Race 1: Starlight Children’s Foundation 1mw H'cap – 2106m
1st –D’Elcatraz 2nd – Beartracker 3rd – Eureka 4th - Lander
Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of TELFIRE at 12.10 pm on veterinary advice after the gelding had sustained an injury to the near side hip when being transported to the track. Stewards advised the stable representative that a veterinary clearance would be required for TELFIRE before racing again.
Rounding the home turn, UNCLE JAN (R. Goltz) was held up and unable to improve.
After passing the 400m, BEARTRACKER (M. Speers) shifted out to improve and brushed MR GOLD FIRE (J. Keating).
D’ELCATRAZ (K. Pope) was inclined to shift out under pressure over the final 100m.
After riding in race 1, K. Pope was examined by the club’s doctor and stood down from his remaining engagements.
Race 2: Stargames 2MW Last Year H'cap - 1200m
1st – Southerly Impact 2nd – German Chocolate 3rd – Albert Cadabra 4th – Blackwoods Choice
The starting time of this race was rescheduled to 1.17 pm due to K. Pope requiring medical attention from the ambulance officers and club doctor. K. Pope was subsequently transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital. Riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
OLLIE VOLLIE (C. McIver) jumped away awkwardly.
LIGHT RED (C. Reith) and BLACKWOODS CHOICE (J. Byrne) bumped on jumping away.
Approaching the first turn, LIGHT RED, when caught wide, shifted in and bumped ALBERT CADABRA (M. Speers).
Near the 500m, BLACKWOODS CHOICE shifted out to improve and bumped ALBERT CADABRA. J. Byrne, rider of BLACKWOODS CHOICE, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 3: Paynter Dixon QLD Open H'cap - 1500m
1st –Secrets Untold 2nd – Hume 3rd – Crossthestart 4th – Buzz Henry
IN REHEARSAL (M. Cahill) and SECRETS UNTOLD (O. Turpin) were both slow to begin.
NEVADA GAMBLER (J. Taylor) dipped near the 300m.
Jockeys L. Cassidy (KINGS ARTIST), M. Cahill (IN REHEARSAL) and apprentice jockey O. Turpin (SECRETS UNTOLD) were cautioned for raising their arm above their shoulder when using the whip over the concluding stages.
THIN AND CRISPY (C. Reith) choked down during the race. Trainer T. Hurley reported that the gelding got its tongue over the bit and may have choked down. He indicated that he would consider making application to add a tongue-tie to the gear of the gelding.
A post race veterinary examination of NEVADA GAMBLER, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
CROSSTHESTART lost its near hind plate in running.
Race 4: Coca-Cola Amatil QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1400m
1st –Listen Son 2nd – Good Emperor 3rd – Titanium Rock 4th – Princess Qualo
LORD LINLITHGOW was fractious in the barriers, dislodging L. Rolls. LORD LINLITHGOW was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. L. Rolls was examined by the ambulance paramedics and cleared to fulfil his engagement. The start was further delayed slightly due to LORD LINLITHGOW having to be resaddled. As a result of barrier manners of LORD LINLITHGOW, trainer T. Bailey was advised that LORD LINLITHGOW must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Mr Bailey advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.
ORLETSKY bucked for some distance after the start and the horse was retired from the race. Connections were advised that the filly must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
Near the 300m, CHARMINGLY (J. Byrne) was disappointed for a run between BRUJITA (J. Taylor) and LORDLINLITHGOW (L. Rolls) and was obliged to shift back to the inside in an endeavour to obtain clear running.
C. Reith, rider of AFRICAN LION, was cautioned for raising his arm above the shoulder when using his whip over the final 200m.
FANTASTIC FORCE (G. Colless) was caught 3 wide after the start and obliged to race 3 wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned as to SHADOW BUSTER getting out of his ground in the early stages, M. Hellyer stated that his mount was reluctant to travel at that stage despite his efforts.
S.Seamer was cautioned for raising his arm above his shoulder when using the whip over the final 200m.
L. Rolls was examined by the club’s doctor following this event and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
Race 5: Simon George &Sons Class 6 Plate – 1805m
1st – Future’s Dream 2nd – Eddie Rapido 3rd – Winmara 4th – Jedi Starfighter
SANDTON was declared a late scratching at 10.45 am on veterinary advice.
Near the 1600m, when racing in restricted room, CHARVICKY (M. Speers) shifted in and away from JEDI STARFIGHTER (M. Cahill) and made contact with the hind quarters of SHUFFLE THE CASH (C. McIver). SHUFFLE THE CASH then shifted outward, turning the hind quarters of CHARVICKY out towards JEDI STARFIGHTER, resulting in M. Speers almost being dislodged from CHARVICKY when the horse became unbalanced. When unbalanced, C. McIver, rider of SHUFFLE THE CASH, assisted M. Speers to regain his balance. WINMARA (O. Turpin) and ALL AFFAIR (K. Banks), which were following, were checked as a consequence. Stewards noted the circumstances and no direct action was taken against any particular rider. C. McIver, rider of SHUFFLE THE CASH, reported that after suffering interference, his mount seemed somewhat reluctant to travel up directly behind runners forward of him, and due to the tempo of the race was under pressure some distance from the finish.
For some distance on straightening and until leaving the 300m, EDDIE RAPIDO (J. Taylor) was held up and unable to improve.
Stewards questioned apprentice O. Turpin regarding the riding tactics he adopted on WINMARA, particularly from the 600m where he elected to persist with a run between SHUFFLE THE CASH and ALL AFFAIR rather than ease his mount to the outside and improve. O. Turpin stated that from the wide barrier he had been instructed to position his mount on the rails and endeavour to improve, however he was unable to do so after striking interference near the 1600m. He added that near the 600m, he elected to persist with a run closer to the rails rather than risk being forced wider, as to take a run to the outside would have meant him having to ease back behind ALL AFFAIR, and then to attempt to improve and be forced very wide on the track. He added that he was held up and unable to improve after leaving the 600m as SHUFFLE THE CASH was inclined to lay out and after getting clear in the straight the horse ran home well.
Race 6: Qld Reef & Beef Class 6 4yo & UP H'cap - 1400m
1st – Mr Orient 2nd – Thorondo 3rd – Release Me 4th – Judge Me Not
Shortly after the start, THORONDO (J. Taylor) blundered and shifted in, causing GAZE ON (C. Reith) to be tightened on to READY TO RISE (M. Cahill).
JUDGE ME NOT (S. Seamer) pulled hard and was obliged to race 3 wide for the majority of the event.
TELEBANCO (L. Cassidy) was held up in the straight until approaching the 200m.
When questioned as to RELEASE ME racing in the lead today as opposed to previous occasions where the horse had raced back in the field. J. Byrne stated he had discussed the race with the trainer and felt that it appeared there was not a lot of pace in the race and that it may be in the best interests of the horse to ride RELEASE ME positively and obtain a forward position. He stated that he anticipated STOLIT being the leader, however when he attempted to allow STOLIT to progress to the lead and take a trail, his mount was inclined to lay out, thus preventing him from restraining it to trail STOLIT. J. Byrne added that the horse had laid out throughout the race. Trainer J. McLachlan stated that he did not anticipate RELEASE ME leading as he felt STOLIT would have led, however he agreed that due to the lack of pace in the race today he expected RELEASE ME to race close to the lead. Mr McLachlan was advised of his obligations to notify stewards of any variation in riding tactics.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of STOLIT, trainer T. Miller explained that the horse has not performed up to expectations at Eagle Farm and its best form has been at Caloundra this campaign. A post race veterinary examination of STOLIT revealed the horse had cast its off hind plate and had pulled up showing signs of being mildly distressed.
Race 7: Kedron-Wavell Services F&M Quality F&M H'cap - 1200m
1st – Lilleelavee 2nd – Linear 3rd – Beyonce’s Star 4th – Michelle Cafea
ZERO ROCK (G. Colless) blundered on jumping away.
MISS REED (J. Taylor), PLENTY OF PRACTISE (M. Morris) and LINEAR (L. Rolls) were a little slow to begin.
ZERO ROCK (G. Colless) blundered on jumping away. G. Colless, rider of ZERO ROCK, reported that he had to make use of the mare from its wide barrier to obtain the lead and he felt that this had some affect on the horse finishing the race off.
PLENTY OF PRACTISE (M. Morris) had difficulty obtaining clear running over the concluding stages of the race.
Leaving the 900m, SHAKEVA (D. Craven) shifted off the rails from behind the heels of ZERO ROCK, forcing MOPPETT (J. Bowditch) and GUISSEPINO (J. Byrne) wider on the track.
SLEEK REPEAT (C. Reith) was caught wide on the first turn and then raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of SLEEK REPEAT revealed the mare had sustained a laceration to the off hind coronet.
Near the 200m, LILLEELAVEE (K. Banks), when being positioned between SHAKEVA (D. Craven) and MOPPETT (J. Bowditch), made contact with MOPPETT on 2 occasions when that horse shifted out away from SHAKEVA, which was shifting outwards under pressure.
Passing the 150m, NEPRO (B. El-Issa) had to be checked when racing between LINEAR (L. Rolls), which shifted in slightly, and MICHELLE CAFEA (O. Turpin), which was taken out by MOPPETT, which was unbalanced after making contact with LILLEELAVEE leaving the 200m.
Stewards questioned J. Byrne and trainer’s representative Mrs S. Thomson regarding the riding tactics adopted on GUISSEPINO and the horse’s performance today. Mrs Thomson stated that jockey Byrne had been instructed to have the horse positioned midfield, as it was at its previous start. J. Byrne stated that from the wide barrier he elected to look for a position midfield, however making the first turn he was caught 3 wide and was of the opinion he had no option other than to press forward. He added that in working forward 3 wide he was obliged to make use of the horse as SHAKEVA (D. Craven) shifted out from behind the leader, and he was unable to cross to the outside of ZERO ROCK until near the 600m. J. Byrne stated after being caught wide he was a victim of circumstances and the horse ran on creditably despite tiring over the final 200m.
Race 8: Thunderheart NMW H'cap - 1600m
1st – Papal Joy 2nd – Outer Pole 3rd – Just A Classic 4th – Dell Amby
SIRENA LIGERA (M. Speers) jumped outwards at the start, bumping PAPAL JOY (M. Cahill).
RAM JAM INN (O. Turpin) was caught 3 wide on the first turn and raced 3 wide for the majority of the race.
Stewards questioned L. Cassidy as to him returning to scale overweight on DELL AMBY. However due to mitigating circumstances, no action was taken.
