J. Taylor was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 24 June and to expire at midnight, Friday, 10 July. In assessing penalty, considerable weight was placed on the guilty plea submitted by J. Taylor and the obvious contrition he displayed for causing an incident such as this.
The veterinary surgeon reported after the race that ILLUMINATES had sustained an injury to the near hind leg as a result of being galloped on. He also added that the horse sustained a laceration to the off fore pastern and was lame in the off fore leg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to the horse’s next race start.
Jockey K. McEvoy, rider of FORENSICS, will be afforded an opportunity to explain his reasons for leaving the racecourse today without seeking permission.
Race 8: Centenary Classic Mile - 1600m
1st – Soiled 2nd – Barlinnie 3rd – Dorabella 4th – Regal Castanea
Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $100 for failing to present the registration papers for MAJORCA. MAJORCA was identified from documents provided by Queensland Racing.
In the middle stages, PYRAMIDS (M. Palmer) raced ungenerously and got its head up.
Near the 300m, DORABELLA (D. Oliver) shifted out to obtain clear running and made contact with HARD TO CATCH (J. Taylor).
When questioned, D. Peisley, rider of TAGUS, stated that after the 400m when he struck the horse with the whip it appeared to him to become unbalanced and shorten stride. He was concerned thereafter with its action and over the final 200m when the gelding was well beaten, and he did not ride it out as he normally would. A veterinary examination of TAGUS failed to reveal any abnormality.
The veterinary surgeon also examined RAGS TO RICHES subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormalities.
