SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Doomben 24.3.12 – Race 6: Stewards concluded an inquiry into apprentice J. Wood’s riding of SHUFFLE THE CASH rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight, in particular the reasons he did not take advantage of a run between MR SLICK and LAKE GEORGE which became available shortly after entering the home straight. Apprentice J. Wood acknowledged that there appeared to be sufficient room between the said horses to improve his position on SHUFFLE THE CASH, however informed stewards that his reluctance to proceed through that run was due to LAKE GEORGE initially shifting out which gave him the indication that the run was going to close. Apprentice Wood further conceded that whilst the run remained open to him, he had committed to altering SHUFFLE THE CASH’s line of running to the inside of LAKE GEORGE where there was sufficient room and after enjoying a clear passage for a short distance, SHUFFLE THE CASH was then held up for clear running over the concluding stages. After considering all the evidence, stewards informed apprentice Wood that in their view his riding of SHUFFLE THE CASH in the straight was poor and informed him that the option available to him to improve the position of SHUFFLE THE CASH between MR SLICK and LAKE GEORGE was the more suitable option in the circumstances. Stewards further informed apprentice Wood that whilst his riding of SHUFFLE THE CASH in the straight lacked judgment, they did not feel his actions were culpable under the rules.
Race 1: WINNING EDGE PROMOTIONAL GEAR OPEN H’CAP - 1810m
1st – Diago 2nd – Contract Caterer 3rd – Warrior Within 4th – Loves A Challenge
Approaching and passing the 1500m ENCOSTAS GIFT (P. Keane) resented being restrained and got its head up and raced fiercely.
On return to scale G. Cooksley reported that DUEL SHOW commenced to hang out shortly after leaving the barriers and whilst the horse raced truly in the straight, he was firmly of the view that DUEL SHOW is more effective on rain-affected tracks. Trainer P. Duff was advised that DUEL SHOW must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again.
Race 2: WINNING EDGE TROPHIES 1MW H’CAP - 1810m
1st – Murrumba Downs 2nd – Manicero 3rd – Mukaddamah 4th – Arctic
Near the 1500m NOBLE JESTER (P. Hammersley) got its head up when being restrained from the heels of MANICERO (R. Wiggins). NOBLE JESTER again raced ungenerously when positioned at the heels of OUTBACK GRANDE (M. Vance) for some distance passing the 1400m.
ONETIMEATBANDCAMP (M. McGuren) raced wide in the early stages.
OUTBACK GRANDE overraced in the middle stages.
LOHAN (L. Cassidy) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight when ONETIMEATBANDCAMP held a position tight to the outside of that runner, and LOHAN was inclined to lay in when rider L. Cassidy was attempting to shift out on the mare.
MURRUMBA DOWNS (C. Munce) hung in and got its head on the side when placed under pressure in the straight.
Near the 300m ARCTIC and NOBLE JESTER bumped on several occasions.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Galloway in respect of the performance of ARCTIC. Jockey Galloway stated that the horse overraced for a short distance leaving the 1400m but then relaxed and travelled comfortably for him through the middle stages. S. Galloway added that he was able to position ARCTIC into clear running shortly after entering the home straight, however the horse did not respond to his riding and in his view did not see out the 1800m trip. Jockey Galloway further added that at this stage of ARCTIC’s career it may be best to restrict the horse to races up to the mile.
A post-race veterinary examination of MONTALBERT (M. Hellyer), which finished some distance from the main body of the field, revealed the gelding to be lame in both forelegs. Trainer C. Dawson was advised that a veterinary clearance must be produced prior to the horse’s next start.
P. Hammersley reported that NOBLE JESTER raced fresh in the early part of the race and he believed that the horse’s fitness may have given out over the latter stages which could be attributed to the horse not having raced for 8 weeks.
Race 3: WINNING EDGE AWARDS & DESIGN QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Charge A Fortune 2nd – Royal Jester 3rd – Bam’s Boy 4th – Dansonate
As P. Hammersley was to be overweight, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of MISHANI PERSUADER. P. Hammersley was fined $100 under AR. 120(b).
DANSONATE (J. Wood), which had blood in its mouth, underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers and was cleared to start.
INTERJECT (S. Galloway) commenced to buck shortly after the start, dislodging its rider near the 900m. Trainer J. McLachlan was advised that INTERJECT must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to start again. S. Galloway was examined by the Club doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
MISHANI PERSUADER (M. Hellyer) and GALLINARI (A. Allen) made contact on jumping away.
BAM’S BOY (C. Munce) jumped out at the start taking UNSEEN (L. Cassidy) out on to DARLINGTON COUNTY (J. Taylor).
Near the 700m MISHANI PERSUADER had to be steadied when UNSEEN shifted in when not quite clear. L. Cassidy (UNSEEN) was advised to afford his fellow riders greater clearance when shifting ground in future. A short distance later WILL BE AMAZED (D. Holland) shifted out taking ROYAL JESTER (G. Colless) out on to GALLINARI, which had to be steadied. GALLINARI then shifted out taking MISHANI PERSUADER out, forcing DARLINGTON COUNTY wider on the track.
Leaving the 300m DANSONATE shifted out when placed under pressure, taking WILL BE AMAZED wider on the track.
DARLINGTON COUNTY raced greenly when placed under pressure in the straight.
CHARGE A FORTUNE (E. Wilkinson) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
Race 4: WINNING EDGE MERCHANDISE BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Bianca Jewel 2nd – Atlanta Falcon 3rd – Catch The Light 4th – Gunner Knox
BLOW A KISS (C. Munce) blundered at the start.
CONVICTOR (M. Vance) was tightened soon after the start between BIANCA JEWEL (R. Wiggins) and MACHINATION (P. Keane) which shifted in.
When the pace steadied near the 1000m TROMBONE ALLEY (G. Cooksley), which was overracing, had to be checked from the heels of WHISPERING GAP (L. Cassidy). GUNNER KNOX (B. Stewart), which was following, also had to be steadied and shifted out forcing BLOW A KISS wider on the track.
BIANCA JEWEL overraced in the early stages.
Shortly after entering the home straight BLOW A KISS shifted in and bumped GUNNER KNOX on two occasions.
Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce in regards to the performance of BLOW A KISS. C. Munce stated that the horse did not show its customary early speed and he therefore elected to take a position one off the fence just behind the leading division. Jockey Munce added that shortly after obtaining a position one off outside of GUNNER KNOX, the pace steadied and GUNNER KNOX shifted outwards taking him to a three wide position approaching the 800m. C. Munce further added that he was forced to travel three wide for the remainder of the event and whilst this may have had an impact on the horse’s ability to finish the race off, he was nevertheless disappointed with the horse’s effort. Trainer M. Nolan informed stewards that he was not dissatisfied with the horse’s performance on the basis that it was forced to travel wide and carry a 58kg impost.
Apprentice J. Wood informed stewards that it was his intention to bring KING OF THE KONGO wide in the straight, however he was unable to do so when CONVICTOR and NAYNAY (P. Hammersley) held a position to his outside. J. Wood stated that he was then forced to alter course to the inside in an attempt to make ground, but was held up when unable to obtain clear running when positioned on the back of the tiring TROMBONE ALLEY.
When asked to explain the performance of TROMBONE ALLEY, rider G. Cooksley explained that the gelding overraced for some distance in the early stages and did not respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the home straight. G. Cooksley added that he is of the opinion that TROMBONE ALLEY does not run out a strong 1400m. A post-race veterinary examination of TROMBONE ALLEY revealed no abnormalities.
Race 5: WINNING EDGE CORPORATE AWARDS BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 2112m
1st – Dodging Eddie 2nd – Go Cart 3rd – Break The Ice 4th – Sir Stanley
BIG GIRLS DONT CRY (G. Cooksley) jumped out at the start and bumped CLANGOR (E. Wilkinson).
BILLUM (R. Wiggins) jumped out at the start and bumped BREAK THE ICE (P. Hammersley), which in turn shifted out making contact with DAAD’S OVERTIME (D. Holland).
DODGING EDDIE (C. Munce) was slow to begin.
DAVE THE DUDE (K. Wharton) raced three wide for a major part of the event before weakening in the home straight.
Approaching the 200m DODGING EDDIE shifted in under pressure, taking BREAK THE ICE in on to DAAD’S OVERTIME.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Galloway in regards to the tactics adopted on OUR RECIDIVIST, which appeared to be in contrast to its customary racing pattern. S. Galloway informed stewards that he was instructed to ride the horse midfield as OUR RECIDIVIST has not been finishing off its races when ridden in a forward position. Trainer B. Laming will be interviewed in regards to the matter in coming days.
D. Holland reported that he was instructed to ride DAAD’S OVERTIME midfield with cover if possible but after he was obliged to race wide in the early stages he was of the opinion that he would have had to concede ground to comply with these instructions so he elected to allow the gelding to stride forward to the position outside the lead.
C. Munce reported that after being slow to begin DODGING EDDIE travelled well in the early stages and as a result settled further forward than its normal racing pattern. C. Munce added that DODGING EDDIE was much better suited today with a more genuine tempo.
L. Cassidy, the rider of MARKED, informed stewards that after letting OUR RECIDIVIST (S. Galloway) cross his running in the early stages, he was then shuffled back to a position towards the rear of the field. Jockey Cassidy added that whilst the pace of the race suited MARKED, he was forced to make a three-wide run around DAVE THE DUDE leaving the 500m and MARKED, after accelerating for a short distance, only finished the race off fairly. A post-race veterinary examination of MARKED (L. Cassidy) revealed no abnormalities.
Race 6: THE WINNING EDGE SIGNATURE QTIS 3YO FILLIES H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Crazy Mamma 2nd – Rocksan 3rd – Flying Jet 4th – Bevico Girl
JUDY’S JOY (L. Cassidy) knuckled at the start.
KAHUI (S. Galloway) jumped awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with ATLANTIS GEM (A. Allen).
GOLDSLICK (P. Keane) was tightened for room shortly after the start between ANOTHER SUPERIOR (M. McGuren) and SETTHEWORLDONFIRE (G. Cooksley), which shifted out away from CRAZY MAMMA (M. Vance).
BEVICO GIRL (A. Butler) and EMPRESS ME (R. Wiggins) were restrained from wide barriers in the early stages to gain a position closer to the rail.
Passing the 1200m EMPRESS ME (R. Wiggins) had to be eased from the heels of ROCKSAN (E. Wilkinson), which shifted in slightly.
SETTHEWORLDONFIRE, ROCKSAN (E. Wilkinson) and JUDY’S JOY overraced in the early stages.
Near the 900m STRIP SHOW (D. Holland), after being steadied to a minor degree when the pace slackened, shifted out despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in GOLDSLICK having to be severely checked when taken across the heels of ANOTHER SUPERIOR (M. McGuren). TYCOON’S HEART (B. Stewart), which was trailing, was inconvenienced as a consequence. STRIP SHOW continued to hang out and forced ANOTHER SUPERIOR to race wider. ANOTHER SUPERIOR then raced extremely wide throughout the event. B. Killion, stable representative, was advised that STRIP SHOW must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to start again.
ATLANTIS GEM raced wide throughout.
Near the 400m SETTHEWORLDONFIRE, when tiring, shifted out taking ATLANTIS GEM out on to STRIP SHOW, resulting in STRIP SHOW having to be checked between ATLANTIS GEM and ANOTHER SUPERIOR. Stewards determined that no direct action should be taken as they were of the view that the shift of SETTHEWORLDONFIRE was due to the horse tiring quite badly at that stage of the race.
Approaching the 200m ROCKSAN, when shifting out around the heels of KAHUI, made contact with the hind quarters of CRAZY MAMMA, resulting in CRAZY MAMMA becoming unbalanced.
Following the race a veterinary inspection of JUDY’S JOY revealed a small amount of blood in both nostrils. Acting under the provisions of AR. 53A(1), stewards declared JUDY’S JOY a bleeder and advised trainer B. Baldwin that the filly will now incur a mandatory 3-month bar from racing and must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward before being permitted to resume racing.
Race 7: THE WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS BRIGHT SHADOW F&M H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Cariad 2nd – Funtantes 3rd – Risk Aversion 4th – Norocos
Connections advised that FIRST LOOK (P. Hammersley), which went forward last start, would settle in a position worse than midfield, which is its normal racing pattern, if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight C. Munce, the rider of 3rd placegetter RISK AVERSION, made an application for his mount to be declared a non-runner on the basis of being denied a fair start. After taking evidence from jockey Munce and the starter, stewards advised C. Munce that under the provisions of AR. 134A, a horse which is declared first, second or third in a race shall not be declared a non-starter, and therefore dismissed his application and gave correct weight on the Judge’s placings.
PARIS BLU (M. Hellyer) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made heavy contact with RISK AVERSION.
FUNTANTES (G. Colless) and CARIAD (G. Cooksley) were slow to begin.
JUST BEEN LUCKY (D. Holland) jumped away awkwardly.
For some distance passing the 1000m AROUND THE WORLD (N. Yamada), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of PARIS BLU.
NOROCOS (B. Stewart) overraced in the early stages.
JUST BEEN LUCKY raced three wide throughout.
Race 8: WINNINGEDGE.NET.AU CLASS 6 PLATE - 1200m
1st – Theft 2nd – Oak Street 3rd – Solzhenitsyn 4th – Celtic Dancer
OAK STREET (G. Cooksley) jumped away awkwardly, shifted in abruptly and severely hampered MR ORIENT (L. Cassidy), which was also taken inwards on to the hind quarters of CELTIC DANCER (A. Allen).
Near the 1100m ROKATOKO (G. Colless), which had commenced to hang in, shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, which resulted in IMELDAMAY (A. Gibbons), SHEZAHOTSHOT (E. Wilkinson) and STAND AND CHEER (R. Mason) all being tightened for room. As a result STAND AND CHEER had to be checked. A short distance later IMELDAMAY shifted out, which resulted in DEVILS MELODY (P. Keane) and ROSAGAZE (B. Stewart) being taken wider on the track. Trainer A. Bailey will be interviewed in respect of the racing manners of ROKATOKO in following days.
ROKATOKO, DEVILS MELODY and ROSAGAZE raced wide throughout.
Passing the 800m DEVILS MELODY, when being steadied from the heels of ROKATOKO, shifted out. ROSAGAZE, which was following, attempted to improve to the inside of DEVILS MELODY where there was insufficient room, which resulted in ROSAGAZE having to be eased by its rider.
Near the 600m STAND AND CHEER, when racing fiercely, shifted out and had to be checked from the heels of SOLZHENITSYN (P. Hammersley).
OAK STREET was inclined to lay in behind the heels of THEFT (C. Munce) in the early part of the straight.
STRUMMING (M. Vance) was held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight.
ROKATOKO hung in under pressure in the home straight and proved difficult to ride.
