Supplementary Report
From Doomben, 22.2.12: Trainer F. Phillips advised stewards that following Navillus Blondie’s disappointing run on the above date when he indicated he would retire the horse from racing, he later agreed with the owners to continue training the mare. He added that he has altered some gear and the way he has worked Navillus Blondie which has resulted in the mare’s condition improving. Mr Phillips also stated that he gave the mare a jump-out wearing blinkers and she pleased him with the performance.
From Gold Coast, Race 7, 17.3.12: Following the disappointing performance of Bold Glance on the above date, trainer N. Hilton today contacted stewards and advised that veterinary tests carried out on Bold Glance found the gelding to have an entrapped epiglottis. He advised that Bold Glance will be sent for an immediate spell, following which connections will consider whether to continue with the horse’s racing career. A veterinary clearance will be required for Bold Glance should the horse return to racing.
Race 1: Paul Ward’s 40th Birthday Benchmark 80 H’cap – 1830m
1st – Lohan 2nd – Haslington 3rd – Taira 4th – Banana Kick
After passing the 700m, BANANA KICK (C. Munce) shifted out and bumped TAIRA (D. Griffin).
LOHAN (G. Cooksley) was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 300m.
D. Griffin reported that TAIRA did not handle today’s heavy track conditions.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of BANANA KICK, C. Munce stated that the gelding travelled comfortably until placed under pressure near the 600m and failed to respond to his riding from that point, and, in his opinion, was disappointing. Trainer M. Palmer expressed his disappointment in the performance, and the only tangible explanation he could offer was that BANANA KICK failed to handle the step up to 1800m on a heavy track. He indicated he would have veterinary tests carried out on the horse in the subsequent days before reassessing the current racing program for BANANA KICK and would advise stewards the results of such tests. A post race veterinary examination of BANANA KICK revealed a slower than normal recovery rate.
HASLINGTON lost its off hind plate in running.

DARK MATTER (G. Cooksley) raced 3 wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to a position outside the leader near the 1400m.
For some distance approaching and passing the 600m, DELZINA (C. Munce) was held up and unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of YAMERTON (A. Mundy), which had commenced to weaken.
Apprentice P. Keane, rider of DOZING STAMPEDE, was fined $200 for failing to weigh in for 5th position.

Near the 1200m, ANGUSROY and AMPHO POWER (B. Stewart) bumped on a number of occasions.
Approaching the 400m, ZEDACHARGE (L. Rolls), which was weakening, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ANGUSROY, which shifted out when not fully clear. S. Galloway, rider of ANGUSROY, was advised to show greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Leaving the 200m, PHOEB’S FLYER (E. Wilkinson) improved on to the heels of ANGUSROY and had to alter course to the outside of that runner to improve.
DARTH (D. Green) shifted in over the concluding stages.
Trainer H. Van Hoeyen and rider D. Green were questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on DARTH, which led in today’s race which was in contrast to its normal racing pattern. Miss Van Hoeyen explained that she had instructed jockey Green to settle DARTH in a handy position with cover if possible. D. Green explained that it was his intention to obtain cover on DARTH but after being best to begin rather than being caught wide in the early stages he elected to ride forward to clear the runners to his inside which resulted in him being able to lead. Stewards accepted the explanations of both parties.
D. Green, rider of DARTH, was issued with a reprimand for raising his whip arm above shoulder height when using the whip in a forehand manner over the concluding stages.
T. Bell, rider of TOOLBAG, was fined $500 for using his whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account T. Bell’s poor record regarding breaches of his nature.
