1st – Onarohl 2nd – Cuban 3rd – Beauty Strike 4th - Tushuk
BEER WITH FRIENDS (S. Sheargold), CUBAN (B. Wallace) and ONAROHL (R. Wiggins) were slow to begin.
Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, BEAUTY STRIKE (D. Peisley) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SENSATIONAL HILL (J. Letherby), which shifted in when not fully clear. J. Letherby, rider of SENSATIONAL HILL, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Leaving the 1400m, ONAROHL shifted wider on the track to improve to a position outside the leader leaving the 1300m.
Near the 1000m, BEAUTY STRIKE improved onto the heels of ONAROHL and had to be steadied.
ONAROHL had a tendency to hang out throughout the event and when placed under pressure in the home straight commenced to shift ground outwards over the final 200m.
A post race veterinary examination of SENSATIONAL HILL revealed the horse to be lame in both forelegs. Trainer W. Sutton was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for SENSATIONAL HILL prior to its next race start.
Race 2: Sequalo @ Lyndhurst F&M Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st – Leoncino 2nd – Egyption Tomb 3rd – Hetty 4th - Liberty
The saddle on FLINDERS COMMAND shifted travelling to the barriers, necessitating the horse being resaddled prior to the start.
EGYPTIAN TOMB (R. Wiggins) shifted out at the start, making contact with the hind quarters of LEONCINO (T. Harrison), which in turn shifted out abruptly, inconveniencing QUEEN DOREEN (B. Wallace) and SUHAILAH (M. Speers).
OUR LITTLE MISSY (J. Brown) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 900m, LEONCINO had to be steadied when improving into a narrow run between RED DELIGHT (C. Whiteley) and EGYPTIAN TOMB.
J. Drury, rider of TAPIKI, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 800m she permitted her mount to shift inwards from a 3 wide position when insufficiently clear of FLINDERS COMMAND (A. Kitson), which resulted in A. Kitson having to restrain FLINDERS COMMAND, which in turn shifted in, making contact with EMMZ AMELIA (E. Kehoe), which was also tightened for room, resulting in FLINDERS COMMAND and EMMZ AMELIA becoming unbalanced. J. Drury was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 7 January and to expire at midnight, 15 January.
HETTY (A. Butler) was held up for clear running approaching and leaving the 400m.
Approaching the 100m, LEONCINO had to be momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of EMMZ AMELIA, which shifted out slightly under pressure.
Near the 100m, LEONCINO shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so placed FLINDERS COMMAND in restricted room for a short distance, and then near the 50m shifted in under pressure, inconveniencing EMMZ AMELIA (E. Kehoe).

When questioned regarding the performance of PACE EGG, J. Bowditch explained that whilst the horse had trialled only fairly in preparation for today’s race, he felt that it raced greenly despite being momentarily held up rounding the home turn. J. Bowditch added that he recommended to connections that they experiment with blinkers on PACE EGG prior to its next race. Trainer N. Stewart agreed with jockey Bowditch’s recommendation regarding the blinkers. A post race veterinary examination of PACE EGG revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. A veterinary clearance will be required for PACE EGG prior to its next race start.

After being obliged to race 3 wide in the early stages, R. Wiggins rode KING’S ROMANCE forward to assume the lead and then steadied the pace, causing NOT A GREAT LOOK (T. Harrison) to become awkward on that runner’s heels. R. Wiggins, rider of KING’S ROMANCE, was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances. As a result of this incident, NOT A GREAT LOOK then shifted out, forcing TATT’S LUCKY (G. Geran) wider on the track. CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (S. Arnold), which was following, was also inconvenienced.
Near the 400m, NOT A GREAT LOOK (T. Harrison), shifted out and away from the heels of DANCING CRIMINALS (J. Warrington), which had shifted out to obtain clear running, resulting in MAKO SHARK (J. Bowditch), which was following, clipping the heels of NOT A GREAT LOOK and losing ground. Whilst stewards did not attribute full blame for the incident on J. Warrington, rider of DANCING CRIMINAL, he was nonetheless advised to show greater care in future when shifting ground.
ROCKIN’ ROZ (B. Wallace) raced wide for the majority of the event.
CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (S. Arnold) raced wide throughout.

When the pace slackened in the middle stages, DESERT VISION overraced at the heels of TICKING (L. Rolls) for some distance and as a result shifted in, making contact with the running rail near the 900m.
Approaching the 800m, as a result of the slow pace, ROCKING EASY (J. Bowditch) had to be restrained off the heels of DESERT VISION, which continued to overrace, resulting in PEPPSEELO improving onto the heels of ROCKING EASY and shifting out, making contact with NOBLE JESTER (C. DOMINI(J. Stanley) was held up and unable to improve from rounding the home turn until a point approaching the 250m.
When questioned regarding the performance of FREYBERG, M. Speers explained that the horse had worked hard in the early stages to cross from its wide barrier, and that, in his opinion, the horse may have got its tongue over the bit and that this may have affected the horse’s breathing capacity. Trainer’s representative Mr D. Mayfield-Smith reported that FREYBERG had pleased him in its trackwork leading up to today’s race, and connections had expected a forward showing. He further added that in view of M. Speer’s recommendation, a tongue-tie may be added to the horse’s gear at its next race start after consideration from trainer L. Mayfield-Smith. He further advised that the stable would advise stewards should anything come to their attention after having further veterinary examinations conducted on the horse. A post race veterinary examination of FRYBERG revealed it to be tender in the off fore foot as a result of losing its off fore plate during the race.
